It is in the Chihuahuan desert of southern New Mexico. It includes a large cave chamber, the Big Room, a natural limestone chamber which is almost 4,000 feet long, 625 feet wide, and 255 feet high at the highest point. It is the third-largest chamber in North America and the seventh-largest in the world. I have been to a lot of caves and I think this was probably my favorite and the best so far. Like the Couch’s Spadefoot highlighted last week, the New Mexico Spadefoot (Spea multiplicate) also has a special appendage, called a spade, located on its hind limbs that is used like a shovel to dig out burrows. While the Couch’s spadefoot’s protrusion is sickle shaped, the New Mexico Spadefoot’s is more wedge shaped. Tadpoles of this species may become carnivorous if they share a vernal pool with ingestible fairy shrimp. Join Debbie Buecher and Diana Northup, as they present the importance of bats and connections to the microbial world. Their survey of bats focuses on the bat microbiome to understand how it may provide protection from diseases, such as white-nose syndrome. Visitors will have the opportunity to meet two rehabilitating bats, Rosie and Manny! Debbie Buecher is a bat biologist with 35 years of experience working with bats, especially in Arizona and New Mexico. She owns Buecher Biological Consulting in Tucson, AZ and conducts bat surveys using mist netting, cave and mine surveys, emergence counts, acoustic surveys, radio telemetry, and PIT tagging. Her clients include Federal, State, and County Agencies plus numerous private environmental consulting firms. Diana Northup has been studying organisms that live in caves since 1984. Her lab at the University of New Mexico is collaborating with Debbie Buecher to investigate the potential for white-nose syndrome (WNS) to infect NM and AZ bats. They hope to identify potential microbes living on the bats that might service as biocontrol agents for WNS. WOW 🤯 Carlsbad Caverns is hands down one of the most mind blowing places I've ever seen. And it's so accessible to absolutely everyone (wheelchair, elderly, children, etc) it really should not be missed! Dog owner? You can visit too! See last paragraph 😊 Use the Carlsbad Caverns NP page to make a time reservation. When you get in line inside the visitor center, your name has to be on the list for that time. Like many others, we opted to walk down via the switchbacks through the amphitheater and the natural entrance. For those unable to do so, the elevator is a more accessible way to reach the "big room" - the giant Cavern at a depth of 754 feet underground. That's 1 1/2 times the height of the Washington Monument! If it is an option for you, walking down the switchbacks was an unforgettable experience. Just when you think it can't go down any more, it does. Again and again. It's incredible. My mind will never be able to grasp how many millions of years the cave formations have been dripping and slowly building to such great heights (or depths). The other part that was messing with my head was manmade - to be so deep underground and able to use a full modern bathroom, cafeteria, and Gift Shop. Really bizarre. So where was Rudy? This is one of the only National Parks that provide a kennel to lock your dog in while you visit. It's just a room with separate large cages, not a daycare, but it was such a relief to know we could enjoy the Cavern without worry. It's located in the same building as the visitor center and Gift Shop. No reservations, first come first serve. The largest kennels fill up first. $15 for the day. My top tip: Be there at 8 am. Be one of the first to head down. Most photos I've seen of the natural entrance trail, it is packed with people. For us, there was just a handful scattered out, with lots of space to breathe and stop for photos. Couch’s Spadefoot (Scaphiopus couchii) are a species that are not often seen, as they spend much of their time in torpor buried underground. While they look like toads, spadefoots are not considered true toads for a few reasons. The biggest being that they lack parotoid glands. Parotoid glands are used by ‘true toads’ to secrete poisonous substances. While spadefoots lack this, they have their own neat evolutionary feature called a spade. Spades are located on the hind limbs; they are sickle shaped protrusions that can be used like a shovel to dig burrows. After descending down the natural entrance and past the Devil’s Den, the cave opens up to the Big Room where you can follow a 1.25 mile pathway to see all sorts of formations in this magical underground world. It’s definitely worth the extra time to see!

📍Carlsbad Caverns National Park Located in Carlsbad, New Mexico Arriving at Carlsbad Caverns with reservations in hand, we were ready to hike down into the darkness. There are two ways to get down into the Caverns either hike the trail down into the natural entrance or take the way that most people exit, the elevator, of course we choose to hike down to get the full experience. Walking down the trail into the depths of the earth, you finally lose the natural light, and it becomes dark. Luckily, the trail through the caverns is partially lit to be able to safely make your way down deeper. The whole trail is paved, making this place one of the most accessible caverns in the world and also the best preserved. Once you get down to where it becomes more flat, you will eventually make your way to the Big Room, the largest single cave by volume in North America. Here, you will see a 140-foot deep hole known as the bottomless pit, with the ceiling covered in stalactites and most of the floor covered in stalagmites. These caverns were formed millions of years ago when petroleum deep underground started to rise upward and mix with oxygen in the groundwater, creating sulfuric acid, which continued to rise upward, dissolving the limestone and leaving behind these caves. I didn't realize how deep underground we were until we arrived at the end where the elevators were located. Instead of it counting down the floors, it told you how many feet deep you were, 750 feet deep! Road Trip Day 6-Part 2! We made our way over to Carlsbad Caverns on our way back from Guadalupe Mountains since they are so close together! Only 25 minutes apart. We hiked our way 75 STORIES down into the caverns!! It really felt like it just kept going and going, down further into the earth. Highly recommend hiking down if you get the chance to go see the caverns! You miss so much if you take the elevator down. If you look closely in the last video, there is one of the ropes they’ve left from previous explorers climbing up into other chambers of the caverns! There was able 3 total that we saw. I’m no geologist but there’s something about seeing the history of the earth that just makes my explorer heart go pitter-patter, so needless to say I was fascinated by the caverns and just how absolutely enormous they are! (along with all of the different structures down there) I think even @the_real_schwen had a good time down there as well! The eighth and final day of the eclipse road trip was all about Carlsbad Caverns. In fact, after realizing the only opening spot was the day of my flight, I ended up rebooking my return flight for the next day, and it was worth the change. Taking the natural entrance gives you a sense of the scale of the cave that you’re about to enter. Within 1.25 miles you descend 750 ft into Devil’s Den. As you get deeper into the main cave, you will see a variety of cave formations that is so astounding.

The end of the trip, photographically. I had wanted to take this image - at Carlsbad Caverns - since I saw a similar image in QT Luong's photo book on the national parks "Treasured Lands: A Photographic Odyssey Through America's National Parks". It is to me the ultimate book of and on the national parks - and I always take a deep look at the book before I head out. Luong photographed himself about 100' below the natural entrance of Carlsbad Caverns - and if you look closely - I did the same thing. He did it on a tripod, while I did not (although I did have my little Platipod - and a small stone wall. I would lie on the trail to get the angle I wanted - which prompted a few questions from passers-by - and once I had my framing - and the coast was very clear - I set the timer for 20 seconds and ran 100' down the trail to get into the shot at just the right place - where the beam of light would help pick me out of the background. The exposure was for 10 seconds - so I had to stay quite still - but after 30 or so attempts - I had the framing and stillness I was after... Here are some highlights from the ranger led Kings Palace tour. This area is only accessible via a guided tour as the formations are more delicate and closer to the trail. The Kings Palace is the big room in the first photo with a flat dirt floor. It really does look like a royal chamber in a castle with a throne! Absolutely stunning formations throughout this area! The draperies were my favorites! See photo 5 for a great example. That's rock even though it looks like fabric! During the tour we also did two sessions where they shut out the lights. So we experienced total darkness this far underground. That's wild! We then lit one lantern to experience what the early explorers would have seen. Carlsbad Caverns National Park ✔️ In the same mountain range that we hiked to the tip of Texas on (the Guadalupe mountain range), over on the New Mexico side at @carlsbadcavernsnps you can hike miles down into the depths of the caverns to The Big Room and beyond…an absolutely opposite experience that sitting above the clouds. Realizing you’re in 250million years of the earths own doings—Cave hikes are always incredible cool, confusing and never not kinda creepy lol On the shockingly non creepy side of things, we went back that night for the famous bat flight where, out the same entrance we entered earlier, thousands of bats fly out for their nightly feeding flights. all electronics get powered down for the bats protection, so there’s no photos, but I can confirm we loved this experience way more than we expected. 🦇 #23 #nationalparkweek #nationalparklover #nationalparks #carlsbadcaverns #getoutdoors #newmexicotravel #hikenewmexico #newmexico #cavetour #cavehike #carlsbadcavernsnationalpark #bucketlistadventures

Carlsbad Caverns National Park averages 14.9 inches of precipitation annually. Some of this precipitation can come in the form of snow from January to March. While its usually less than an inch and a half, the snowmelt is crucial for setting the stage for spring wildflowers. Pink, red, yellow, orange, and purple blooms burst on to the scene once temperatures rise.
