Birth Announcement! This past weekend, Cleveland Metroparks Zoo welcomed a #bontebok calf in African Savanna. The calf, estimated at about 20 pounds, was born in the outdoor habitat and was seen standing and walking alongside mom, Noel, after only 15 minutes! Und man merkt, dass die Tiere einerseits den Anblick von Menschen gewohnt sind, aber auch Abstand halten und die Flucht ergreifen, wenn man sich nähert. Bontebok This handsome antelope is endemic to the fynbos region of the Western Cape and nearly went extinct due to overhunting. In 1931, the 17 individuals left were saved by farmers and fenced into the newly proclaimed Bontebok National Park near Bredasdorp. Since then the population has increased and individuals are introduced into several protected areas in Western Cape. Nevertheless, the Bontebok still remains vulnerable. This was my first time seeing the rare bontebok, a southern African antelope. The bontebok’s range is primarily confined to South Africa, specifically the southwestern coastal region. Historically, they roamed across the fynbos and coastal renosterveld habitats of the Western Cape Province. However, due to habitat loss and hunting, their range has become fragmented, and they are now mostly found in protected areas and reserves within this region. (Damalisks, antelopes in the genus Damaliscus, include our East African topi.) Bonteboks were once on the brink of extinction, with only about 17 individuals remaining in the wild in the 19th century. The distinctive-looking Bontebok antelope, were once considered the rarest antelope in the world. By the early 20th century they were reduced to a wild population of only 17 individuals. However with careful conservation efforts by local farmers and later placed in nature conservation protected areas, it has survived.
