I'm so tired of recording 😒 Thyra going potty just because the apartment complex property managers refuse to hold up their own policies. We've had unleased dogs and irresponsible owners running up on us while taking her potty. The company has basically said it's our fault for having a large breed dog and having her trained. I've informed them multiple times that she's a service dog in training, and this has caused issues with her behavior 🙄 such as not going potty for days and being overly friendly assuming the dog wants to play, I have even had to kick dogs away from us while owndo nothing. These dogs have set thyra's training back, and I'm terrified this will cause her to become reactive, costing me thousands of dollars and hours. I feel completely ready to throw in the towel even though I know I need her help with certain situations with my health. I'm angry for not being taken seriously, and I'm scared that if she bit another dog in self-defense, we'll be blamed (one reason I record her outgoing potty). What does your gear look like? Azul and Belle have matching gear now. These cape/packs attach to the OneTigris Guardian harness. They wear the harness nearly every day, but only wear the packs occasionally when I want their labels more visible. Azul's patches started out teal & purple when he was younger, then I switched to a red, white, and blue color scheme for him. Now he's back to teal. Belle has been using mis-matched patches, so I finally ordered teal for both of them. With the black gear and black dogs, I really wanted a color that stood out! They each have a set of backup gear that I keep in the car for emergencies or in case I need to label them unexpectedly. ‼️UPDATE‼️ As you guys know I've been working with Mica on weekends in pet friendly locations as a means to take a healthy step back from working, evaluate his behavior, give him time and rest as well as reinforce the basics in his training as I showed last weekend. My lovely mother @tmpag00 has been taking great care of him while I've been in college and keeping me updated on his behavior, sending me pictures and generally letting me know how he's doing so I just wanna say I appreciate her for that 🥺🫶💕💕 I miss Mica SO much but it makes me happy to know that he's been doing well; working with him and seeing him on the weekends brings me joy even if I wish he could be with me in college. My mom has told me he's been really good at home and that on walks even when dogs bark at him, he hasn't really been reacting as of late! (Which is great news!) In addition, we also got his neuter procedure done today 🥺 He also got a dental cleaning and his hernia taken care of. His blood work was good, the procedures went mostly well and everything is stitched up and now my boy is in recovery. Isn’t it just so pretty to think? ☁️☁️☁️ Timber had such a big boy working day and did so well! Of course, he made mistakes. He’s 9 months old, but overall, he was incredible! A 16-hour workday (his longest work day yet), his first movie, two sit-down restaurants, two sit down coffee stops,like six sets of escalators, a midnight book release, and SO MUCH MORE! He was complimented by restaurant staff and our Portland police for his good behavior, stayed focused and tasked correctly during an incredibly stressful event, and stayed focused and alert during a high stress unexpected off-leash moment. Proud just doesn’t cover it. Nearly five years ago, I experienced a traumatic incident that led to my development of PTSD. Coping with debilitating panic attacks, sensory issues, vivid flashbacks, mood swings, trust problems, and an overwhelming fear. I was isolating myself from friends and family, I grappled with anger and confusion, unable to discuss my assault from shame and embarrassment. It wasn't until late 2022 that I received a PTSD diagnosis, prompting me to explore the benefits of a service dog, a concept unfamiliar to me as l'd never heard of a SD for SA victims until my doctor suggested it. Looking back I can't believe how far I have come in the last year. I want to thank all of you for the love and encouragement you've provided, your support has been invaluable. Sharing my journey not only has facilitated my healing but also allowed me to raise awareness about mental health and trauma's profound impact. We are kicking off 2024 with Bo’s official retirement, I’m so sad to say it but I don’t think I’m even comfortable doing a final trip together, introducing Timber into the household proved to be a bigger challenge for Bo than I initially thought. Lately, Bo's behavior has taken a turn for the worse, disregarding even the simplest commands like sit, stay, and down. It seems as though Bo is trying to convey that he's had enough. On the other hand, Timber is making remarkable progress, and I can't help but feel really excited about his growth. However, due to assumptions that I'm training Timber for someone else and because my disability isn't apparent, I feel the need to take my time with Timber's public access training. Although there are a few issues that I need to address with Timber, I receive countless compliments on his impeccable behavior and the effectiveness of his training. Therefore, we are currently focusing on short and efficient public access, as well as his three regular weekly training sessions. Our service dogs in training get a solid balance of work/training time and play time to just be a goofy dog. This helps prevent burnout and gives them more fulfillment in life. Admittedly because of the canine respiratory illness going around, this has gotten a little more tricky when trying to take the dogs places that they can legally be off leash at while avoiding greetings with other dogs. Luckily when we visit the Portland area, we know about some hidden gems to take the dogs to and go at off hours to reduce likelihood of seeing anyone else. 🤗A great day for SD Training or any dog training for that matter! 🙃 As many of you know, my group classes are on hold until spring. This is due to some health flares I've been going through since I had covid, as well as, starting immunosuppression therapy. So, I've had to be really careful around public and group settings. 😔 This also means that I haven't gotten Byron out for training in public as much as I'd like. He's doing well for only 10 1/2 months old, but still gets really excited around people and other dogs. He's done amazing with Demo Dog work with my reactive clients, but we still have a lot of work to do. 🦮 Yesterday, was a great overall training day! It was far from perfect, but gave us all the feedback we need to know what skills each dog needs to work on for the near future. It was the perfect opportunity to see where everyone's thresholds are in different settings & what WE handlers/ Guardians can improve on to help our dogs succeed. 🐕🦺 I typically suggest keeping training sessions as brief as the dog needs to keep training FUN. However, as SDs they're going to need to work through tiredness once in a while, they're going to have to work through stressful situations at some point. ☯️ So, this day was about balancing, not expecting too much from them too soon, while also putting them in potentially stressful situations (meaning they were tired, but still had to "work"). We advocated for each dog's needs to help them each be successful. They're all intact males under 3 years of age. But have all had a certain amount of training so far. All have sound genetics and temperament. Guess who just passed phase 3 "with flying colors" according to the testing trainer! 💕 . Falcon has excelled through the SD training program with Compass Key, and continues to exceed our expectations. We have been together since he was 8 weeks old, and now at 10 months he continues to be more than I ever imagined 💙 . Phase 4 is the final phase of the program to be officially certified through Compass, although we will be adding phase 5 (mobility support when his xrays are cleared at age 2), and phase 6 (airport/flight training). . Falcon must be neutered as a requirement of phase 4. After researching and discussing with our vet, we have decided to wait until Falcon is 2 to ensure he has reached full maturity before surgery. This gives us nothing but time to practice and get experience with public access training. So Falcon will be going even more places with me in the new year! . That's about it! It's not always easy being a pupper dog learning to be a service dog. Constantly working on being observant to mom's health stuff and not getting all the lovies from people, especially the little kiddos, is tough. We're all learning and growing our skills. Ignoring other dogs is difficult because all I want to do is play and be friends with everyone. I'm also working on not freaking out and whining because the boy is out of direct line of sight and same when dad's not in view. Do nothing is hard at times but getting easier with more practice at places. Learning to navigate the gym has been interesting. We watch brother as he chases a ball in a room (racquetball). Seeing myself in mirrors is still weird, but cool. Watching people play basketball is neat and loud(why is it so echo-ey in there). The weight room is odd, so many people and they are all using metal sticks, metal bones, and leashes to move with (barbells,dumbells, and cables). Best thing is pup cups after I'm done working on the weekend. Nearly five years ago, I experienced a traumatic incident that led to my development of PTSD. Coping with debilitating panic attacks, sensory issues, vivid flashbacks, mood swings, trust problems, and an overwhelming fear. I was isolating myself from friends and family, I grappled with anger and confusion, unable to discuss my assault from shame and embarrassment. It wasn't until late 2022 that I received a PTSD diagnosis, prompting me to explore the benefits of a service dog, a concept unfamiliar to me as I’d never heard of a SD for SA victims until my doctor suggested it. Looking back I can’t believe how far Bo and I have come in the last year. Fun fact: I wanted to go to school for art but I thought it wasn’t for me cause I doubted my self, and then wanted to do music but then doubted myself again. So, I’m going into communications to hopefully get somewhere into music. I love music. I got over 30 CDs, 20 Vinyls and only like 4 cassettes. I think music is so beautiful. It’s not the production of the music to me, it’s the beauty in song writing. I hope one day to get singing lessons cause I suck at singing so I can write and sing my own music one day.
