My current dahlia situation. I decided last fall that I was willing to take the risk of leaving my dahlias in the ground. I was willing to take the risk because I don’t have a ton of them, maybe 250ish, and I also don’t have great place to store them over the winter. On top of that, I really wasn’t looking forward to the whole dig, divide, store, unpack, sort, and plant shenanigans that go along with dahlias. So I did it. I left those suckers right there in the ground and hoped for the best. I had planned to mulch them. Never got to that. I did cover them with a low tunnel, but the wind kept blowing them to pieces, so I eventually gave up on that too. So here we are in May and my current count is 102 that are up and out of the ground. Most are about 2-6” tall. They need some fertilizer and I’ll give them a top-dressing of compost, and hopefully have blooms earlier than last year. I think I lost equal amounts to the cold and to the the voles. I also lost a lot last year due to my less than ideal storage conditions. This was just another experiment, as growing always is. I’ll keep ya posted as they progress and let you know if I plan to leave the in again this year. What about you? 🌸 Dahliorna har stått på altanen sedan halv sju i morse, fram till åtta nu ikväll, och de kom in mörkgröna och fina utan något som helst tecken på att ha tagit skada av min ganska oförsiktiga avhärdning. 🌸 I morse (när jag bad min man bära ut dem åt mig innan han åkte till jobbet) fick de visserligen fiberduk över sig några timmar eftersom det bara var 5-6 grader ute. 🌸 Är det förresten inte lite fascinerande att de inte alls har likadana blad allihop, även om man (jag) ofta tänker mig det? Take off t.ex. har långsmala blad och Bishop of Dover åt det mörka hållet.
