I was very sad to read in the news about England footballer Ellen White having a punctured lung after receiving acupuncture from a sports physiotherapist a year ago. Acupuncture has repeatedly been shown to be one of the safest forms of medical treatment, which is one of the reasons the government decided against Statutory Regulation for the profession, as the safety record is so good. This is a good time to point out to the public at large the differences in lengths of training between Professional ‘Traditional’ Acupuncturists who do a minimum of 3000 hours (British Acupuncture Council registered practitioners 3500) and those Healthcare practitioners such as Osteopaths, Chiropractors and Physiotherapists who do far less, and use ‘dry needling’ as an addition to their usual modality of treatment. Numerous research studies have shown acupuncture to be a safe and effective treatment. • The largest source of safety data comes from the 2006 German PEP-Ac study, involving 454,920 patients and over 4 million treatments administered through the German healthcare system. 7.9% of patients in this study reported minor adverse effects while only 0.003% (13 patients) experienced severe adverse effects. To put this into context let’s think about acupuncture for pain relief and look at the safety of frequently used pain medication: * Of patients prescribed opioids for pain relief, up to 25% of them go in to develop life-long addiction * In 2015, opioid-involved drug overdoses accounted for 33,091 deaths in the United States (more than deaths due to car accidents) * A recent study of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory use in 446,763 subjects found that taking any dose of Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) for any duration increased the risk of heart attack. When the safety data for acupuncture is compared with the serious side effects of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and opioids and the number of deaths connected with their application, the safety of acupuncture becomes even more apparent. What's the research on the safety of acupuncture during pregnancy? . For the full article plus references, see the Perinatal Acupuncture Research Summaries Project (link in bio) . Acupuncture is appealing during pregnancy in part because it's believed to be safer and less likely to cause side effects than medications or other similar interventions. However, we have to examine this assumption of safety- if acupuncture can provide benefits, surely it also has the potential to cause harm if used improperly. So what does the evidence say? . Two separate systematic reviews (which consolidated the evidence from several individual studies) found that any adverse effects as a result of acupuncture are usually mild and short-lived. Another large study was conducted which looked at the medical records of over 20,000(!) pregnant patients in Korea. It found that acupuncture led to no increased risk of preterm labor or stillbirth. Researchers concluded that acupuncture during pregnancy is a safe therapy for relieving discomfort without adversely affecting the health of the mother or baby. One additional study which I feel is important to mention looked at 593 people having acupuncture during the first trimester- often seen as the most delicate point in pregnancy. These women were having acupuncture to treat nausea and/or vomiting, and no increased risk of adverse events affecting either mother or baby were found. It's also reassuring to see a variety of statements by professional organizations such as ACOG (American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists), RCOG (Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, in the UK) and the Royal College of Midwives in the UK. So this is what I’ve been saying GET ACUPUNCTURE WITH AN ACUPUNCTURIST there are dangers if not trained properly. Obviously, even trained professionals incur problems now and again. However, to cause a pneumothorax (puncture the lung) implies that the needle insertion was probably incorrectly carried out. As a qualified Acupuncturist I have been taught how to needle the chest area safely and correctly to avoid this. Please read the article Note : Luckily she made a full recovery within days, but doctors have stressed that improper practice could lead to life-threatening problems. This is what I’m talking about The doctors said: 'The depth, direction and angle of needle insertion, especially in the chest region, are crucial. The lung surface is about 10–20mm beneath the skin.' We are trained in this : The doctors said: 'Both acupuncturists and clinicians need to be aware of the possibility of adverse events following acupuncture, especially in those who develop symptoms.' The likelihood of this : Although the doctors said incidences such as this are rare, Dr Nick Hopkinson of the British Lung Foundation said there has been at least one fatality reported.
