RINGO STARR - STOP AND SMELL THE ROSES (1981) The eighth Ringo Starr album "Stop And Smell The Roses" was recorded from july 1980 to january 81 and released in november. In 1979 some things happened in Ringo's life. After three unsuccesful albums he had no recorded contract. Nevertheless he went into a studio in Copenhagen and recorded some songs. But he didn't release them on an album. Because of his heavy party life and drinking he collapsed in Monte Carlo. He came to the hospital and had to have surgery. Shortly after that incident his house burnt down. He lost all his Beatles memorabilia. In april 81 he married actress Barbara Bach. They met on a film shoot one year before. First recording sessions for the new album began in july 80. Like on his successful albums of the mid 70s he invited some friends to support him. He asked Ronnie Wood, Harry Nilsson, Stephen Stills, his former bandmates and others. First recordings were with Paul McCartney, then with George Harrison. John Lennon also wrote songs and wanted to help him, but that didn't happen. Ringo met him in New York in november 80 where they talked about the new songs. Sadly John got shot in december 80 and they couldn't work together no longer. The album had six producers: Ringo Starr, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Ronnie Wood, Harry Nilsson and Stephen Stills. Because of this it sounds a little bit mixed and more like a compilation. The music is poprock in the early 80s style. The sound is more fresh than on the previous albums. Ringo's record company didn't like the songs so that he had to look for another. Finally it was released on Boardwalk Records in Europe and RCA in the US. Our thanks to @entertainersuk for providing an amazing evening for our team at @liverpool_philharmonic last night! @davidalaceyisfranksinatra had tears in his eyes during a standing ovation after his performance of the @paulankaofficial classic “My Way” - it really was an emotional evening! It was always going be something special, returning to the Great Musical City of Liverpool for the first time in many years and for that reason the @georgeharrisonofficial masterpiece “Something”made a rare appearance in the programme. (You can scroll to a clip of the number being rehearsed) The Philharmonic Hall is one of the great British Concert Halls and the atmosphere in there is absolutely electrifying and that definitely rubbed off on the performers on stage. El 13 de mayo de 1970 se produjo en Nueva York el estreno mundial (en Reino Unido y Europa se estrenó el 20 de mayo) del film documental sobre los últimos días de los Bestles como grupo dirigido por MicHael Lindasy-Hogg. Tras las desavenencias surgidas en 1969 entre los músicos una vez publicado el doble 'The Beatles', la banda se encontraba en una encrucijada. Paul McCartney, quien se había convertido tras la trágica muerte de su manager Brian Epstein en el motor del grupo, opinaba que para recargar energía y creatividad había que volver a las raíces y retomar los conciertos en directo, ya que desde 1966 no habían vuelto a pisar un escenario. A Lennon no terminaba de entusiasmarle la idea y Harrison se negó en redondo a volver a las giras, aunque no mostró inconveniente en rodar una película. De la idea original de volver a las raíces, surgió el primigenio nombre de la película y un hipotético álbum que le acompañaría: 'Get Back'. Como es conocido, ese proyecto se aparcó para acometer 'Abbey Road' (el verdadero último álbum de los cuatro Beatles). El film se rodó durante todo el mes de enero de 1969 y recoge momentos de los ensayos y grabaciones de temas que aparecerían tanto en 'Abbey Road' como 'Let it Be'. En total se filmaron aproximadamente noventa y seis horas para esta película, de las que seleccionaron ochenta minutos para el corte final. La idea de filmar un concierto en directo se mantuvo y largas fueron las discusiones para determinar la ubicación del evento. Se tuvieron en cuenta lugares convencionales como el Roundhouse de Londres, pero también se consideraron lugares más inusuales como un molino de harina en desuso y un trasatlántico. Uno de los lugares sugeridos preferidos fue un anfiteatro romano en el norte de África. Sin embargo ninguna de las ideas obtuvo el entusiasmo unánime, y con tiempo limitado por el compromiso próximo de Starr a la película The Magic Christian, se acordó iniciar los ensayos, sin una decisión firme sobre la ubicación del concierto.
