I'm home from Penguicon. I got a gay star sticker (I mean it could just be a rainbow but if I remember correctly there were other flavors of queer stars), something for my sister (not pictured because it's a surprise), and a necklace. More on that below and in slide 3. I'm not much of a necklace person yet I've also wanted one for some time. I was really drawn to this because of the pattern and the material. This stuff is known as Detroit agate, motor agate, or simply Fordite. Back in the 20th century when they sprayed liquid paint onto car bodies in Detroit, excess paint would build up on the walls and machinery of the factory and every now and then they'd chip a bunch of it off. It turns out this built-up paint is super hard and exhibits strata kind of like some rock formations, so it's good for cutting and shaping into pieces like the one I bought. The painting process is different now so no more Detroit agate is being produced, which means prices will only go up as supply dwindles. I didn't get this for a price I would call cheap, but it was within my means and some smaller pieces were half the cost, plus the seller kindly discounted it by $10 for me. The seller didn't know which factory this piece came from but said it was probably the one where they painted big vans because of where the paint has been seen. I really like this material as a blend of natural and artificial- the paint is obviously very artificial and so is the spraying process and the existence of the factory etc. But the buildup of it, the layering, the fact it's so hard, and its beauty are all accidental- so, to me, basically natural traits. Plus of course it looks and feels like a mineral.
