Dzisiaj przypada 98 rocznica urodzin Aliny Szapocznikow, dla mnie osobiście jednej z najważniejszych artystek. Pisałam o niej w ostatniej książce. Przytaczam w niej anegdotę o lampie-ustach i Louise Bourgeois, amerykańskiej artystce, którą Alina uwielbiała. Podarowała swoją lampę Louise, w silikonową podstawę zatopiła karteczkę z dedykacją. Ale Bourgeois nigdy nawet tej pracy nie zobaczyła. Lately I’m returning a lot to the incredible life and work of Alina Szapocznikow, one of the pioneering sculptors of figurative abstraction, a Polish holocaust survivor who spent her teenage years between Auschwitz and other concentration camps, finally ending up in Prague after WWII. I think of how she processed memory and exorcised trauma through these sculptures, her own body being the subject of the pieces. The works she made during her short life (she succumbed to cancer in her late forties) hold such contemporary resonance. Sculptor’s drawings are often, if not always, remarkable (Rodin, Moore, Szapocznikow, Cragg, Gormley,…), as this sublime work by David Smith reminds us. It was only on the occasion of “David Smith, The drawings”, at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1979, that nearly 140 drawings bringing together all the styles of his production were shown. I love this work intensely because it is unique, due to its technique and its composition, and because it requires long contemplation. It doesn’t deliver straight away, it keeps its mystery for a long time. International Women’s Day 2024 For the past few years on International Women’s Day I have posted a photo of me wearing a t-shirt that I made inspired by @artgirlrising who make t-shirts to promote artists who are women. I made this t-shirt to celebrate Jewish women artists and placed myself on the list. These are only a few of the MANY amazing Jewish women artists past and present I could have chosen. Ida Applebrug, Lee Krasner, Carolee Schneeman, Miriam Cahn, Barbra Kruger, Claude Cahun, Charlotte Salomon, Chantal Ackerman, Martha Rosler are just some other examples and I could go on. I initially made this t-shirt to help me feel proud of my identity as a strong and proud Jewish woman artist and I pride myself to be in the company of these artists and remember their incredible contributions to the art world. At a time when antisemitism has exploded and I have become very quiet about my identity through fear, this feels more important than ever. International Women’s Day is a day to celebrate ALL women, whatever shape, ethnicity, colour, gender, age, nationality and religion. I only hope that by next year there will be PEACE and no more tragic loss of innocent lives and an end to violence against ALL Women and girls. A few images from the exhibition ‘Multiple Realities: Experimental Art in the Eastern Bloc, 1960s–1980s’ @walkerartcenter, curated by @pavelpys. There is so much great work, and conversations between works. The focus is experimental art made in East Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania and Yugoslavia during the 1960s to 1980s. The first image is Eva Kmentová’s ‘Human Egg’ from 1968 Alina Szapocznikow’s ‘Cohesive’ from 1968, made from polyurethane Then Karpo Godina’s ‘Fried Brains of Pupilija Ferkeverk’ from 1970 Vladimir Bonačić’s ‘GF, E 32 NS’ from 1969-70 - what he called a ‘dynamic object’ that is formed of over a thousand light bulb pixels. Come by today or tomorrow for the last chance to see our current group exhibition ‘Non-Specific Objects’, on view at Capitain Petzel. In focus is the abstracted body, and the the selection of works on view collectively embodies the contemporary lived experience of those who occupy spaces outside the normative. While they often do not overtly mirror the human form, the works represent humanity through a lens of abstraction and resistance, inviting viewers to confront themselves and experience bodily otherness. From alienation and embarrassment to intimacy and desire, the artists offer both the possibility of self-reflection and shared moments of humor. Exhibition Multiple Realities: Experimental Art in the Eastern Bloc, 1960s–1980s Walker Art Center Minneapolis, US 11.11.2023 – 10.03.2024 Curators: Pavel Pyś (@pavelpys) with William Hernández Luege and Laurel Rand-Lewis This exhibition offers a sweeping survey of experimental art made in six Central Eastern European nations during the 1960s to 1980s. W weekend zobaczyłam „Nowoczesność reglamentowana. Modernizm w PRL” w @thenationalmuseuminkrakow - gorąco polecam! To obszerna wystawa opowiedziana z perspektywy wielu dziedzin artystycznych. Także skala emocji jest rozległa i ewoluuje z kierunkiem zwiedzania: od przytłoczenia wątkami wojennymi po śmiech z absurdów l.80’. Będę musiała na nią wrócić, bo dla mnie jej psychiczne doświadczanie ulokowało się w jednym dziele - „Trudny wiek” A. Szapocznikow. Nie jestem typem nostalgicznym, już sama historia sztuki wymusza ciągłe migracje do przeszłości, dlatego wolę patrzeć przed siebie. Ale kontakt z tą rzeźbą był jak użądlenie przez poczucie nieodwracalności. Patrzyłam na biodra z brązu i chciało mi się płakać. Wytłumaczyłam sobie, że to projekcja bólu artystki, że wiecznie nastoletnia miednica jest kontenerem jej niemocy biologicznego macierzyństwa. Pojemnym, bo odnalazłam tam również własny żal za brakiem świadomości ciała w tamtym okresie i niemożnością powtórnego przeżycia tego etapu z uważnością. Pomyślałam też o 14-letniej balerinie E. Degasa, o jego słuszności wykonania pierwowzoru w nietrwałym wosku. Różnice między rzeźbami tkwiły nie tylko w materiale: nastoletność XIX-wiecznych baletnic z paryskiej opery była jeszcze trudniejsza. Dojrzali mężczyżni na pastelach Degasa nie podziwiają młodziutkich tancerek dla ich umiejętności tanecznych, co gorsza towarzyszące im matki także nie przyszły kibicować córkom, a doglądać interesu. Może stąd rzeźba Szapocznikow jest tak dojmująca, bo patrząc wstecz trudno doszukać się wieku, który nie byłby dla kobiet trudny. Więc tym bardziej pozostanę przy swojej filozofii - to co najlepsze dopiero przed nami! Huge congratulations Emma Ridgway @emmajridgway - it’s a beautiful and poignant exhibition. Wonderful to see all of the works in the show, and a particular treat for me to find the paintings of Maria Lassnig whose works I first experienced in person at her incredible retrospective in Cologne, 2009. ALINA SZAPOCZNIKOW is part of the exhibition ‘Non-Specific Objects’, on view at Capitain Petzel through February 24, 2024. The Polish sculptor Alina Szapocznikow devoted her career to representations of the human body. Born in 1926 and active throughout the mid-20th century, Szapocznikow used resin, polyester, polyurethane and various other media to construct fragmented, macabre depictions of the human form. Her work is characterized by a unique and innovative approach to the representation of the body, incorporating themes of transformation and elements of surrealism to illustrate the fleeting and ephemeral nature of existence. Often linking her work to autobiographical experience, Szapocznikow was an astute observer of the paradigm shifts in Post-War Polish society, who also drew on her own struggles with illness. On view in this exhibition is what can be seen as Szapocznikow’s raw material — two intricate drawings that illustrate her varied process. Michel Rein is pleased to present the group show Alter ego with the artists Jordi Colomer, Stefan Nikolaev, Anne-Marie Schneider, Franck Scurti, Marinella Senatore, Lucy Skaer, Alina Szapocznikow, Agnès Thurnauer. Each of the artists brings his or her singular voice to the exploration of otherness. The works on show embody the ardent desire to reunite what has been scattered, to rebuild links between individuals scattered by the loss of collective reference points. Artists become the actors of a rediscovered connection, a restored cohesion. Through painting, sculpture, drawing and photography, they illustrate the imperative need to restore social bonds, to reconnect with a common humanity. ___
