Through the words of women like Lydia Spencer and the documented accounts of families, such as Sarah Williams and her husband and children who journeyed with the Buffalo Soldiers, we are reminded of the human side of our fort's story. As the fort evolved into a hospital, it welcomed families who settled in the surrounding areas and contributed to its success. Mothers and fathers alike worked tirelessly to support different aspects of the fort. It was their dedication and hard work that made our fort a pioneer in treating Tuberculosis. Greetings from Lincoln, Have you ever heard of Maria Juana Chavez? This extraordinary woman was born in Belen, Valencia, New Mexico in 1842 and was one of seven siblings. But it's not just her large family that makes her fascinating. At the young age of 12, she married Saturnino Baca, also known as the "Father of Lincoln County". Together, they had 12 children and were blessed with a marriage that lasted over 50 years, according to census records. Sadly, not much else is known about Juana's life, besides her passing sometime between 1910 and 1920. But here's where it gets interesting - did you know that the Baca's were instrumental in the construction of La Iglesia of San Juan Bautista, the largest church in Lincoln? In fact, they even donated the church's iconic bell. And here's a fun fact - it's named Juana Maria after Mrs. Baca herself! Now that's a legacy that deserves to be remembered. Greetings from Fort Stanton, Nestled just outside the charming town of Lincoln and enveloped by the majestic Lincoln National Forest lies a 240-acre site steeped in rich history. This site has played significant roles in both the Indian Wars and the Civil War, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire generations. As we celebrate the 169th anniversary of its establishment, let us honor the birthdate of Fort Stanton with admiration and gratitude. In May of 1855, this fort was built and has withstood the test of time. Its remarkable preservation is a testament to the strong stones from a nearby quarry that were used, rather than the typical adobe, making it one of the most well-preserved forts in all of New Mexico. Beyond its military significance, Fort Stanton also served as a pioneering research hospital for Tuberculosis, providing vital treatment to patients who consumed a staggering 4,000 calories a day. And with the fort's presence came an economic boom in the local communities, creating job opportunities and sustenance for many. Under the stewardship of New Mexico Historic Sites since 2007, Fort Stanton continues to thrive. Through numerous stabilization and interpretive projects, hundreds of thousands of people have been educated on its rich history. Even today, with the support of our state government, we are diligently maintaining the beauty and integrity of the Nurses Quarters, New Hospital, and Laundresses Quarters.
