Kauri Gum Northland Region, New Zealand Holocene (0.0117 - 0 Ma) Weight: 69.7 grams Dimensions: 7.0 x 6.6 x 2.3 centimeters *I am very grateful to @jacobs__rocks for sharing this fine specimen with me. This specimen was part of a group of relatively old stock material that Jacob had received from a friend; his friend had had it and other unpolished pieces in her collection for at least 20 years. The specimen arrived partially sanded, which I finished into a half-polished style; during sanding it constantly emitted an acrid scent, reminiscent of turpentine. The specimen is remarkably similar to Colombian copal in appearance under normal lighting and in its fluorescent response, though its hardness is lower and its scent is radically different due to its chemistry (araucarian vs. detarioid source tree). The image showing the polished side's fluorescence under longwave UV is unedited, and my camera could not accurately record its color, which is less saturated and slightly more blue-red in hue. The most interesting feature of this piece, aside from some botanical inclusions and possible emulsions/congealed resin components, is several natural fractures near the surface: in strong LED light and sunlight, the surrounding material fluoresces a vibrant green. This sort of fluorescence is commonly present beneath the outermost oxidized layer in rough specimens of some ambers (red variety, in particular), or oxidation surrounding inclusions such as leaves. #kaurigum #agathisaustralis #araucaria #fluorescence ence #macrophotography

Most likely popped out of the back end of a Kukupa when it was just a seed. Another lovely is this happy Kauri that came here as a gift, a wildling from a property in the Coromandel, about 17yrs old. Tāne Mahuta, also called “God of the Forest,” is a giant kauri tree (Agathis australis) in the Waipoua Forest of Northland Region, New Zealand. Its age is unknown but is estimated to be between 1,250 and 2,500 years. It is the largest living kauri tree known to stand today. The tree is a remnant of the ancient subtropical rainforest that once grew on the Northland Peninsula. It was discovered and identified in early January 1924 when contractors surveyed the present State Highway 12 route through the forest. The tree is named for Tāne, the Māori god of forests and of birds who was the son of Rangi and Papa, the sky father and earth mother. Some legends say that Tāne made the first man, named Tiki. More widely known is a tradition that Tāne was trying to find himself a wife, but at first he found only non-human females and fathered insects, birds, and plants.

Agathis australis, some kauri seedlings that have sprouted on the water hole track in huia. These two “ embryonic” leaves are made with the energy stores inside of a kauri seed as the seeds aren’t really able to photosynthesise before they put out their first shoot. New leaves on a New Zealand kauri tree over a couple of weeks in spring, starting off ice blue then turning a rusty brown. The tree might look dead to anyone who sees it, but young trees of this species, Agathis australis, are always this colour. Agathis are conifers like pine trees, Cycas and Araucaria, common in Malta. They’re among the tallest trees in the world and this one could grow to a height of 50 metres with a trunk diameter of 5 metres, although that’s unlikely in our harsh climate. Perhaps New Zealand's oldest ANZAC memorial planting, and some of its earliest other World War 1 memorial plantings. Both in my home town (village, really) of Eastbourne, across the harbour from Wellington.
The pohutukawa was one or two, only one of which survives. It's across Oroua Street from my primary school's main gate. I never knew.
I only learnt of these lately, and was fortunate to visit the other day, with my only sister, and friend, Sashi. Cnr. Oroua / Rata Sts., and north side of Nikau Street.

These forest giants were heavily logged for the timber industry and are now facing a kauri dieback disease. We visited Tane Mahuta, Lord of the Forest, estimated to be around 2000 years old and is the largest living kauri. We also visited Te Matua Ngahere, which has the largest girth at 16.41 metres and the twin trunked kauri. Blue suede shoes: spot the kauri, amongst a bit of fir cone fever, Have a wee Elvis thought... 1 - 4. Chuandian Lengshan or Forrest fir, Abies forrestii (syn. A. delavayi var. forrestii, says James Eckenwalder), Pinaceae, SW China (Sichuan, Yunnan and Tibet). Tree to 30(-40)m, cones dark purple when young, maturing purplish-brown. Eckenwalder notes they hybridise with Delavay fir (A.delavayi) & Farges fir (A. fargesii) in the same regions, leading to diversity and confusing folk like me. George Forrest was an intrepid Scots plant collector who made 6 trips to W China in the 1940s, among much else. 5, 6. Couple more pics of Ta Jian Shan or common keteleeria (Keteleeria davidiana, Pinaceae, from Taiwan, China, Vietnam and Laos. Just love it. And these seem to like warmth, growing well in Melbourne and Sydney botanic gardens (& here: at Hoddles Creek) 7, 8. Always a kiwi: New Zealand kauri, Agathis australis, Araucariaceae, Nn. The ancient tree Tāne Mahuta - God of the forest Another long hedged dream of Julia came true: We visited Tāne Mahuta, the holy tree of Māori and yes, a lot of Julia’s dreams are about trees and forests… In Māori legends Tāne is the son of Ranginui who is the sky father and Papatūānuku who is the earth mother. To bring light, space and air upon the world Tāne tore his parents apart, so life could flourish in between. Therefore Tāne is the life giver. All living creatures are his children. Tāne Mahuta is the largest living kauri tree (Agathis australis) in New Zealand. It’s age is estimated up to 2500 years. You couldn’t picture it right, but Tāne Mahuta is 51.5 metres high and has a trunk girth of 15,4 metres! This tree is huge!!! Just nearby stand the second largest kauri tree Te Matua Ngahere, Father of the forest. In awe-stricken silence we watched these giant trees, thinking about the Hometree in Avatar and it's spiritual meaning. Unfortunately in 2018, Tāne Mahuta was considered threatened by a generally fatal disease - kauri dieback - caused by a fungus which has already infected many nearby kauri trees. There is now an extensive protection plan by @docgovtnz We had to pass several disinfecting stations, there is a defined walking pass, several areas are currently restricted, like the 'Three Sisters’, there was a Māori patrolling at the forest of Te Matua Ngahere. And under no, no, no circumstances you walk on the feeding roots, because they are very shallow and delicate. Although giants, they are sensitive mates. Cruz/Solomons), Neijev, Nendu (Vanuatu), Ndakua (Fiji), Melanesian /Pacific kauri, Agathis macrophylla. Tree to 30m (-45m), sporadic distribution across Melanesia's archipeligo. Tallest tree emerging from rainforest, 0 - 900m asl 7 - 8. Winga, kapil or Papuan incense cedar, Papuacedrus papuana, Cupressaceae, Moliccas and Papua New Guinea's C.mountain ranges. Tree to 35m (-50m) in montane rainforests, <10m in subalpine scrub, 600 - 3900m a.s.l., with peeling bark strips. Perhaps the most northerly of the Southern incense cedars (Libocedrus, Austrocedrus, Papuacedrus)... 9 - 10. Kaori Nain, kaori de montagne, dwarf kauri, Agathis ovata, Sn. 1/3 of New Caledonia & outlier on Mt. Menazi near Kouaoua, 65km N. 150 - 1150m a.s.l. Shrub as low as 1m, to small tree 8m (-13m, exceptionally to 25m), scattered in canopy or as widely spaced emergents. Dropped the car off for repairs and headed off for many hours wandering around Kaikohe. Didn't get far when I got all impressed by this BIG Water Gum ( #tristaniopsislaurina ) maturing beautifully in Kiakohe's volcanic soils. That's it second from the left next to a healthy young Kauri ( #agathisaustralis australis ) and getting close to that even bigger Lillipilli ( #syzigiumpaniculatum ).
