Prague Week. Wednesday What… The carol ‘Good King Wenceslas’ is translated from a Czech poem. Wenceslas’ father ruled over Bohemia (region in the Czech Republic) but died. Initially his mother was banished and his grandmother was strangled with her own veil. But the Bohemian people later wanted Wenceslas and his brother to rule and so split the country in 2 and gave half to each brother. Wenceslas was a good man, giving charity to those in need, even going out in the cold snow to help others. Wenceslas’s younger brother was not happy and so on the 28th of September he murdered his own brother in order to gain complete control. Wenceslas was later made a saint and is celebrated throughout the world with his remains lying in St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague. On Dec 31st, 1992, Czechoslovakia peacefully dissolved, and on Jan 1st, 1993, the countries of Slovakia and the Czech Republic were born. Ever since, the Czech Republic has issued these 20 Korun, though in some years they were only minted to be sold in sets. The reverse has an image of a statue of Wenceslaus I, the Duke of Bohemia, and later known as Saint Wenceslas, riding a horse. He ruled from 921 until his assassination by his brother, according to legend, in 929 or 935. He was posthumously declared a king and a saint and is the patron saint of the Czech Republic. His statue is known as the Statue of Saint Wenceslaus and is located in Wenceslaus Square in Prague. The words surrounding him translate as "Saint Wencelas, do not let us and future ones perish." The obverse has an image of the crowned Czech lion. Made of brass plated steel by the @czech.mint, this one is from 2002 when 20,996,500 were minted.
