This morning we climbed Big Mama Dune - she stands tall at over 200 meters, (roughly = to a 60-story building). From the top we had another wonderful view of Sossusvlei itself at the base of the dune, all the way across to Big Daddy and Dead Vlei, and on to the towering Namib-Naukluft mountains, dwarfing even the highest dunes. Vlei is Afrikaans for ‘marsh’, while ‘sossus’ is Nama for ‘no return’ or ‘dead end’. At Sossusvlei, the dunes meet, preventing the Tsauchab River from flowing any further, hence its name meaning “dead-end marsh”. The word marsh as we commonly regard it though, is perhaps a little misleading in this instance: Sossusvlei itself (and indeed Dead Vlei too) is actually a clay pan covered in a crust of salt-rich sand. While the pan has been shaped over time by the Tsauchab river, the actual flooding of the pan is a relatively rare event, and sometimes several years pass between one flood and the next. The river is dry most of the year, and even when it is not, it carries relatively little water to the vlei. The dunes here have developed over many millions of years: the sand was deposited into the Atlantic Ocean from the Orange (Gariep) River. The Benguela current then carried this sand northwards, to be deposited back onto the land by the ocean’s surf. From here the wind carried the red sand inland over time, to form the dunes. They get their vibrant color from their high concentration of iron exposed to the process of oxidation over many years: the older the dunes, the more intense their reddish colour. They are partially covered grass, bushes, and a few trees. In the middle of the Namib Desert, the oldest desert worldwide, lies the Namib Naukluft Park covering an area of nearly 50,000 km² . Only a small part of the park is accessible for visitors: the Naukluft Mountains, the Sossusvlei as well as some parts of the Kuiseb River. We are currently staying near the Sossuvlei. This morning we climbed ‘Big Daddy’ (also called the ‘Crazy Dune’) which at 325m/1066ft, is assumed to be the highest sand dune worldwide. It bloody well felt like it and I’m sure our thighs will attest to this in a couple of days! Once we had slogged to the top ridge line, we had the joy of a slow jog straight down to Dead Vlei. Not sure we will ever be free of the red sand! Dead Vlei has long been cut off from the Tsauchab River by the sand dunes, and as a result is home to a small forest of dead camelthorn trees, conserved by the extremely dry climate which prevents them from decay. Sesriem Canyon A short hike this morning down the 3km long, 30m deep, well hidden Sesriem Canyon. About 15 to 18 million years ago, layers of sand and gravel were deposited when the Namib was wetter. The Tsauchab River has shaped this stunning natural feature over millions of years and is one of only a handful of spots in the area that hold water throughout the year. The area’s geological history is clearly visible in the sedimentary rock layers of the canyon walls. The name derives from the Afrikaans term for six belts. tastes delicious. 🐿️🤤🐾 When you had nearly given up hope and finally find what you’re searching for. I finally got lucky to see my dear squirrel friends on the second last day of our stay at the wonderful Mountain Zebra NP. 🙏 I stayed with them for more than two hours and so much enjoyed extensively watching them running around, sniffing, digging in the sandy soil, sneaking, curiously peeking around, cuddling and of course snacking away. It felt as if the little squirrel friends were in a lush garden full of tasty treats. OK so 2 punctures in two days - and the one today was so bad, we had to take a tyre off and replace it. So far, Renegade brand tyres are not up to the task. We realise we are on challenging surfaces but these tyres are thin inside. Even the thick parts are hollow, not solid 🤔 Shopping for a replacement brand at this stage. On the plus side, shortly after we pulled over, a lovely couple - who are both Rangers at Namib Rand Nature Reserve - stopped to help. Weirdly they were en route with their little baby to the lovely place we stayed at with all the Lithops, for a long birding weekend. How lucky for us! Thank you Universe!!! Thank you Rangers! We are now at the most stunning and remote campsite. The Namib Desert Horses - the only feral herd of horses in Africa. Southern Africa has no native horse population, and wild Namib horses are believed to be the descendants of those bred for racing and mine work in the area, as well as of the 1700 Union cavalry horses who scattered after intense bombing of their base by the Germans in 1915. 🧡 The herd has remained in the greater area ever since but sadly the numbers have dwindled dramatically in recent years, with the current herd size thought to be below 100. Their harsh environmental living conditions are the main driver of mortality, along with them being a major food source for the spotted hyena! 🧡 They have an average home range of 34 km2 (13 sq miles ) and cover considerable distances, - 15 to 20 kilometres (9 to 12 mi) - in search of food, water and shelter. Due to the scarcity of water, they sometimes go without water for as long as 30 hours in summer and have been known to go close to 72 hours without water during the winter, significantly longer than most horses, even other feral herds. 🧡 We were fortunate to see a few of them on this windy, sandy afternoon. 🧡 Earlier in the day on our hike, we viewed a geoglyph/earth drawing of a Namib Desert Horse galloping towards a crossroads - symbolic of this population’s uncertain future. It was created in recent years by local artists Annie Snyman and her brother PS James van Rensburg using old fence posts from local farms laid out on the earth for the initial outline.
