Pitchfork says... - 24/30 🇬🇧: lettere dedicate alla grande mela Quando nel 1998 PJ Harvey venne chiamata dal regista Hal Hartley, lei dovette partire per New York. Il motivo? La voleva nel suo film The Book Of Life (film che non conosco e non so se ha un ruolo rilevante oppure una comparsa). Durante la permanenza a NYC rimase affascinata dallo stile di vita e dalla movida che la gente aveva in quella grande città e in tutti i locali esistenti, tanto che ebbe tante ispirazioni per scrivere delle canzoni. New York continua ad essere ispirazione per gli artisti, anche se lei precisa che l'album "non è dedicato alla città, ma si è sentita ispirata e basta". E fu così che nel 2000 Polly Jean pubblicò il suo quinto album Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea. Rispetto ai suoi precedenti album, Polly voleva che sonicamente fosse molto "crudo e diretto", usando riff e produzioni più pesanti e meno "pop" rispetto ai precedenti due album ma rimanendo esteticamente sempre accessibile e piacevole al pubblico. Quanto a livello tematico, racconta i sentimenti della nostalgia e della distanza da casa così come creare dei parallelismi con le relazioni a distanza e la rabbia di un tradimento amoroso. È un album DI-VI-NO! Io l'ho ascoltato come perditempo perchè quel giorno dovevo andare in ospedale per una visita medica, e dato che il tragitto era di un'ora e avevo del tempo da perdere, io ero partito dal presupposto di ascoltare un buon album rock. E INVECE NO! Le canzoni emanano quella carica che vanno dal dolore alla rabbia, dall'esasperazione alla frustrazione e il tutto non stanca. E poi le due collaborazioni con Thom Yorke sono fatte benissimo, perchè non risultano fuorvianti e mantengono alta la linea tematica che si sta ascoltando. Un paio di tracce non mi hanno convinto perchè avrei voluto quel qualcosa in più che sentivo nelle tracce precedenti, però le eviterei solo se le ascoltassi singolarmente, perchè nell'insieme COL CAZZO che le skippo! È un album bellissimo, e avrei dovuto ascoltarlo tanto tempo fa Voto: 8½

Qualche giorno fa, a spasso per un museo straordinario, a migliaia di km dall'Italia, ritrovare una certa aria di famiglia. Raffaello e i suoi volti iperuranei, Mantegna capace di scolpire con l'olio, restando tutto veneto e antico romano e mai fiammingo, come invece leggero e pieno di aria di fine inverno era suo cognato Bellini. Mi sono soffermata a lungo sulle pieghe gialle di Giuseppe, per una volta protagonista per stile, e sul paesaggio tutto dipinto e non disegnato, dietro una tenda. Ma soprattutto sulla pala di Raffaello, su un dettaglio. Su un'ombra. Quella del santo in primo piano. In un'atmosfera senza tempo, accediamo ad una manifestazione del sacro, una visione di un reale che sembra tangibile, anche se sovrannaturale. Ed è proprio quell'ombra, quell'umanissimo segno di pesantezza e densità, il segno di un corpo tra noi e il divino, accesa da una luce quasi teatrale, se non fosse che siamo inevitabilmente in Italia. Forse l'unica vera ombra presente in una sacra conversazione in una pala d'altare del Rinascimento.
