A few varieties of the 20 dozen roses (240+) I've cut in the last couple of weeks. I've really enjoyed cutting them with my 2 year daughter for her Mom this Spring. She smells every single rose, has some favorites, and prefers to pick out her own for her room. It has become our daily Daddy/Daughter afternoon routine and a chore that's cherished by this Dad. Compost update! This 3-bay composter was completed in November. We kicked things off with more than 100 leftover holiday decorating pumpkins from the neighborhood. I expanded my community composting service from two households to six. We had one animal incursion in December and shored up our defenses. For most of April, I've been thinking it's full and I'll have to move on to the second bay, but the stack keeps surprising me by settling enough to keep going. But this time I think it's really it... Ready for a barefoot-in-the-garden, sunburned, homegrown, homemade, soil-to-fork kind of summer 🌻 Also kind of felt like time for an intro post after like four years... Hi! I’m Meaghan - avid gardener, homebaker, novice food preserver - basically interested in all the homestead-y skills without the scary, fearmongering, anti-society aspects. I don’t believe you should have to do it all on your own. I believe humans are meant to thrive in community, not out of it. But we thrive in community with people, animals and plants. So too does community go all the way down to pollinators like carpenter bees and monarchs and funghi like the mycorrhizae that improve soil health. I believe we have a deep need to stick our hands in the dirt — to find our way back to the garden, nourishing our bodies and our souls. If you feel the same, I’d love to be friends! A few fun facts about me while we’re at it — 1. I have a PhD in 17th-century English literature that I use to annoy the people around me by being very very good at scrabble. 2. I’m an active-duty military spouse, so I’m particularly interested in gardening and homesteading and homemaking in frugal, rental-friendly ways. 3. My two garden goals this year are to make as homegrown/homemade of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich as I can — which means growing the peanuts, making the sourdough bread, and canning the jam — and just getting better/more comfortable at canning and preserving in general. 4. I’m currently mom to two critters, but we’re expecting our first human baby this fall! Follow @meaghangrows for accessible gardening homesteading tips for how we make do in a rental military base house 🌱🍅🥖 #garden #gardener #gardening #urbangarden #urbangardening #zone8 #zone8a #northcarolinagardening #ncgardener #backyardgarden #organicgardening #veggiegarden #growfoodnotlawns #urbanhomestead #urbanhomesteading #heirloomgarden #openpolllinated #humanswhogrowfood #realfoodmovement #beginnergardener #gardenersofinstagram #grownfromseed #southerngarden #gardenersofig #gardentotable #growyourownfood #eatwhatyougrow #companionplanting #milso #milsolife

This has been a great year for Iris blooms, and we’re especially excited about this one, which we transplanted from our former home. Even in its first year in our new garden, it’s been prolific, putting out these 10 blooms, with more on the way. With its pastel lavender standards and its deep purple falls, we’re not sure of its cultivar. Can anyone help us identify it? #iris #irisflowers #purpleiris #irisidentification #whatisthisiris #chapelhill #zone8a #chapelhillgardenclub

Dahlia season is just around the corner ✨ First year, I grew seedling. No expectation - of them or myself. So fun. So productive. Year 2 - I dove into tubers. Lots of expectations - of them and myself. Overwintering was so-so. Some made it, some didn’t. Year 3 - pulled back on tubers, and dahlias all together. Just had fun with zinnias (until the deer pressure ensued and mowed them to the ground). Year 4 - I’m back in. Purchased a few tubers and a packet of floret seedlings. Cautiously optimistic. The floret seedlings are growing in vigorously. Current plan for overwintering - I’m going to let nature do the hard part. I was digging and dividing in the fall to multiply and then overwintering. But maybe the better path is digging, dividing, and planting all in spring. To be continued….. #flowers #flowerfarmer #cutflower #cutflowers #cutflowerfarmer #farmerflorist #localgrown #locallygrown #locallygrownflowers #localgrownflowers #microflowerfarm #microfarm #farmsmall #farmsmart #farmsmallfarmsmart #flowers #flowersmakemehappy #mariettasquare #mariettaga #marietta #sustainableflowers #Georgiagardening #Georgiagardener #Georgiagarden #zone7b #zone8a #dahlia #grownnotflown #dahliaseason

Trying to finally get some summer crops out in the garden today. We are way behind due to life and its responsibilities as well as our big plant sale we do every year. I planted my personal tomatoes in my @epicgardening 4 cell trays which air prune and keep the roots healthy and prevent them from getting rootbound. This is great for us because we always get behind with planting, and other pots result in less healthy seedlings because of the roots getting all wrapped up at the bottom. These were never potted up and have been in the same spot since I planted them. Look how great the roots are! I need to upgrade to the 4" deep cells from these 3" deep ones since this is going to be the way I go moving forward for myself. No potting up. Way less maintenance. And no rush. Can't ask for better seedlings to transplant!

Air layering keeps our #camellialovers busy in April and May here in #zone8a. We held an air layering workshop for members earlier this month; they learned this simple technique to propagate from a favorite variety. These camellias will be potted up this fall; after 1 to 2 years of growth they’re ready to plant. Thanks to Club president Steve Bott and member Shwu-Ying Hunt for your photos! Already a big camellia collector, or just starting your obsession? Join us! Membership is free in 2024, our form link is in our bio ⬆️ Air layering steps are: 1. Completely remove a ring of bark (the cambium) from the branch you want to ‘turn’ into a new plant. The ring should be 2 or 2.5 times as wide as the diameter of the branch. 2. Dust the exposed surface with a rooting hormone powder. 3. Wet a ball of sphagnum moss and cover the cut evenly. Wring out excess moisture. 4. Use twist ties to secure the moss with a piece of plastic wrap. 5. Shape aluminum foil around the plastic wrapped ball to discourage birds from pecking. During heavy rainfall, it helps to remove some of the water by gently squeezing the ball.

I have this rose that has stood up to some pretty harsh conditions. For years I didn’t even know it was there. It was shaded by trees and didn’t grow well. At one time, I thought I moved it. And killed it. Then, said tree was removed by neighbors and the rose showed up again. So apparently I didn’t dig it all up. Who knows? I know nothing about roses. Now, a cherry tree sapling it’s growing right next to it, and this rose is doing its best to keep on trucking! So, now, I am going to move it. To a place where it can roam free. I know it’s thorny as hell and is a climber. And that’s about it. So if anyone has suggestions about the best time to move it, and how to do so, I’m all ears!

I remember my first year having a real flower garden I heard in a podcast that perennials would sleep their first year, creep their second year, and leap their third year. This is my 3rd year and the plants are definitely leaping! This Coreopsis was a rescue plant from the Lowes clearance rack. With some extra watering and attention it has survived and is doing great. The bees and butterflies love the flowers and they add a cheery pop of color to bouquets. 💛 (I just got the soaker hoses laid out and need to cover them and yes that is a rubber snake in the background to hopefully scare off all the chipmunks and squirrels that have been digging in this garden bed.). #coreopsis #notillgardening #pollinatorgarden #cutflowers #zone8a #kennesaw #ladybughillgarden #flowerfarmerwannabe

Happy Saturday, everyone! It’s a beautiful day in my area. Perfect for gardening… but unfortunately, I have put myself on gardening punishment today lol. I’m focusing on cleaning my house today (Boooo 👎🏽) so I’ll be indoors. But, I had to at least snap a couple pictures of my potatoes. They are coming along nicely and the first bag I planted has really taken off. Time to hill up all the bags. Potato foliage is some of my favorite, it’s so pretty. 🥔 Varieties: Adirondack Blue and Yukon gold. I hope the rest of you are enjoying some time outside gardening and not on lockdown like me 😂. I’m back at it tomorrow though! See you then! 💚
