When I was 5 an animal specialist came to our house with everything from bunny rabbits to boa constrictors! Then in high school we had a field trip to the Naval Air base where we got free Rita's water ice afterward since it was the first day of spring. ๐ธ But I don't think anything can compare to releasing my first book. CW: neglect, abandonment, verbal abuse, anxiety/panic disorder, alcoholism, foster care Sharkita (Kita) goes through life holding her breath. She lives in constant fear of her mother messing up again and her and her siblings being split up and placed in foster care. As time passes, things begin to get worse and worse. Kita struggles to take care of her siblings and make everyone believe things are fine. I was so excited to read this book. The cover alone had me intrigued. However, it started slow for me and left me very disappointed. My book bestie told me to hang in there until chapter 16, and she was so right. I couldnโt put it down. If you donโt mind a slow burn, I highly recommend this book. I purchased this book with my own coin!

The Iron Tower Trilogy was published back in 1984, written by Dennis L McKiernan. I picked these three up cheap in a combination of thrift stores and library book sale. I have yet to read them but what fantastic covers. The Iron Tower Trilogy sounds precisely like a โretellingโ of the Lord of the Rings. An evil Dark Lord is returning to the land and the High King of Mithgar summons the wee Warrows led by Tuck to join an army of Dwarves, Elves and men to challenge the rising darkness that spreads over the land. Wild Robot by Peter Brown - an absolutely beautiful, funny and quirky Middle Grade I read with my 11yo. The film comes out later this year. Highly recommend as a read aloud. True Biz by Sara Novic - part of my #12recommendations and just WOW. Full review coming this week! Wild Song by Candy Gourlay - part of the Children's and YA @jhalakprize shortlist. I LOVED this story set in 1904 of a teen girl whose tribe in the Philippine mountains is invited to America to be part of the St Louis World's Fair. A fascinating slice of history, beautifully written and not like any Children's Lit I've read before. โญโญโญโญ Girls series by Jacqueline Wilson - I mentioned book 1 in my March wrap up and I finished listening to these this month ahead of Jacqueline releasing the grown up sequel in September. I *thoroughly* enjoyed this nostalgic trip down memory lane; I was giggling away on my drives to and from work. Girls Under Pressure has particular focus on weight loss and eating disorders, and the language used is hard to read now, but at the same time is such a realistic depiction of the messaging us millennial girls grew up with ๐ โญโญโญ How to Die Famous by Benjamin Dean - also shortlisted for @jhalakprize. This was a fun read but became a bit too far fetched for me at the end and I didn't feel overly invested in any of the characters. So Loud! Rudy is so excited (and a little nervous), her grandmother Maman Bozorg is coming for a visit and she just canโt stop talking. Her father shushes her, trying to hear the airport announcements. Rudy sees a water fountain and notices how the water turns on and off. Maybe she should treat her voice like that fountain, but how will she know when to be quiet and when to be loud? Throughout the next few days the same problem seems to keep happening. Rudy knows she can be loud outside in the playground, letting her tap flood over with words. Then in school, the teacher states that she needs Rudy to use her quiet voice. Finding the balance is proving to be more difficult than Rudy realized. Seeing the frustration on Rudyโs face her grandmother offers a story from when she was a young girl and encourages her to use her voice. To be proud of her strong voice and to let it flow! I love the message behind this story. Often it is so easy to silence a child but we need to remind them that their voice matters. Whether it is loud and fierce or soft and strong, it needs to be heard. Do you like to buddy read books? (buddy reading is when you read a book at the same time as a friend - or multiple friends - often deciding on certain chapters to read each day) โ๏ธ๐ก๏ธ I recently did a buddy read of SLEEPING SPELLS AND DRAGON SCALES with Kate, my almost ten-year-old. It's the first time I've buddy read with my own child and it was really fun! I loved chatting about the chapters with her and hearing her predictions. The author recently came to do a visit at Kate's school, so she was especially excited when we got this book in the mail! This was a really sweet middle grade book about a girl managing her Type 1 Diabetes and her old friend turned reluctant school project partner who can't seem to stay awake or play soccer like he used to, but can't figure out why. I loved seeing Liam and Alaina rediscover their friendship and help each other through their struggles. Their friendship was so special. I also liked the chronic illness representation and discussions surrounding them. One of my favorite aspects of the book was the fairy tale theme woven throughout, both real fairy tales and ones the students created. It added a lovely flair of magic to the story. In true me-fashion, as soon as I hit the halfway point I couldn't stop reading so I finished before Kate did. I'm excited to hear her final thoughts once she's done! *Thank you to @wendyswore and @shadowmountainpub for sending me an ARC and a finished copy of this book to review!
