I was looking around old historic website as I am inclined to do and found this image of the Don Lee Cadillac & LaSalle Dealership in Pasadena California. What a great piece of Mediterranean/deco architecture. You might recognize the building as the home of @jacobmaarse on the corner of Green Street and El Molino Ave. At some point (probably after an earthquake) the finials were taken down which is understandable. Perhaps the finials could be replaced someday with a low weight composite material. 📍 Great Barrington, St Mary, Gloucestershire . 🖋 A lovely Cotswold church, St Mary’s is a Norman foundation which was largely rebuilt in the early Tudor period. Originally built in the 12th century, the best surviving Romanesque feature of the building is the beautifully carved chancel arch. In the late 15th and early 16th century the majority of the church was rebuilt in the Perpendicular style. There are a number of interesting monuments here. Now stuck behind the organ is the effigy of St Edmund Bray d. 1620. Though it’s Jacobean, the ruff makes his dress look much more Tudor. I’m no expert on 17th century dress, but I wonder if this was a case of an effigy carved within his lifetime, maybe many years before he died? At the back of the church is the stunning but poignant 18th century memorial to Jane and Edward Bray. They were the children of Edmund and Frances Bray of Great Barrington Manor, which stands near the church. Jane died aged 7 of smallpox in 1711, and her brother Edmund contracted the same disease in 1720, dying at the age 14. The children are depicted here holding the hands of an angel leading them through the clouds. Where is this church? 📍Kirkharle, St Wilfrid, Northumberland . 🖋 After a lovely weekend church crawling in a fabulous area close to Hadrian’s Wall, I thought I’d share my favourite church from this part of Northumberland. Standing in a picturesque, windswept spot, a church was first recorded at Kirkharle in 1165. There may have been an even earlier church here, but the current building dates from around 1336. It’s a gorgeous example of a Decorated church with a stunning set of plain glass windows. Some of the tracery here is from the 1884 restoration but it’s very faithful to the period. The porch and bellcote were added in 1731 by Sir William Loraine. The Loraine family installed much of the interior woodwork, including the hammerbeam ceilings. There’s a couple of medieval graveslabs in the chancel too. The font looks slightly out of place and originally came from All Saints church in Newcastle. Dating from the 15th century, the shields are of notable Newcastle families. The font was purchased from the Loraine family for the churches in 1836. It had left All Saints when the medieval church was demolished in 1786 and was being used as a garden ornament! This font is therefore not the one that baptised Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown in 1716. He was born in Kirkharle and christened in this church. Where is this church? 📍Ancroft, St Anne, Northumberland . 🖋 I’m off church crawling for a couple of days in Northumberland, so here’s a look at a great church from this neck of the woods. The stoic church at Ancroft was built by the monks of Lindisfarne after the Priory was re-established in 1083. The west wall and south west end of the nave, including the blocked doorway, date from that time. As a church in the borderlands, Ancroft suffered its share of raids. In the late 13th century, a pele tower was built on the west end of the church to ‘provide protection for the villagers during the inroads of the Scots and a residence for a curate’. I’m sure the curate loved sharing! The Scottish raids did have a big impact though and Ancroft suffered population decrease in the mid 14th century. The church was restored in 1870 by FR Wilson. The work included extending the nave to the east and rebuilding the chancel, all in the neo-Romanesque style. Where is this church? Appreciation Post Today I take a moment to say thank you to all who have kindly donated to Streetfeed in the past week - the volume of items donated is a testament to how well we strive to care for one another❤️ Needless to say, within moments of placing the sleeping bags and warm clothes out in the tables they were gone - such is the demand for anything to help stay warm during the coming months ❄️ Arriving early last night in an effort to beat the peak hour traffic provided the perfect opportunity to enjoy some quiet contemplation inside our host location in detail: the magnificent 155 year old All Saints Church in the city⛪ I had planned on just sitting in the car until others arrived, instead seeing the door open I made myself at home😉 The amazingly chilled serving clergyman Fr. Duncan didn't mind my presence at all - after all he's a fellow biker and Christian so we always have plenty to chat about... That's his ride parked out front. Whilst I have known Duncan for 18 months now since his arrival from Ireland, we are yet to find a day where we are both free to take a ride somewhere mountainous and twisty... I have weekends free, for some reason he rarely does😂 The usual 100 hot meals and 100 sandwiches made by our amazing Sandy were all gone by 6:15pm!
