Horseshoe aka Rocky Brook Mountain, North Maine Woods, Aroostook County. The 1.5 mile hike felt like a 10 miler! Rough drive to trailhead, as should be expected. First mile on an alder-encroaching woods road easy peasy for hikers used to hiking the back 40. The next half mile? An adventure in finding flagging tape but don’t expect too much (some of it is on the ground around the old telephone cable). So lightly travelled that moss grows on the trail and I wanted to lay down for a nap. Some of the prettiest forest I have seen in Aroostook County on the steep summit cone. A second set of eyes and the 12th edition Maine Mountain Guide directions are once again a must here. When a tree is growing up through the fire tower, gotta wonder when it last had a safety inspection. Spoiler alert: I did not climb the tower at Round Mountain. While I huffed and puffed my way up a trail corridor better defined and better flagged than Horseshoe (but still rougher than anything outside the bush), NMW rangers descended on my hiking partner who sat this one out. I read that we were supposed to park nowhere near the lodge, so we parked down the street. I must have triggered a security camera while looking for the “spring cover” (not as fancy as it sounds, just a piece of sheet metal). Spruce Grouse. When within nature, I make deliberate efforts to attune myself to my surroundings and be as curious and conscious observer as I can manage. At no time and place is this more true than when I’m afield in the North Woods. The practice has provided a multitude of learning opportunities that I value greatly. Although I’ve encountered Spruce Grouse on a number of occasions, I can’t help but be awestruck by their gentle ways and ornate appearance. Recently, while traveling a woods road near the St. John, I spotted a male displaying out in the open beside the forest. His performance was slow and seemingly solitary. As I watched from a distance, the bird vocalized in a way I’d never observed in the species before. With tail fanned and breast feathers erect, the bird tilted his head upward and issued a single, high, thin whistled note. He did this 3 times while striding the roadside before noisily fluttering up into a tree not far from where I stood. Whether the purpose of this vocal activity was to convey alarm, a component of this particular bird’s display, or some other function alludes me still. This was the first of many trips that will ensue over the next two years under the expansion of our nightjar studies. Game Care - I want to take a moment to discuss the importance of this topic. Over the years we have encountered pretty much every bit of weather that can be thrown at a hunt, from hurricane winds to 95 degree heat. Our location means we are a long ways from any modern grid powered amenities. We have adapted to this style of hunting to provide the best experience for our clients and guides. Two years ago, after a tremendous amount of discussion we decided to team up with Deer Processing Westbrook. He purchased a mobile walk-in cooler and agreed to locate to our camp. This has been a huge success, allowing our clients to store all of their meat in his cooler and receive high quality processing. I know of only one other remote outfitter who is doing this. Most clients don’t realize if you book a remote hunt, your butcher may be 50-100 miles away, and they may not even be open by the time you reach them depending on what time of day you shoot the moose. In addition to the walk in cooler we have also invested in the highest quality coolers and chest freezer to ensure the food served in camp is always safe. The lottery is 5 days away. I really enjoy hand loading rifle cartridges that I hunt with for many reasons. First and foremost I feel that I owe it to the game I pursue to be 100% confident in my shooting and that my well placed bullet will do the job quickly. I now shoot exclusively all copper Barnes bullets. My experience has been that they preform flawlessly when delivered accurately. And unlike bullets containing lead, the copper bullets don’t pose a residue threat to me at my dinner table or any of the critters eating gut piles left in the woods. Studies have shown that Eagles in particular are very susceptible to even trace amounts of lead that they ingest while feeding on moose and deer carcasses. (It always amazes me how quickly Eagles appear on moose gut piles in the NMW.) Spring temperatures mirror the fall and the lack of bugs make this the perfect time of year for load development. A few weeks back I had the pleasure to spend some time with the good folks at Upland Gun Company. Full disclosure would have it that I had already begun the conversation with them regarding my order of a customized Venus. The decision had already been made and I looked forward to the opportunity to get my hands on several of their offerings to finalize the details of my order. While it’s opposite for most, winter is my down time. I work a seasonal position that runs May-November, am a dedicated Bear hunter that devotes 3 months to baiting, hunting and trapping, and then falling into every other hunting season after that.. when winter comes I make my own schedule, I take more slow mornings, I spend days in the same pajamas and I fish hard. The winters are changing, and this one wasn’t the greatest, but man am I happy about the outcome I’ve seen. I’ve fished 2 new areas this season, and one of them resulted in my all time biggest fish.
