Don’t let my weird facials distract you from the fact my arms are almost as big as the points turnaround against Chester… Almost. This was a big game for all of us, we had a lot to prove. Myself personally, the reverse fixture against Chester was my first game back from my short lived retirement from American football. Honestly after the battering we took that game it would have been enough to make most just think “nah forget it I’m done” I have played a lot of sports. I have had lots of team highs and lots of team lows. Some at a decent level some at an amateur level, in my opinion you are not a real competitor until you’ve experienced a loss like 77-0. To be outclassed in such a decisive manner will cause all kinds of deep feelings you never expected a game where a ball gets thrown around to cause. What you do afterwards will say a lot about who you are, how you react to those feelings, not just what you feel, it’s stuff you can take into your everyday life. I honestly felt like the biggest tool on the planet after that first Chester game. I’d told everyone I know I was done, then upon my return I get my ass handed to me. I decided to stop playing hastily because I had a lot going on in my life at that time. If I’m being honest, this is the most fun I’ve ever had playing for the @sheffieldgiants The vibe around the team at this moment is incredible and I’m sure this run carries into next season. 2325 days ago, I posted this image on Facebook. It is a small collage of my time in Namibia, at the end of a year in which I spent 6 months in Africa. To this day, I think of my life in terms of pre- and post-Africa. I found things in my personality that I liked in Africa, I found confidence I'd not had before, and I found a way of life I wanted to work towards. I'd definitely be back. In the 6.5 years that followed, for whatever reason, I've yet to fulfil that promise I made to myself. I've used that fact to torture myself, telling myself (and my therapist), "WHY are you doing this? WHY are you not going back to Africa?" more often than Daryl Braithwaite tells somebody, "that's the way it's gonna be, little darlin'". At times, it has heavily weighed on my mental health that I don't feel I'm the best version of myself (and by some margin at times, too). Thankfully, I've developed healthier thought patterns than that since the pandemic, and I like to think I no longer put "somewhere other than here" on a pedestal that will cure whatever problem I may currently have. Nonetheless, Africa had a profound effect on me, and it has been a source of discomfort for a long time that I've not been back since. Until tomorrow, that is. Tomorrow, the counter stops at 2,326 days. I'm finally going back.
