Leviathan Wakes by James S.A. Corey I’m probably a bit late to the party, but I loved this book. I hadn’t seen the TV show, so went in with no expectations and was blown away, and now feel justified about buying these beautiful anniversary editions on a whim. We follow 2 main characters - a weary detective solving a missing person case, and a young space captain trying to do his best to keep himself and his crew alive. The plot is action packed - so much happens in just this first book, so I’m excited to see where the rest of the series goes. I sometimes struggle with space operas and keeping track of all the different locations / people, but this was really easy to follow. The one thing that stopped it from being a full 5 stars was I felt the characters were a tiny bit cliche / predictable, but I loved them regardless. Caliban's War by James S.A. Corey (book review) Rating- 5 out of 5 Magnificent is the only word I can use to describe this book. I've been a fan of "The Expanse" TV series since it first released but am only reading the books now. "Leviathan Wakes" was good "Caliban's War" was better in every way imaginable. The Rocinante crew return with James Holden as their captain dealing with the fallout of the previous book. The story follows four main characters (Holden, Avasarala, Bobbie and Prax) as they deal with politics (on a galactic scale), war and a dad seeking his missing daughter. Each character's story is threaded to the climatic space battle that is breathtaking in set and execution. I love Sci-fi, so this story is the type of story I love; big and, at times, complex. The complexity never gives way to confusing chaos. The story always stays straightforward without too many unnecessary rabbit holes. This fact is made even more incredible when you consider it is two people telling this story. I'll be taking a brief break but will get into book 3 soon. If the rest of the series is close to this book, then it will be an accomplishment. Favourite Holden quote- "I'm sorry. No tea drinkers on the crew. Lots of coffee, though, if you'd like a cup." (Pg461) Goodreads Synopsis- We are not alone. On Ganymede, breadbasket of the outer planets, a Martian marine watches as her platoon is slaughtered by a monstrous supersoldier. Corey ☄️ This is a very well built book #2 in my opinion and I am obssessed! 🤩 Majority of the time, after reading book #2, that is when I decide if I will continue working through the series or not. The characters that have carried on through to this book are going strong. None of their relationships and stories are boring, they actually made this book more enjoyable because of the familiar feelings you have from book #1. We are introduced to new characters (of course 🤫😉) that are as striking, complicated and interesting as the others. The dynamic between the two "groups" is umph! 🤌 I will stay away from the actual story line as I DO NOT trust myself talking about it without blurting out spoilers.... There were too many "oooh" and "aaaah" moments..... Overall, I really enjoyed Caliban's War and really look forward to jump on to book #3. I've been reading James SA Corey's Expanse series after my interest in the Amazon show. I bought the aniversary cover of Leviathan Wakes but found it really hard to get through as a physical book. I really would've struggled had I not seen the show. However, I loved listening to Caliban's War as an audiobook and it made it so much easier to digest. I've also listened to the novella Drive as audio but I kind of wished I physically read that one as it is pretty tense. I will be so real with you, my love for book 3 of The Expanse is entangled with my love for season 3 of the show. they have their differences, but they're alike in my heart. bad reviews of this one are pretty funny, & mostly claim that it was boring. What This Week 😊 This week just flew by 😅 I had a pretty intense week at work, but I still managed to have some time for fun stuff. 📚 Read: I made some progress with Cibola Burn by James SA Corey, the fourth book in The Expanse. These books are huge, and so much happening plotwise, so it always takes me forever to get through them, but I'm having a really good time with it 😊 I also read about 100 pages of The Principle of Moment by Esmie Jikiemi-Pearson. It's sort of a mix of space opera, time travel and Regency romance, and it's a little confusing so far, but I'm interested in seeing where it's going 😊 🎬 Watched: apart from continuing my Star Trek TNG rewatch, I also watched Rebel Moon: The Scargiver. This was somehow even worse than the first one: horrible dialogue, absolutely no plot, it's basically 2 hours of fighting on a farm. It looks cool I guess, but that's about it 🤷🏻♀️ Go watch Dune instead, or literally any Star Wars movie, you'll have a much better time. 🎧 Listened to: I don't listen to a lot of podcasts, but when I do it's almost always something related to movies and tv shows. If you’ve seen the trailer or heck just read the plot description of ‘Arthur The King’ then you know what to expect from it and exactly how it’s going to end, it’s the only reason it was even made. It’s the classic uplifting inspirational story of an animal helping a person or team believe in themselves in the face of adversity. These films are crowd pleasers, and this is no different, I had a great time with this. Now going into this, I had no idea that not only was this film in the motherland, Dominican Republic, but that it also takes place there, and I’ll be perfectly honest, as a Dominican this flick gained a lot of points from me due to that as it was great seeing my country have such a big role in a big production. It tells the true story of Mikael Lindnord, a pro adventure racer who is attempting a Dominican Republic endurance race 435 miles in 5 days. Along the way, he comes across a stray dog he names Arthur and together along with his teammates rally around their dog as they attempt to win. Simon Cellan Jones’ direction is solid, he keeps the film moving smoothly investing us in the story to have the triumphant moments hit their intended purpose. The highlight of his direction is a zip lining sequence where the team needs to do it in order to get to the other side. . It starts off fun before it got intense, and he did a great job having us on the edge, even if we knew how it would play out for the most part. Like most dog films, they make you feel a ton of emotions, and you’re just hoping the dog doesn’t die at the end of the film. Ukai, who plays Arthur was as great as you could hope from a dog performance, hitting you in the feels and he gives a jolt of life to the film when he joins the team halfway through the film. Mark Wahlberg has been on a super cold streak for a few years now, mainly doing streaming films whether through Netflix, Apple TV+ or Paramount+, but it’s one of his better performances in the last few years. It took longer than the first book, but I wrapped up book 2 of the Expanse, Caliban’s War. The book was great. This one had a few lulls compared to book 1. But that might also have been the reading slump that I was fighting through while I read this. I am still enjoying the story and am looking forward to the next book. There was good character development of the main group and it was interesting getting some insight into the Martian and UN politics. I also appreciate how these huge stories are grounded in a smaller, much more personal story. In this case looking for a little girl. The story has a satisfying ending, but you can feel the bigger story building. The twist at the very end has me excited for the next book as well! #scifi #theexpanse #spaceopera

El Imperio de Laconia se está desmembrando, pero las sombras destructoras que se hallan tras las puertas buscan el modo de acabar con la forma de vida que las está utilizando. Elvi Okoye lidera una misión científica con el objetivo de comprender a los constructores y qué fue lo que acabó con ellos. Aliana Tanaka emprende la búsqueda del desaparecido emperador Duarte. Y la tripulación de la Rocinante tratan de hallar un modo para que la especie siga existiendo más allá de los próximos sucesos. James S. A. Corey es el pseudónimo utilizado por Daniel Abraham (1969) y Ty Frank (1969) para escribir la saga The Expanse, una saga que ha tenido un gran éxito y ha dado la vuelta al mundo al contar con el apoyo de George R. R. Martin y ser nominada al Premio Hugo y al Premio Locus en 2012 con El Despertar del Leviatán. Y… a la novena, y última, va la vencida. Mejor tarde que nunca. La Caída del Leviatán es para mí el mejor libro de la saga y, exceptuando el pico de genialidad de Los Juegos de Némesis, con diferencia. Más allá de la espectacularidad “palomitera” que caracteriza la saga, este libro consigue un equilibrio perfecto entre todos sus elementos. Esta reflexión no la hago por el final que, aunque sorprendente en algunos aspectos, es previsible en otros. No, la reflexión la hago porque al fin le dan un carácter más amplio a los propios protagonistas, en especial a Naomi y a Holden, que dejan de ser estereotipos que viven el presente a personas que piensan en la huella que dejarán en el futuro. Y sí, como todos los demás libros de la saga, está repleto de escenas espectaculares y acción al más puro estilo de un blockbuster, pero… en esta ocasión consiguen entremezclar a la perfección todo eso con un carácter introspectivo que va mucho más allá. En conclusión; un final tremendo de una saga bastante irregular, pero que ha valido la pena llegar hasta aquí. ¿Habéis leído la novela? ¿Qué os parece mi reseña? Finished the last book in the Expanse series a couple of days ago! This is superb sci-fi and story telling. I deliberately stalled my reading the last 100 pages because I didn’t want to part from the characters.
