I’ve gone outside my comfort zone this school year for my art and it’s helped build my skill and point me into a direction where I want my art to be. I want it to be fun, colorful, nostalgic, and personal. I make art firstly for me, and get the pleasure of sharing it with peers and lovers alike. I feel lucky to explore this passion and make art that I’m proud of and continue to work to be better. I want to make art for people and have them question it, complement it, but most importantly appreciate the time spent and take time out of their day to admire the art that this world and artists create.

NAME OF THE WORK/DATE: “CUTTING DOWN THE TALL TREES” / 2018 ARTIST: Reynaldo Alcocer SIZE: MATERIALS: Acrylic and primer on paper towels "DESCRIPTION: During his study at the Southern Cross University of Lismore, Alcocer would “appropriate”paper towels from the university’s bathrooms. Enthralled by the texture, likening them to ancient scrolls, Alcocer painted his works almost exclusively on these paper towels. This art is depicted as a semi-abstract narrative of one of history’s most horrific genocides, the Rwandan Genocide. To put into context, the genocide was perpetrated by the ethnic Hutu-controlled government and military that slaughtered more than 700,000 ethnic Tutsi as well as moderate Hutu who either protected or sympathised with their Tutsi neighbours. The genocide and the then-Rwandan government ended when the rebel group, the Rwandan Patriotic Front, took over the country and drove off the remaining perpetrators out from Rwanda, however there have been unfortunate reports of the RPF’s own war crimes. This work examines religiously-motivated terrorist attacks perpetrated by extremist from four distinct religions: Christianity, Islam, Buddhism and Hinduism. The depictions are rendered as a semi-abstract visual with the extremist portrayed as a dark menacing triangle as if to resemble a deadly spear-head pointed at the victims.
