Period home renovation & restorations….CONTINGENCIES FOR THE UNKNOWNS! Our All Saints Grade 2 project has been moving along at pace, we are mainly concentrating on the exterior elements to date whilst the weather has been favourable! However, we have recently stripped out the loft bedroom. This should have been a quick, straightforward piece of work, simply bringing the loft space up to date with current regs. How wrong we were!! The existing roof has been repaired & botched over the years and simply covered up! Various options were put on the table to save the existing structure however this was quickly ruled out due to the extent of the issues found. We have engaged a local surveyor/ Architect who will be submitting plans & designs for the new roof replacement to the listed buildings department for approval. 150 Bishopsgate is based in London’s Square mile, in a conservation area with some of the finest examples of Victorian architecture on display, including an original Victorian shopfront. This had to be preserved and sensitively renovated alongside new sympathetic replacement shopfronts, as well as replacement windows and doors for Devonshire House that had to be carefully managed to maintain their historic integrity. Old timber framed buildings dating to 16th century and earlier are very interesting to look at because you often find original features tucked away. Here we have two beams, one above a ground floor window and one above a first floor window, both of which have long grooves cut into them - these were previously for timber sliding shutters. The diamond slots are where vertical diamond mullions were inserted into to form an unglazed window. The shutters and mullions have since been lost which is usually the case with these buildings, and later windows inserted. The last photo shows a diamond mullion window how it would been originally, minus shutters. This blog was from almost a year ago but I’m too close to the area regularly again. https://clanwitch.com/2023/05/08/city-kill-house/ I wandered around this spot with the kids, and we talked about the slaughterhouse and what happens behind the gates, the high walls, and the windowless rooms. My gut pangs in twisted nausea weekly as I once again pass beneath this place. It can’t be avoided. The train is a bullet, and it keeps being fired. I think of how many animals for which Bellgrove Station was their last stop. My blood runs cold with pain and rage. Considering their fear and terror. I always think of it being exactly like those souls of the Nazi camps. I think of Auschwitz, and what we do to these animals is no different in the end—persecuted because they are of another species. Still, there’s a beating heart, love, hate, fear, life, soul. Those we choose to kill, butcher, and eat are no different to the dogs we share our beds with. This place operated as a meat market, cattle market and abattoir between 1911 and 2001… so much death. I might have to get in behind those gates one day soon for a few photos of the old cattle ramp up from that final stop for so many poor souls. Lovely spring day to visit High Bradfield. The impressive Grade 1 listed 15th century church of St Nicholas dominates the village: it is believed there has been a Christian settlement here since the 9th century: there is a Saxon cross in the church. The original Norman church is believed to have been built in 1109. The script of the 17th century tombstone is still perfectly legible. There are often sheep grazing in the graveyard: there can’t be many more beautiful & peaceful places to be laid to rest. The lovely Grade 2 listed cottages lead to the church. 2 of them used to be a workhouse. Just need a lick of paint-one was so bad that the joiner said it would have been easier/quicker to replace with new-if only! 😖 Front brickwork is settling after being repointed and cleaned. When l look back at the before and afters l can appreciate how much we’ve achieved. - May l also take a moment to say that l think there needs to be an overall review of consent and planning for listed buildings. What we’ve had to go through like repairing timber work that was 70% rotten is beyond me not to mention that we’re left with environmentally inefficient windows makes me mad. No wonder most are left to rot! Celebrating Maker Memories! Starting in 2016, the Maker Memories project was an ambitious volunteer-led project supported by Plymouth Museum, now @theboxplymouth that collected an oral, photographic and filmic archive of the Maker site. A team of volunteers gathered stories from diverse groups - from older people who remembered camping at Maker as children, right through to the most recent artists and musicians who’ve performed and created work here. These are just a few of the thousands of photographs that were donated to the project, which went on to form exhibitions at The Box and in libraries throughout the area. The project won Best Community Archive and the Community Engagement Award from the Archive and Heritage Group in 2019 (picture 10). We wrote to request that Trelaske Lodge, Lewannick in Cornwall be listed, and we are delighted that Historic England has now done so. The former lodge is now a Grade II-listed building. The building is a charming Gothic Revival design built with local materials, nestling comfortably in the landscape. It was part of the improvements on the Trelaske estate in the Nineteenth Century and is the only part of that estate that now survives. This house was previously two separate buildings. The right side portion was built in at least early 1500 or possibly earlier. The left side portion was a separate building built later, at some point in the 16th or 17th century. The buildings were converted into one single house in the early 20th century. One feature here is a passageway to the left side of the house. Previously a cart entrance, it was made smaller and turned into a passageway around the same time the buildings were converted. The last few photos are of the roof space which show the original crown post roof and wattle and daub infill panels. HB&P object to Grade II King's Head Inn's full demolition in Pulham St Mary, South Norfolk. This is the owner’s 3rd attempt to get rid of the pub to make way for housing since it closed in 2007. I got this floor laid and I’m now back home for a well earned rest. It was an epic undertaking for a not huge room. The boards were fairly mixed in width so each one had to be ripped to form a straight edge, then ripped into batches of common widths for laying end to end. I tried not to remove more than 20-30mm total off each board to keep those lovely widths. They are then laid in random order to mix up where the really wide ones go. I’ll be back next month to carry on with the clean and wax, and to fit a low skirting I’ll be making to match the panelling profile and cover the expansion gaps. The client has asked for some restoration to the Elizabethan panelling.
