EARTH DAY reminds us to cherish our farmland; and protect open space, beaches & oceans. In 1906, cows meandered down from their farm to La Jolla Shores beach & were captured by a photographer who created one of @lajollahistoryโs legendary images: โCOWS ON THE BEACHโ ๐ Hereโs the HISTORY lesson this Earth Day: The cows were part of a dairy farm in the Shores, run by Jeremiah Lee and Ben Holliday with other family members, which covered about six acres of open grazing land and included sheds and barns to shelter and milk the animals. The Hollidays were Midwesterners from Indiana who first settled in La Jolla in the late 19th century, living first in the original house built by La Jolla pioneer George Heald at Exchange Place and Ivanhoe Avenue. They grazed their first dairy stock around the house and then moved the herd to Long Beach (now La Jolla Shores) where it remained for many years, providing milk and milk products to the La Jolla community. Cows from the Holliday dairy serendipitously chewing cud at the Shores beach gained prominence in 1906 when they were photographed on the sand by San Diego photographer Herbert Fitch, later becoming the most popularly reproduced image in the La Jolla Historical Societyโs archival collection of more than 30,000 photographs. The Hollidays, along with Ben Genter who had a smaller dairy herd south of Pearl Street in the early 1900s, supplied La Jollaโs small population with milk, brought door to door by a delivery truck. Photographs from the early 1900s also show that a few La Jollans kept their own cow tethered to a fence post behind the house. Here's a cheeky shot of me on the beach hanging with the cows just after the @sampoorna_yoga 300 hour graduation ceremony. I'm looking a bit soggy and sandy due to running into the sea with the amazing @jessthebestwest (we were a mess afterwards but it felt so incredible to be in the water so it was totally worth it โบ๏ธโบ๏ธ). As I mentioned before, I'm so full of inspiration and gratitude due to practicing with and learning from so many teachers and students alike over this past month. Yesterday I was reflecting upon @raphinelly 's class which was themed around freedom and what this means to us. I definitely had this moment of sheer joy and freedom yesterday whilst swimming and soaking up the final day of being in Agonda. I was feeling just so at peace and 'free'. That feeling of freedom though wasn't due to the moment of joy, but rather that I didn't feel attached to it, I was enjoying it, but not desperate to hold onto it. It's that classic thing of life being amazing...then being utterly sh*t...then being incredible again. When we are content with the fact that all of these feelings (whether good or bad) are only temporary, it helps us detach ourselves from them and in turn help us not to dwell on the bad times or keep chasing the good. I know it's definitely not an easy thing to do and we're all struggling through life at times (and so this concept by no means offers a 'solution' to those dealing with genuine mental health issues), but for myself, who tends to be very 'up and down' with my feelings, it gave me the most incredible sense of peace. As I start to digest everything that I've learned and practiced from this month, I hope I can weave it into everyday life and into my classes to help share some of these experiences. This afternoon my new jumper kept me warm on the ride along Chesil Beach, taking the young cattle from the field into the barn.
