🌱One of the first spring herbs, you probably recognise this common garden weed as sticky weed (or sticky willie, or goosegrass, depending on where you come from). Also known as cleavers (Galium aparine), wherever you’re from, its primary use is obviously to stick to the back of school jumpers! 🌱There is however another use for it – in herbal medicine. Cleavers is what we call a lymphatic herb – it improves movement and drainage in the lymphatic system (part of the immune system). It is also a diuretic (increases urinary output and so aids the removal of waste products). These actions mean that it is used when we want to flush something out of the body – this could be an infection of some sort or excess fluid. I often use it in skin conditions such as acne, eczema, or psoriasis – as it helps clear waste products from the body rather than have them accumulate in the skin. Last but certainly not least, cleavers is used in lymphoedema to clear swelling and excess fluid, or in any other condition affecting the lymph nodes. 🌱Cleavers tends to be prescribed as a tincture or tea by herbalists. However, you can benefit by picking (always use a reputable plant ID source, use the younger leaves and watch out for where dogs might have “enhanced” it) and juicing it – either drink a small shot on its own for a very green juice or add to your normal juices or smoothies. You could make a cold infusion – mash a handful up a bit, add lemon and cold water and leave in the fridge overnight – once strained it makes a good drink for first thing in the morning (thanks to the Herbal Apothecary). PAIR WITH 🌳 West himalayan birch (Betula utilis subsp. jacquemontii) Sought-after for their white bark, the colour of which develops fully when the tree is around 8 years old, and their dark green leaves that turn butter yellow in autumn. As well as snowdrops and camellias we have a few other delights for February in our Walled Garden Nursery. Meet 'Ribes laurifolium', a firm favorite of mine. A fantastic early evergreen shrub with drooping clusters of pale lime green and white flowers very early from February through to April above large, dark green leaves. This shrub is compact and looks wonderful trained against a wall or fence or is useful ground cover for a semi-shaded sheltered position in the garden. Contrasts beautifully when planted with a red hellebore. Fantastic as an early source of nectar for bees. Happy Sunday ! ☀ ... It's beautiful here in Shropshire today , I hope it is wherever You are ☀ . Here are some of the gorgeous Ashwoods Hybrid Hellebores that my Client purchased a couple of year's back from @ashwoodnurseries , aren't they just so beautiful . I also promised you Sarcococca , so here are some pics of the wonderful cultivar S. hookeriana var. digyna 'Purple Stem' , which also has a dark-pink base to her amazingly scented flowers ; no wonder she's also known as 'Sweet Box'. My Client made a lovely vase arrangement of just one Hellebore stem surrounded by Sarcococca stems , sorry I didn't grab a photo. The Sarcococca is a great winter foliage plant for cutting , the Hellebores are best left until they are running to seed. Planty bits from around and about this week, happy Sunday everyone! 1, Abeliophyllum distichum flowering this week. Commonly known as ‘white forsythia’ the flowers are short lived on an otherwise rather messy shrub but in my opinion it’s worth it when you see the white flowers on the dark stems 2, Cornus officinalis, the Japanese cornelian cherry in full flower. My Winter Sweet have popped open . This is what I wrote about them a few years ago in a Guide To Winter Plants that I created and which never got published. : "Chimonanthus praecox. It makes a thickety strong clump up to 4 foot high. It’s dull as a boiled codfish all summer but it is the king of the winter shrubs. Its mysterious bowl- like clouded flowers appear on leafless stems in January accompanied by a sweet-sour lemony scent. I think it is best trained into a stilted shrub with three or four main stems otherwise it gets to be a tangly mess. There is an improved form called ‘Grandiflorus’ which is the one to get. It has larger pale yellow flowers with large purply anthers and carries a spicy cinnamon scent and there is also a desirable fully yellow flowering form called ‘Luteus’ but I’ve not seen it offered by nurseries recently. February … Evenings are stretching , yay !! A bit of colour is appearing in the garden Soil is warming again slowly and perennials are beginning to break through I tend to leave old flower stems on perennials over winter to provide some winter protection to the plants and a hidey hole for beneficial insects and bird feed but it will soon be time to chop all the old foliage off leaving room for the fresh foliage to romp on through. Grasses will also be showing signs of new foliage appearing at base and old leaves can be combed through to remove them Bulbs are also starting to stick their noses up too with snowdrops in full force in many gardens. My plan is to buy some snowdrops in the green and add them to the garden here. Lots of promise to come. Have a good weekend Caroline x

I’m so happy for the arrival of February, for the strengthening light and the energy rising. I spent a bit of time planting snapdragon seeds earlier. It’s too cold in the greenhouse just yet so there are trays on all the south windowsills! The bulbs had to move over and make a bit of room. I told myself this year I’d make a point of celebrating all that’s been planted in photographs. Giving all the flowers a bit of attention in the spotlight. That’s easy said in February but might be tricky in July! For now it’s the muscari’s moment. I've read-up at euphorbia.org and apparently the Flowers are either male or female , but can be clustered together in what is called a 'cyathium' , held within a structure called an 'involucre' ; I hope you can see in these pics.
