Over this past weekend I had the honor to be apart of the Conejo Valley Boys and Girls Club SMART Girls Program. A program for girls navigating their way through self worth, confidence and everything in between us females go through growing up. This is a program I remember being apart of when I was in 7th grade. A fun time to gather with other girls and talk about our hardships or struggles or wins we were dealing with at that age. A group of girls navigating middle school life together, knowing that we’re not alone. All these years later, my mentor from my club reached out to me asking to lead a Yoga/Guided Meditation in the morning following being apart of a panelist group of other beautiful inspiring and might I add EXTREMELY SMART (who careers range from nurses to trainers to freaking engineers) women who had all been apart of the club years prior to. And what a beautiful full circle moment this day was. Nothing but words of wisdom came from every single woman who helped put on this day as well as the women leading workshops for the youth. And what a grateful feeling to once be a member, now to help lead the young girls I once was. Boys and Girls Club has been a HUUGE part of my life. My mentor and director from the club I was at helped shaped me to become the woman I am today. BGC has shown me so many adventures, some to which I still consider Home♥️ to this day and often go back to visit (Mammoth😚🫶🏼). It has connected me to many friends who I still see occasionally and keep up with via social media. Biggest thank you to the BGC for being a beautiful community of people who want nothing but the best for the next generation of youth✨🫶🏼♥️ They are our future. They are the world. Love them. It takes a village. That was the experience Osayaba Ayinla learned growing up in Nigeria. "What youth development looks like in Nigeria is pretty much community centered," Ayinla said. That means getting consistent lessons from everyone from your mom to your uncle to your sister and neighbor. "So as soon as I came to United States, and even in Minnesota, that was what I was envisioning youth development to look like." That, he said, led him to Boys and Girls Club of Rochester. "This this looks like the most stable village in Rochester." Ayinla serves as a mentor to teens at the Boys and Girls Club. Congratulations to @heckrodtwetlandreserve on being a recipient of one of our Octoberfest grants! The grant will be used to help fund their Coneflower Pavilion Project. The Coneflower Pavilion Project will continue Heckrodt Wetland Reserve’s efforts of inclusion for all people, and will highlight the Monarch butterfly and the role we all play in its future. The focal piece of the project will be an ADA friendly structure that will look like a purple coneflower with a Monarch butterfly on its peak. The Coneflower Pavilion will provide an elevated viewing and learning experience integrated with bilingual interpretation (Spanish and English), and there will also be a dual-view tower viewer for adults and youth/people in wheelchairs to see various plants and animal species. Giving a round of applause to our member Denise Teets who led a group of 60 volunteers to help redo and refresh the Boys & Girls Club for Work On Wilmington. Many of our other chapter members supported Denise in her efforts for the day of service.
