Today I had the wonderful opportunity to take #uahmusictechnology students to a real #anechoicchamber and #echochamber here at the #universityofalabamahuntsville tech hall! Dr Kader Frendi graciously allowed us to tour the two chambers, which are used to study and develop soundproofing materials for aircraft, and to harness the potential power and energy of sound waves. As an experiment, one of our music students brought his French horn, to demonstrate the difference in sound we hear in the two rooms, and to differentiate direct sound vs early reflection in how we perceive instruments. #acoustics Also we have been collecting audio samples #irfiles to develop #convolutionreverb from various places on campus, so we of course had to capture one in the echo chamber! #여우락페스티벌 #박우재 #박지하 #포박사실 #육박십분 #convolutionreverb #문화비축기지 여우락페스티벌 리허설에 있던 일이다 박우재 거문고 연주자님이 ‘육박십분’이라는 곡을 연주 전에 “감독님 12초 짜리 긴 리버브 걸어주세요.” “저희를 상암동에 데려다 주세요.” 무슨 말인지 궁금해 하던 찰라 리서칭을 해봤더니 ‘육박십분’ 이라는 곡은 상암 문화비축기지 T4에서 작곡했다라는 것이다. 나는 그런 이야기를 듣고 뭔가 모르게 참을 수가 없었다 그 곳에 가서 측정용 총을 쏘던 측정 사인쓰윕을 쏘던 IR을 따가지고 와야 직성이 풀릴것 같았다 난 그 공간에 가서 공간에 대한 음향정보를 받아와 연주자며 감상하는 관객이며 그리고 만들어내는 나에게며 진실된 공간을 표현해내고 싶었다. 결국 공연당일, 점심시간에 우리 직원 이한누리 음향감독과 내 개인 측정장비를 바리 바리 싸들고 가서 상암 비축기지에 일하는 후배감독님을 괴롭히고 공간 IR을 만들어내고 그 곡<육박십분> 프로그램도 실제 그 T4 공간으로 시뮬레이션해서 좋은 평으로 공연을 마무리했다. 다채널 Measure Point와 다채널 입체음향 포맷으로 다채널IR 을 만들 수 있었음에도 짧은 준비기간이 넘 아쉽다. 즉흥적으로 했으니… (2020년 본인 페북 글 발췌)

Made a Playstation 1-era cover for a downtempo track I recently composed called FORGOTTEN CITY It was inspired by survival horror games from my childhood like Parasite Eve and Silent Hill, and the composers Yoko Shimomura and Akira Yamaoka, respectively. I still enjoy the feeling of industrial dread mixed with urban melancholia that games from that era carry. The music was never bombastic and it never told you what you had to feel, but it always managed to supply the right ambience to what the player was up against. Les Premières Réflexions (Clermont-Ferrand) 2023 « Clermont-Ferrand » est la troisième série de pédales de la collection « Les Premières Réflexions ». Les pédales archivent les réverbérations de trois espaces à la Muraille de Chine, grand ensemble long de 320 mètres, construit en 1961 sur le plateau du quartier Saint-Jacques : un passage couvert, une cage d'escalier ainsi que l'appartement de Danielle dernière locataire du 16 rue Henry Andraud. Attentive aux traces laissées par les habitants de la Grande Muraille, Evelise Millet rejoue ici certaines surfaces observées dans le lieu. Sur le terrain, elle photographie des tags réalisés au briquet, des inscriptions sur une façade ou des posters aux couleurs passées dans un appartement encore habité. Derrière le bâtiment, une poignée de gravats est prélevée, triée puis tamisée afin d’en établir une classification presque archéologique. La matière tamisée révèle des fragments hétérogènes de murs colorés, débris de plastique et lambeaux de tapisserie, vestiges d’une époque contemporaine. Utilising reamping of her voice recorded at @voxtonstudio in Berlin through a pair of Barefoot MM27s, I laid out a collection of 16 microphones in various pairs and configurations to offer a palette of colours and perspectives for use in the mix by Marta. In addition this allowed us the wonderful opportunity to create a collection of pin-drop impulse responses of the space for historical safekeeping. The result was a realism that no FX unit could offer, as well as a beautiful day of sonic exploration with beautiful people. Aura is out now on Erased Tapes, ERATP152.
