It’s funny how many different sounds the night holds when you need it to be dead quiet. Hi all. I continue my notes of a sound engineer. Often when working with songs, you get the feeling that different elements sound separated from each other. For myself, I found a way to solve this problem - the everything reverb. Whatever spatial processing is on the tracks and groups, I create a separate reverb send to which I send absolutely all sounding elements. The level of this channel is quite low, but it's enough to bring all the elements of the mix together and kinda gel them. Jérôme Jamsin, who lives in the north of Paris and paid me a visit on his back home from a gig. Both S22 models were built by George in 1978 and came out of the same workshop that same year. Their sound is very close, their look almost the same, except that my Old Lady had a cut away and went through widening of the fretboard some year later in order to get more spacing between the strings to allow for more comfort for the right hand. Pierre Müller, a well documented Lowden specialist, told us that 143 S22 only were built, among them a few "experimental" guitars (like mine). Pierre has spotted about 20 of them, the others are somewhere in the wilderness. When you see the price of the recent "Masterbuilt" Lowden Lutheir series (above 20K£), (although they are not entirely built by George himself!, no doubt the survivors of the first 143 will reach the stars... We were able to compare their sound and also played my two more recent Signature models with equal extraordinary qualities. What a jubilating treat it was! My song “Into the Dark” is out now on Spotify. https://spotify.link/aO0JvZtT6Db It’s a classical composition that I wrote and recorded on my 1900 C. Bechstein Model V. This piano was originally sent from where it was made in Germany to the C. Bechstein store in London. The London store was next door to Bechstein Hall which is now famously known as Wigmore Hall. It was used as a venue to showcase their pianos and has had countless iconic performances from some of the best musicians in the world on some of the best instruments ever made. I recorded this song in my studio in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. During the mixing of this song I was able to use a program that uses an impulse response of a room to replicate exactly what something sounds like inside that room. It’s called a convolution reverb and the specific program I used is called Altiverb. It’s made by the company Audio Ease and is my favorite convolution reverb plugin. They just so happen to have an impulse response of Wigmore Hall and so I used that to replicate what this piece would have sounded like performed in Wigmore Hall. I will attach a link in the comments to the Wigmore Hall history page on their website incase anyone is interested in reading more about it. One set-up I use to capture reverb impulse responses out in remote places (a graffiti-tagged abandoned building in this case). I fire up a powered speaker with a small 12v battery and inverter. I use a @tascam_official DR-100mkiii to playback the IR sweep tone through the amp. Then use the new TASCAM Portacapture8x to capture the results. I wrote this song inspired by this passage from the Dao De Jing. I started by playing the Native American flute. I then added each part with a focus on not thinking about it. No wrong notes. No wrong timing. Using convolution reverb I’ve put all the instruments in the King’s Chamber of the Great Pyramid of Giza to achieve the long reverb. Für sie »offenbart sich Hagia Sophias mystische Brillanz nur dann vollständig, wenn sie als Gefäß für animiertes Licht - und Ton - angesehen wird«.
