Lately I’m returning a lot to the incredible life and work of Alina Szapocznikow, one of the pioneering sculptors of figurative abstraction, a Polish holocaust survivor who spent her teenage years between Auschwitz and other concentration camps, finally ending up in Prague after WWII. I think of how she processed memory and exorcised trauma through these sculptures, her own body being the subject of the pieces. The works she made during her short life (she succumbed to cancer in her late forties) hold such contemporary resonance. Sifaka Lemur, endemic to Madagascar is known for its upright posture side-hop moving technique. Thanks to their long and strong hind legs they can leap long distances between trees and side-hop when on the ground. Sifakas eat leaves, flowers and fruits. Their only natural predator is Fossa. Due to deforestation/shrinking of their natural habitat their wild population continues to decline. The only hope for this endangered species is conservation.
