I always read the story Anzac Ted to my class. I find that the kids are able to make connections because he is a teddy bear 🧸 and there are always lovely conversations generated after reading Anzac Ted. I usually incorporate art with Anzac Ted. There are a variety of directed drawings available online including @mrs_strawberry_1 but this year I used a video on YouTube, it was just someone drawing with no instruction given. We watched the video through and then rewatched pausing and taking time to draw. So impressed with the quality of the drawings my Grade 1’s and 2’s created. April 25th is ANZAC Day, a day where we commemorate and remember the service of all Australians in military operations. It’s a conflicting day for me personally as I have a grandparent and great grandparent who served and a great great uncle who died in WW1 who we honour today as my children participate in our community remembrance march. And yet the bastions of colonialism wrapped up in war and the huge loss of life can’t be ignored. So for me it’s a day of reflection and remembrance. Here’s a new release picture book and an anniversary edition to read to children at home and in classrooms which sensitively discusses the topic of war. The Hidden Hat by Phil Cummings & Jennifer Goldsmith Lucy and Mitch are playing hide and seek at Grandpa’s house when they find Grandpa’s hat. A hat filled with memories. This is a thoughtfully produced picture book which parallels the hide and seek play of children with soldiers camouflaged in the dense foliage in Vietnam. Many children may have a grandparent who served in the Vietnam War so it’s provides representation for a generation of conscripted soldiers who weren’t celebrated upon their return. Anzac Ted 10th Anniversary Edition by Belinda Landsberry A battered and bruised teddy bear is brought for classroom show and tell which the class view on face value, not realising its special history. It belonged to Grandpa Jack, who enlisted when he was 21yrs old. His Grandma gave him a teddy to take for luck to bring him home to his wife and baby. He comes home bearing scars just like every returned service person. In rhyming text this is an excellent book for young children to understand Anzac Day with information in the back and this new edition includes a QR code with an outline for children to create their own Anzac Ted drawing. We have been learning about celebrations in HASS and last week explored the differences between celebrations and commemoration in the lead up to ANZAC day. Students engaged with the text ANZAC Ted, a guided drawing experience and a guided writing task. Each group provided sentences, one was selected per group. Students were supported to use sound cards, say the sounds to write the word and to apply sentence elements. ANZAC Ted 🧸 ANZAC Day is a very special day in our family and something we celebrate each year. When @the_craftymumma brought out this ANZAC Ted set that included a Ted story spoon and nine ANZAC themed story stones, I just had to purchase a set. Unfortunately I couldn't get my hands on the ANZAC Ted book, but I still made this sensory bin for Keegan using green split peas. Keegan thoroughly enjoyed playing with this one. Ted the story spoon was used right away for mixing, story telling and was even fed the split peas. In preparation for ANZAC day this week we read Anzac Ted. It was a great Segway from our History unit of toys from the past. Students discussed how things changed as they aged. The questions that resulted from the vocab in the text were also fabulous. Students had questions like “what does ‘disguise mean?” And “how far is Africa from Greece?” After drawing a picture of Anzac Ted I modelled how to write a letter to him to find out more information.
