During the spring work party we got a few more flat tent sites set up for these nice bell tents we have planned for some of the students in upcoming workshops. โ โ We regularly collect feedback at the end of every class and one thing we were finding was that there were often students who regretted not taking advantage of the camping opportunity. Some of the reasons they cited were not having experience or gear, not knowing what to expect or what else they'd need to bring, and so forth. โ โ As a result of this feedback Natalie decided to offer an option where carpentry students at the paint for campus could choose to have at tent set up for them for a flat per-class fee, and we made a detail video providing more footage of the campus facilities and options for lodging. โ โ We hoped this might help prospective students to see and understand more about what the camping experience would be like for them, and feel more confident they'd know what to bring (or not need to bring) as they make decisions planning their trip. โ โ That video, "Planning Your Trip," is available on our youtube channel and is on our website (scroll down and click this image at our bio-link to check it out):โ โ https://www.wildabundance.net/planning-your-trip/โ โ Since making this video added several more of these nice bell tents, and in January a handful of folks did in fact book a tent to stay in during their carpentry or tiny house workshop this year, so we're excited to be opening up the camping opportunity to people who may have otherwise booked a hotel!โ โ Another neat project during the work party was putting up some pretty little string lights over a path in the woods so there's a little more ease and atmosphere walking between the campsites and the shower at night.

Exploring the wilderness and learning survival skills has been very empowering experience for me! From making fire with bow drilling to spotting tasty plants, every lesson brings me closer to being self-sufficient. Just finished level two training near the muddy Dallas, Texas, and now Iโm gearing up for the next challenge in Oklahoma this January. My goals? Master woodworking, improve my bow drilling, convince myself that I love fasting, and even give up coffee! Forest Keepers (our bi-weekly 10-14 y/o program), spent our time morning chopping wood and collecting tinder to start the fire. Others were chopping Willow twigs and wood to size to fit in a small paint can with a hole in the lid. Eventually the fire was started by Ferro rod and char cloth, then the can was placed in the centre. As the willow inside the can heated, it emitted flammable gases which rushed out of the hole in top with a great roaring sound like a jet engine! Inside the can, the willow was being rendered to pure charcoal... At lunch we told a story; a great tale! One fortunate event followed by an unfortunate event around and round the circle, a wide-ranging and crazy story...toads, robots, aliens, Taylor Swift, Elon Musk and much conflict. And don't forget the secret hidden water bear empire! Once the can and charcoal were cool enough, we opened the can. What a sound charcoal makes when dropped on a wooden bench: a gentle tinkling kind of like glass โจ We tried our new charcoal and each Keeper drew a scene from the story we created at lunch and set them in order like a cartoon story board. S has always been into Survival stuff. So she is excited to start diving into learning and mastering survival skills! Come summertime she will be learning to build a house in the woods. In her first lesson in her "Catch A Crayfish, Count the Stars" young adventurers survival skills book, she had to create an exploration kit. This kit needed to include: *Picture of family with parent contact info *waterbottle *snacks *extra baggies or containers *small net *rope (550 paracord) *flashlight *field guides *binoculars *notebook & pen *magnifying glass *multi-tool *rain jacket or poncho *medical supplies *and depending on the season and what you're doing- warm hoodie, hate, emergency blanket, whistle, bug spray, sunglasses, sunscreen, trail maps, inner tube for bikes, etc. Her next lesson is learning two different ways to make a compass!
