Do you have Field Day at your elementary school? The kids love it, but I must admit that it was not my favorite day as a teacher. I taught at four different elementary schools in my career, and it was interesting to see how each school arranged their field day activities. For one school, it was an all-day event, but for the other three schools, it was a half-day event. I wrote this set of scripts one year when my students were assigned to the afternoon group. Building background knowledge is a critical component of any literacy unit. I Do: ascertain your students’ current level of background knowledge. This can be done in a number of ways - turn and talk, brainstorm, brain dump to a time limit etc. We Do: begin building background knowledge. Persuasive Writing Idea - PESTO Paragraphs 🌟 This lesson took inspo from one of the fabulous lessons from @hellocleverbean I’d already taught lessons focused on these persuasive devices so the aim of this lesson was to put it all together. I Do: Explicitly teach students what the acronym PESTO stands for. Explain why this framework is useful for a persuasive paragraph and when it might be used. We Do: Brainstorm ideas for a PESTO paragraph. I wanted the students to be able to connect with my modelled writing so asked students to brainstorm based on what needs changing, fixing or added to the school. I already had my modelled writing paragraph idea planned so added the ‘ply of toilet paper’ suggestion. I Do: model how to write a PESTO paragraph. Have students identify where each persuasive device was used. You Do: Students select their own idea and practice writing their own PESTO paragraph 💫

Reading fluency comes from repeated reading experiences! 🗣️ YOU are a huge part of this for your child, and it starts as early as you start reading with your little. From the earliest experiences listening to stories, children are learning that print and books convey messages. They start to understand that they enjoy these stories and messages, and the seed of love for reading is planted. 🌱 Early read-alouds are FULL of phonemic awareness gold, like rhyming words, alliteration, repetition, and more skills that help begin building the foundation of later reading skills. Even as children grow and learn to read on their own, the modeling of reading and fluency stays critical. And by the way, this doesn’t have to turn into a high-pressure situation for your kiddo, or an opportunity to quiz your child on their reading or comprehension every night. Keep it fun, and make it a special time that you and your little get to spend together! 🫶 Simply by listening to us read, our children make valuable observations on HOW we read, that they can bring into their own independent reading experiences. Make sure you are reading TO and WITH your child every day. If you can’t do 20 minutes, try for 10, or even 5! Happy Reading! 📖🤍
