The wetland section of this trail isn’t very long but I feel like there’s always so much to see. In the past I’ve seen snakes on the boardwalk that go plopping back in the water when people pass by. On this day there were tons of small birds zipping over the water and even a few frogs. I’ve come to really appreciate lowland trails with boardwalks. It rains on average about 150 days a year here and the mountains are covered in snow until late June most years. During the rainy spring these boardwalks are the best option for getting outside without being ankle deep in mud. The Clear Creek trail system in Silverdale, WA is a series of interconnected urban trails that run throughout the town. I found this wetlands section late last year and I was excited to come back and hike this section again. Story behind the photo (04/27/2024). I accidentally met an angler who just caught that big carp from Green Lake. I asked him if it was okay to take a photo of his activity from the closer distance and he was fine with that. In addition to that, I had a little chat with him and it turned out he is Russian and has an old Slavic name, it's Vladislav (translation: famous). The funny thing was he tried to sell one of his fishes (he had a couple more in the water). 😅 That was politely declined. Amazed that they can find what they need to grow on a (potentially) nitrogen-poor substrate. Followed a four-week progression of the archegonia on this striking Snake liverwort (Conocephalum conicum). Loving wet environments, this one trailed along stones in the splash zone of a stream. The short-lived archegonia resemble tiny mushrooms with their conical heads (Conocephalum means conehead) and extend upward on a little stalk as they mature. But it's not just these reproductive structures that catch your attention. Look at that texture on the shiny thallus.
