The distinctive-looking Bontebok antelope, were once considered the rarest antelope in the world. By the early 20th century they were reduced to a wild population of only 17 individuals. However with careful conservation efforts by local farmers and later placed in nature conservation protected areas, it has survived. The Malachite Sunbird is a large sunbird found in hilly fynbos (including protea stands as well as areas with aloes). It also occurs in parks and gardens (often nesting within those located in the Highveld). It is resident, but may move downhill in winter. This species, like most sunbirds, feeds mainly on nectar, although it will also take insects, especially when feeding young. Males have an elaborate display flight. It was found that male birds display their pectoral tufts almost continuously throughout the night, whilst asleep, and one hypothesis is that these function as eyespots to deter nocturnal predators.

Eight trips and counting - this week marks the 13th anniversary of our first trip to South Africa.
