We spent a couple of whirlwind days in New Orleans. There is a great RV Resort within walking distance of the French Quarter which was perfect for us so we didnโt even need to unhitch! Our days were filled with lots of walking in and out of shops and museums as well as trying all the must have foods. Barre & Hard CoreโฆDone I donโt see much of a difference between my progress pictures, but I am stronger physically, mentally and emotionally!!! I fought hard to keep myself accountable and I am proud for sticking with it. I wasnโt going to post the pics, but changed my mind. What a crazy ride this has beenโฆ Started strong, working through the programs and focusing on my goals. Had to do modifications throughout, since I donโt have certain equipment or exercise machines. I figured out other ways of getting it done. No Excuses!!! It took me a little bit longer to complete them, with life throwing me curve balls and shaking things up. Testing me in many ways. I had plenty of days of not wanting to do it, but it done and stayed consistent. I kept my head down and stayed focused on what matters, and I didnโt give up on myself or finishing my goals. Barre Week 5 Modifications were made, but no excuses!! Done Hard Core Week 4 Working hard on my core! Done This has been a tough week!!! My mom has been in the hospital since last Wednesday night and she was moved from ICU yesterday. Sheโs doing better and weโre waiting to hear when she will be released. There were definitely some days that I didnโt feel like working out, but I still got up and worked out. Some days I did it after work. I got in a little over 63 miles for the week. I am still trying to find a vehicle so I and not always walking to and from work. I canโt believe I am starting the last week of Barre and Hard Core, tomorrow!! Iโm excited to see the final results. The next National Park on our travels was @bigbendnps It is named for the huge bend in the Rio Grande river that changes the course of the river from a southeastern to a northeastern flow. The river also marks both the southern border of the park and the border between the US and Mexico. Big Bend is known for having three distinct ecosystems: the mountains, desert and of course the Rio Grande river. We decided we wanted to explore the park by doing something a little different so we booked a guided canoe trip along the Rio Grande through Hot Springs Canyon. We got very lucky because no one else booked our trip so we ended up with our own private tour down the river. Our guide was fantastic and has been doing river tours for 30+ years. He was a fountain of knowledge about the river and the history of the park. The day started at 9am when we were taken to the canoe launch spot. The river was very tranquil and calm, and it was early enough that we saw the occasional bird, fish and even snake! There were also several cows and horses that wandered across the river at shallower points. We arrived at the Hot Springs around lunch time (after navigating a couple of baby rapids ๐ ). The Hot Springs were developed into a spa/bathhouse by J.O. Langford in the early 1900โs. It attracted visitors from far and wide to treat various ailments and illnesses. After a quick dip in the remains of the bathhouse we walked around some of the historic buildings and old hotel. For lunch we decided beached our canoes on the Mexican side of the river to get more shade, so we technically stopped for lunch in Mexico! Afterwards we continued on through Hot Springs Canyon which was absolutely gorgeous. ๐Guadalupe Peak, 8.76miles, 3,000ft elev. gain, 5hrs12mins. The highest peak in Texas! While staying in Carlsbad we popped over the border quickly into Texas to visit @guadalupemountainsnps This was a TOUGH one! Although 9 miles doesnโt sound too bad, there is a lot of elevation. The trail begins climbing almost immediately and gains 2000ft of elevation in the first 1.5miles. This is mostly made up of several switchbacks that feel relentless. It was a very cloudy day so we couldnโt really see a lot and spent the majority of the hike literally in the clouds. This was particularly weird when on the narrower parts that cut into the side of the mountain because you canโt see anything above or below you. This was the same at the summit; once we made it up there we couldnโt see anything to give us perspective on what we had just climbed. All in all it was a really enjoyable hike with some challenging parts. We passed lots of hikers on the trail and the camaraderie was lovely. Carlsbad Cavern is a HUGE limestone cave in a fossil reef that was laid down by an inland sea about 265 million years ago. It is over 30 miles long and the โBig Roomโ is 8.2 acres, making it the largest, readily accessible cave chamber in North America. It is also home to about 400,000 Brazilian free-tailed bats! After being discovered in 1898 it was used for guano mining before being designated a National Monument in 1923. We reserved a timed entry ticket ahead of time which we were glad we did because it was spring break and it was very busy! After arriving and exploring the museum we walked down through the Natural Entrance to get in which is definitely the best way if youโre able to. Otherwise there are elevators that that take you the 750ft up or down into the main cavern. The entrance trail is 1.25 miles long and just keeps going deeper and deeper into the ground while you watch the last circle of natural light disappear overhead. The NPS have installed some well placed lights along the way so youโre not in complete darkness (and can bring a headlamp if you want) but there are some areas that are pretty dark so you get a really good feel for how deep underground you are. Once we made down into the cavern itself we walked the loop around the โBig Roomโ which is a 1.25 mile loop. Here we saw all kinds of cave formations, including stalagmites and stalactites. After White Sands we continued north to stay in Santa Fe for a few days. While there we took a day trip to @petroglyphnps This is a really interesting NP unit because itโs right next to the city of Albuquerque and itโs spread out over a couple of key points of interest. It is home to one of the largest petroglyph sites in North America. Petroglyphs are symbols that have been carved in rock; not to be confused with pictographs which are painted on. The petroglyphs found at this monument were nearly all created by ancestors of todayโs Pueblo people. Puebloans have lived in the Rio Grande Valley since before 500 A.D and it is believed that the majority of the petroglyphs were carved from about 1300 through the late 1680s. The first place we visited was Boca Negra Canton which has a couple of different trails to explore. We went up Mesa Point which is very steep but gives you a great view at the top! Then we visited an area that contains three volcanoes that are know as โThe Three Sistersโ. @whitesandsnps was one of our favorite National Parks and we were lucky enough to experience it with Benโs parents! White Sands is the largest gypsum dune field in the world. Millions of years ago this part of the US was covered by ocean, and layers of gypsum was deposited on the sea floor. The rise and fall of the sea level created the gypsum sand that we see today. Itโs so surreal standing and looking out across hundreds of bright white dunes that go on for miles. If we didnโt know any better it looks like it could be snow! So much so that itโs common for visitors to bring sleds with them to play in the sand. We made it to New Mexico! Our first campground was way up in the mountains near Alamogordo. Itโs a large group camp with a mixture of cabins, RV sites, tent sites and a large lodge where they can host weddings and other large group events. Itโs low season so we had the entire place to ourselves. Itโs also VERY remote so that means absolutely no cell service. We would make our way to the main lodge each day to be able to use the wifi and get any work/tasks done. Our radios came in handy too for when we needed to communicate with each other! There were lots of animals on the property too; we would get visited by wild turkeys in the morning and see deer roaming around during the day. The ownersโ horses would trot past each morning (we think for breakfast time) and there were some miniature donkeys by the lodge that we liked to say hi to on our walks. We stayed a full week here and by the end of it we experienced our first snow in the trailer! Luckily the temperature didnโt drop too much but we definitely experienced a couple of chilly nights. Our second @harvesthosts in a weekend was @saddlehawkranch We parked right on the property nestled between beehives and a chicken coop. The ranch is owned by a couple who operate it as an Equestrian Education Facility and an Equine Safe Haven. Their mission is to provide educational opportunities with horses for the economically and physically disadvantaged. A lot of the horses, mules and donkeys that are used for this were once destined for slaughter and have instead been purchased and rehabilitated. They also have several privately owned performance horses that are trained in disciplines like roping, reining and dressage. The owners were extremely welcoming and after giving us a few rules of the ranch we were encouraged to explore and meet all the animals. On our last Sunday in Tucson we visited Tumacรกcori National Historic Park. We werenโt sure what to expect from this visit as itโs a small relatively unknown site a bit off the beaten path. It turned out to be one of our favorite places we have visited! Even though it was a Sunday it wasnโt very busy and the whole place is very peaceful and calming. We arrived just in time to join a ranger guided tour, which was excellent, and meant we learned a lot more than if we had taken ourselves around. Tumacรกcori was originally inhabited by Oโodham and Yaqui people before being turned into a mission by the Jesuits (and later Franciscans) who were Catholic priests from Spain. As part of their mission to spread Catholicism they built the church that can still be seen today. It was never finished however and there has been a great deal of effort put in by the NPS to restore and preserve as much of the building as possible. There were also a couple of live demonstrations on the grounds. One was a traditional blacksmith and the other was freshly made tortillas. Built in 1939, Old Tucson is a well known and still used film set. It has since been opened to the public with various western themed shows and activities. We had a lot of fun here! We saw the likes of Calamity Jane, Billy the Kid and Jesse James take part in gun fights, jail breaks and can-can shows! We had a great morning exploring the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. The museum is really well designed and contains lots of different desert wildlife and information. It is located on the outskirts of Tucson right in the desert itself so they have taken advantage of the natural curve and flow of the land to create a really nice experience. The best part was a show called โRaptors in Flightโ. Visitors stand out in a large open area where several different large birds are let out to do a demonstration. The handlers guide them to perch on nearby trees and cacti while telling you some interesting facts about each species. The coolest part though is that while doing this the birds are flying right over your heads, in some cases you can feel the wings brush past you in the air! We also saw lots of snakes and other reptiles as well as a mountain lion, bob cat and several other critters.
