We can’t fight the river of life, and it sometimes forces or calls for separation from people we love. I’m philosophizing and hoping with this piece that we can hold tight our love and faith that we’ll reunite with our loved ones if we choose down the stream of time, whether in this lifetime or the next. Some pieces take years. This one poured out almost overnight. The combination of surrealism, minimalism, graphic elements, and sketchy style doodles will be back. BARB DEROUSIE Mixed media and wearable art earrings. Scattered Artist Tour - May 25-26, 11am-4pm 1522 Shorncliffe Road, Victoria, BC After a 33 year career in Nursing, Barb began her art journey in watercolour, showing her land and seascape paintings, culminating in her first solo show in 2019 at the Coast Collective Art Centre. Influenced by abstract artists and educators Nicholas Wilton, founder of Art2Life and the Creative Visionary Program, and UK artist Louise Fletcher, of Find Your Joy, Barb had never had so much fun creating! This was a Turning Point for Barb, as she uncovered a hidden passion for mixed media abstract expressionism, aptly naming her first solo show featuring this ‘new’ work in 2022. Over the past few years Barb has exhibited at the Sooke Fine Arts Show (‘21 & ‘22), the TD Paint-In (‘23), as well as other local venues. Early in 2024 Barb held a three week solo art show called Abstract Engagement, at the Gage Gallery in Victoria, BC which exemplified her growth as an artist compared to the earlier days of CVP. Barb is a member of a number of local art communities including the Sooke Fine Arts Society, the Arts & Culture Colwood Society, the Saanich Peninsula Arts & Crafts Society, as well as being an active member at the Gage Gallery Arts Collective, an artist run gallery located in Bastion Square. As a result of her solo show, she has also gained gallery representation in Duncan, BC at Excellent Frameworks—Home of E. J. Hughes. Inspiration comes to Barb in many forms, but especially in the natural world and by paying attention to what moves her. She uses an intuitive approach to creating—a call-and-response process, which provides her the freedom to paint more from what she feels, rather than painting using a reference. JANE PALLISER Scattered Artist, -3911 Ascot Drive Walking into an art room nonchalantly one day, Jane discovered art could fill a need for individual expression and would be a pursuit that didn’t involve her identical twin. Later, Teacher’s college introduced the technique of ‘Negative painting’ teaching her a new way to see and draw. A life threatening illness left her with a need to search spiritually. Art became a voice, a visual language, a creative tool to explore and discover the elements of art making, staying loose with her strokes, creating imaginative, sometimes whimsical imagery, often nature being her context & metaphor for her ideas. CHARLOTTE FRIEND Scattered Artist- 3390 Maplewood Rd May 25-26, 11am-4pm I began painting in March 2020. I love nature and dog walking (as well as dogs, of course), and find myself drawn to painting the beauty of the island around me. I have a particular penchant for painting trees as I enjoy experimenting with colours and blends to see where the painting will take me. Trees, to me, are a source of great fascination and respect, as I am in awe of their size, strength, solidity, and resilience in the face of the elements. I find great mystery in forests and the amazing array of life that exists within them. The beach and coastline are a place of solace for me, where I can walk and think. I have challenged myself to paint parts of areas that I walk and have surprised myself with some of the outcomes. Water, waves, rocks, and clouds have all been a learning curve, though I find I am growing in confidence with each attempt. Her training is a result of classes with many powerful instructors such as Michael and Nancy O’Toole and Richard McDiarmid who taught her to “see” in her drawing and to be fearless in the use of colour. Susan’s current work in acrylic and oil is loose and impressionistic, allowing the essence of the subject to speak to the viewer. Enamoured with the forests, plants, polliwogs, and other woodland critters in the Laurentian mountains north of Montreal where she was born, she studied and worked in the field of forest sciences. Her creative soul has been nourished by drawing and painting since elementary school. Judi works in watercolours, acrylics and pen and ink. She enjoys fusing her passion for adventures in nature – hiking, biking and kayaking – with painting, often en plein air. Judi is part of the Victoria Al Frescoes and Westshore Artists plein air painting groups. MAGGY MCGEE, acrylic painter Location: 3987 Blenkinsop Road May 25-26, 2024, 11am-4pm Hello, My name is Maggy McGee (nee Tong). Growing up in Hong Kong I learned Chinese calligraphy for years and some Chinese watercolor painting. Interest in studying art runs in my family. My teachers would lead us to visit exhibitions, enter competitions where I learned to appreciate Chinese arts. In my early twenties, I lived in Japan for a few years. I always had an interest in crafts, especially in Japan which is a country rich in culture. I joined the members of Roman Dolls which consists of several levels which have education, exhibition and teaching in making figurines with paper clay on glass bottles or free hands. Painting the faces of the dolls and their clothing took a lot of practice. Vancouver is the first city I lived in when I came to Canada 30 years ago. I studied baking and pastry art at Vancouver Community College, then I worked for a time as a cake decorator at one of the most successful bakeries in town. I transitioned my cake baking and decorating into sourdough breads and gluten free treats. I often participate in Bake Sales at DND for local charities. In recent years I have found peace and joy in painting which I can do easily wherever I go…more importantly, helping charities with my work makes me feel good. I love nature and outdoor activities, exploring the wilderness to watch animals makes my day. Now that I live in Victoria, I have more opportunities to go scuba diving and snorkeling as a member of Vancouver Island Women Underwater. My weekday routine frequently involves swimming laps at one of the local pools. I also volunteer at the forage events with South Vancouver Island Mycological Society. It is a world of exploring edible mushrooms and I find that very exciting. I hope that my paintings convey my passion for animals and nature. Map link in bio.

Happy belated birthday Richard Diebenkorn (1922-1993)! Yesterday we celebrated the life and work of Richard Diebenkorn, a pioneering figure in abstract and figurative representations. In the 1960s, Diebenkorn began his significant and extensive series titled “Ocean Park”, which are immediately recognizable by their unique geometric and lyrical qualities. Deeply influenced by the paintings of Henri Matisse, he continued to explore abstraction, carrying the concepts over to print. Producing woodblocks, lithographs, intaglio prints, and monotypes, Diebenkorn pushed the boundaries of his own practice and left behind an inspiring artistic legacy.
