Holy weirdness. Book review: Death Valley by Melissa Broder A journey into the desert, the comforting familiarity of a Best Western, the strain of a spouse’s chronic illness, and the anticipatory grief for a father in the ICU all come together in this strange, hilarious, and wise story which is equal parts auto-fiction, magical realism, and survival narrative. “My father the grown-up, my father the child. We are falling into the sunset. Falling into the night sky. Maybe the night sky is kind. Forgiving. We have both been forgiven a thousand times. Being human, always new things to forgive. Forgive me, father. You are already forgiven. Forgive me, daughter. There’s nothing to forgive.” The narrative voice is so strong, her musings on grief, marriage, life, and technology are insightful and vulnerable, and through it all, there was humor that literally made me spit out my drink. It’s weird, that’s for sure, but the weirdness is what makes the book work. There is a magical cactus and rabbits with attitude and rocks that act like a Greek chorus, and I am here for it. I highly recommend this book on audio, as the author narrates it, contributing to the strong narrative (almost memoir) voice. “I am going to die out here. I might. I could. Die. Recently spent a week with @ancientwisdomsurvival in the southeastern Arizona high desert. We learned how survive in this environment. How to build quick shelters and stay warm in them with grass mats and grass blankets. Spring foraging and medicinal plants and how to obtain the tools to collect the plants responsibly from the land. Friction fire and what the resources were in that area. Blanket packs. Hygiene without TP or showers. Knapping and knots. Learned how to shoot primitive bows and how to move quietly through the land. Navigation by day or by night was discussed. Night time illumination, pecked stone oil lamps and torches, finding water…the 5C’s and the 5W’s of survival were covered in this course. We shared knowledge, meals, and a campfire everyday. If you ever get a chance to take a survival style course, I’d highly recommend it. Gives a sense of confidence anytime you even go out for a hike. Survival Fishing Spear. I wanted to put the new-to-me Wilderness Explorer knife thru the paces while camping out. Figured this would be a good project for it. Sawing, debarking, light chopping, carving, battoning. This old school survival tool handled it all with ease (I went on to make some friction fire hearths and did much the same again). Fun nostalgic knife, fun nostalgic project. Rambo vibes for days (yeah I grew up watching First Blood WAY too many times). Do something fun, be creative, and go outside! I took a multi-day desert survival course with @ancientwisdomsurvival and David Holladay, on a beautiful location in SE Arizona. There was a lot of skills sharing, but the highlight for me was the over-day/night solo in the desert mountains of the Coronado National Forest, at 5,000 ft elevation. We were allowed to bring as much or as little as we wanted. The forecast was for high 30’s and 40mph gusts, so I played it safe with a gourd canteen, hand drill set, piece of hemp, shemagh, dew rag, and the clothes I had on. No jacket, blanket, knife, phone, wallet, tarp, lighter..nothing. I had all the confidence in the World that my hand drill set was perfect. After all, I had just got my first ever hand drill ember(I know..I’m a slacker) the night before. My hands were sore, so I didn’t practice any more. Upon selecting a site, I built a short wind block. I paved the upper deck with 2-6” thick, flat vesicular basalt rocks and some filler rocks in between. This was my rock bed. If you’ve ever slept on the ground, you know the ground can conduct all your body heat. So, I flipped the script. Since it conducts 60X more than the air draws from your body, I turned that 60X into an ultra-efficient heat source for my rock shelter. Dubbed Bedrock (rock bed), it was a few feet from Ash Creek(just a trickle of a flow). I never had to go more than 50 feet for all my resources(wood, rocks, grass, water). After some technical difficulties with the sotal hearth board splitting a few times, I finally got an ember and started a small, dispersed fire over the entire rock bed with less than 1” sticks, as to not get too hot. I kept these mainly to the perimeter of my rock bed and up the back wall. After about 3 hours of moving coals and sticks around to (hopefully) evenly heat the surrounding ground and rocks, I swept the remaining coals into the lower deck. I then used my shemagh to carry sand/gravel, to level out the bumps on the bed. I topped that with a bit of duff(leaf litter), to see if I saw any signs of ignition. Out of posting space. Best pack for desert wandering? I guess that’s truly subjective, but I’ve been a huge fan of the @mountainsmith Day Lumbar Pack for years. It’s gotten loads of dirt miles on it and functions really well in a desert environment. Adding Mountainsmith’s Strapettes helps you load out the lumbar pack enough that you can go a little heavy with it, and this comes in handy when you’re bringing lots of water with you on a long desert hike. The pack sits off your back, thus helping regulate body heat while moving under the desert sun, and allowing what breeze is around on continue to hit and cool your core. It’s rugged and carries my desert backcountry necessities well, and I even added a @tuffpossumgear belt pouch to the left side hip belt. This increase that capacity by a little more and made often used items more accessible. The pack sits low and allows for ducking in and around mesquite basques and avoiding the pesky cat claw bushes one runs into while wandering the desert wilds. All in all, after many years, it’s become my desert go-to bag. I’ve overnighted with it many a times, and scouted out more than a few new areas while carrying the Day Lumbar along. I am not going to lie, I personally have come to resent books that compare Ramadan/Eid to Christmas holidays. BUT this story is different; it is so cleverly told. No comparison is ever made. It’s about family love and respect. Rayan’s voice and worries come through the story so relatable for the young character. In Muslim stories, usually Muslims are the ones struggling to fit into the greater society. Here, the Christian grandpa, fitting into a Muslim setting, is a refreshing perspective for Muslim readers, as well as others. The multifaith family dynamic is really portrayed in a heartwarming way. Beautiful story in time for Ramadan. I am not going to lie, I personally have come to resent books that compare Ramadan/Eid to Christmas holidays. BUT this story is different; it is so cleverly told. No comparison is ever made. It's about family love and respect. Rayan's voice and worries come through the story so relatable for the young character. In Muslim stories, usually Muslims are the ones struggling to fit into the greater society. Here, the Christian grandpa, fitting into a Muslim setting, is a refreshing perspective for Muslim readers, as well as others. The multifaith family dynamic is really portrayed in a heartwarming way. Each child narrates beautiful moments from their lives in their home towns, followed by the reality of the occupation and hownit affects them. The book ends with a messge of hope and resilience and a hadith of the prophet Muhammed a.s. about masjid al Aqsa. Although the characters are fictional, each one provides a glipse of the reality of Palestinian children in their respective areas in Palestine. I absolutely love the fact that Islam is intertwined in this book so thoughtfully. Some young kids might find some of the scenes to be a little uncomfortable, which is why I recommend that adults need to read this book first and decide if their child's sensitivities are able to digest the content. I have openly talked to my kids about Palestine, Gaza, and the occupation, so nothing surprised them in this book. Despite that, it concludes in a hopeful and positive light. Thus, I believe the approach and the execution of this book was done so thoughtfully. Firstly, the book put all the salah: Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib and Isha. Secondly, it’s educational for Muslim kids. Thirdly, the book mentioned some cities. Finally, it had this rhyme; 'Come to prayer. Come to salah. Come to success. Come to falah." This book paired with a how-to-pray book is the perfect combination for little ones. The simple text written in flowing rhymes along with the stunning illustrarions makes this book the perfect read for the current political climate. What a privilege it was to work with the Lamea Association delivering a Desert Survival Team building event centred around the values of effective team work, communication, and leadership @peakunity We were honoured to have H.E. Rawan Tawfiqi, the Minister of Youth join us, and partake in many of the activities championing the development of youth in Bahrain and leading from the front. The Lamea Association is an excellent initiative driving the development of high-achieving youth, offering them a platform to further enrich their experiences, capabilities, behaviours and skills. They are supported by a fantastic training team with a wealth of knowledge and experience, and to say the least, it was amazing for Peak Unity and our team to contribute in a small way to their development. We covered: - A desert hike - Shelter building with minimal resources - Solar Water Stils - Bow and Arrows - Fire Lighting These activities were all reflected upon with effective debriefing to instil discussion around leadership and team work to drive home the power of these qualities and application to the workforce.
On the first day of arriving at the Sahara Desert, I fell ill—fever, headache, sore throat, runny nose, and chills. In the last two days, the dryness and UV rays caused my eyes to constantly tear up, making it painful to open them. Despite these conditions, I persevered and completed some necessary tasks. As someone who grew up in the forest, I evidently struggled to adapt to the climate and desolation of the desert. Yet, even now, I hold deep admiration for the residents who have lived there for generations.
