The Giant Plumose Anemone or White Plumed Anemone can be found on the west coast of Canada and the United States. They are typically 50 cm (20 inches) in height but can grow close to one meter (39 inches). They are carnivores capturing zooplankton and other food particles on its tentacles and pushes them into their mouth in the center of their oral disc. They have very few predators although smaller species can be eaten by sea stars or some nudibranchs. Who doesn't love an excuse to look at penguin pics? April 25 is set aside as World Penguin day. Scientists at McMurdo Station in Antarctica observed that this was the time Adelie Penguins would begin their migration north to warmer waters in order to be able to more easily feed as winter began in Antarctica. It has grown to celebrate all penguins with a goal to raise awareness and appreciate for these adorable animals. Penguins spend the majority of their lives in the sea and are reliant on healthy oceans for survival. Many penguin species live in Antarctica where warming waters and loss of ice impact their hatching environment and availability of food. Spent a few hours exploring locally this weekend and Tommy Thompson park rarely disappoints. Bit of a dull morning however spent some time with this beaver and its mate while there were feeding shortly after sunrise. Spring was in the air on this dive! Varieties of Sea Cucumbers can be found in almost all marine environments and so aren't that exciting for divers to see. However, we happened to be diving on the exact day that there was a mass spawning event. Every where I looked there were Sea Cucumbers lifted up off the sea bed where as normally they are flat and rarely moving. If you look slightly to the right and back of this one, you can see a white substance floating behind the raised part of its body. Sea Cucumber eggs are fertilized externally when the come into contact with sperm that males have released. Timing is everything and am very happy to have captured this image. My recent trip to BC was my first time diving with my new mirrorless UW camera set up and first time diving in BC waters. With thanks to the Aquatica Ditigal team the housing performed perfectly although I admit to still being in full learner mode when it comes to the switch from my trusty DSLR to mirrorless. Functionality aside, the performance capabilities of the R5 are dramatically different from my 5D MK 1V that its almost like starting all over again. Its only fitting then that the first image I am sharing from this trip is a Red Irish Lord. Part of the description of this fish in my reference book notes that they are quite sedentary and a favorite for photographers. I can attest to this one waiting patiently while I fussed with my settings to capture this image. More images from this trip to come! The deep blue sea, water (which covers about 70% of our planet’s total surface), is one of nature’s most beautiful gift to humanity. It is however one of the most polluted environments on our beautiful blue planet. Sharing a couple new images for World Dolphin Day. These first two speak to their naturally curious and what we see as playful behaviour. A group of 4 dophins came through our dive group at around 95 feet and stayed with us for some time. They made all the decisions as to how close to come to the divers and gave us a great show as they spun and did pirouettes in between us for at least 5 minutes. There was a very young dolphin in the group and I also have to wonder if the choice to engage with divers was part of the young dolphin's education. Whatever the reason, it was a very special experience and happy to have captured a few images. If you look closely in the second image, you can see the shadow of a manta ray up closer to the surface. The Socorro Islands in the Revillagigedo Archipelago form North America's largest marine park protecting habitat for a wide range of sharks, rays, whales and other marine species. Check out ecoprintkohtao for workshops The Drupella snail, a prevalent issue in certain bays around the island, prompts us to develop new research projects for outbreak management. After a few false starts, design changes and updates - I'm excited to announce my e-shop is finally up and running. Technically we did a soft launch a couple weeks ago and for anyone who has launched a website will appreciate, I wanted to make a few more adjustments before formally launching. One thing I have learned over this journey is its easy to fall prey to letting perfect be the enemy of the good. The shop is currently displaying framed prints with white mats and black frames. My images are also available printed on canvas, acrylic and metal with framed and unframed options for each. You can also buy prints unframed or in envelope mats ready for you to frame. If you are interested in other formats please contact me for a quote. This also means I can now turn my mind to creating more images and writing stories which is the fun part. Here's another conservation story to round out the week. The Revillagigedo National Park, home to the Soccorro Islands is Mexico's largest "no take" marine area. The Park is home to 389 fish species, a highly diverse population of pelagic fish with 28 different shark species having been identified. It is also an important breeding site for silvertip, whitetip reef and Galapagos sharks. For divers, it is also famous for the aggregations of Oceanic Manta Rays that can be found feeding and being cleaned. The underwater world is a fascinating realm with diverse and captivating marine life. From the graceful movements of nudibranch to the vibrant colors of tropical fish and coral reefs, each living creature under the sea plays a vital role in maintaining the balance of our planet’s ecosystems. Observing and appreciating these underwater creatures can inspire a deeper connection to our natural world and a desire to protect and preserve it for future generations 🪸🪻🐌 It’s so important to respect and protect these living habitants by maintaining safe distance and avoiding any direct contact 🙏🏼 .
Continuing this week's wildlife theme, today's post features wildlife from Galapagos where 97 % of land area is designated as protected as a national park. The Galapagos islands are made up of 127 islands, islets and rocks which were declared as a national park in 1959. The Galapagos Marine protected area is one of the largest and most divers marine protected areas in the world. Spanning 133,000 square KMs or 51,000 square miles, it is home to over 3,000 species of marine life including whales, sharks, rays, penguins, seals and sealions, sea birds and marine iguanas. ⚓️ Are you an Advanced diver who wants to experience one of the few Ship Wrecks in Sri Lanka? We have two wreck sites regularly visited from our dive centre in the season, so come and join us on a trip! ℹ️🌊 For experienced divers, the Rangoon Ship wreck offers an exciting and rewarding dive. With its depth of 25-32 meters and occasional strong currents, it’s not suitable for beginners. However, for those who are up for the challenge, the rewards are plenty. The wreck is home to a wide variety of marine life, including barracudas, porcupine fish, sting ray, lionfish, and even the occasional whale shark 🐋🤩. & when the visibility is also excellent, it allows you to fully appreciate the beauty of the wreck and its inhabitants. Aside from the marine life, the Rangoon wreck also has a significant historical value. SS Rangoon is a 60M long 1800 Ton heavy sailing/steamer built by Samuda Bros of London in 1863, sunk right in front of the Galle harbor mouth in 1871. She offers a glimpse into the past and adds an educational aspect to the dive. .

One of the other images featured this week at the Arts Market is this adorable baby Humpback whale. Humpback whales migrate annually up to 25,000 kilometres (16,000 miles) moving from where they feed in polar waters to warmer waters closer to the equator to breed and give birth. Humpback whales will rely on their fat stores for months once they leave their feeding grounds. Every year from January to March female humpback whales travel to the Silverbank which is part of the Sanctuary for Marine Mammals of the Dominican Republic, to give birth, rest and nurse their newborns. Baby humpback whales need time to build the muscle strength they need to make the journey back up north. This image is a baby humpback who came in for a quick look at the surface while mom was resting roughly 30 feet below us.
