Thought I would post this photograph (made with my iPhone), that offers some indication as to the content of my series of photographs I have been posting, that were made using expired film, and my Mother’s Kodak Box Reflex camera. The back of the Haa of Midbrake has been photographed whilst I am standing where the North Barn once stood. My Grandfather was born in one of these 2 buildings. The multi exposure photographs made with my Mother’s camera concentrate on the vacant gap where the North Barn once stood, (Alex Nicholson was kind enough to meet with me twice during my last visit. On the 2nd occasion he met with me in Breckon, outlining the space where the North Barn once stood).

The boats set out from Gloup Voe, just below where the memorial stands. @katie.breckon In my last post, I briefly talked about the isolation I felt living in the Kimberley and the journey home to New Zealand each year. Living between two homes, feeling nostalgic for both places prompted new photographic work. Comparing the colours and forms of one place to the other. I travelled a lot for work or to return back to NZ, and the repetition of travelling specific routes became a focus at one stage. As my role in Mowanjum Community is changing, I am reflecting more on my Kimberley adventures, journeys across this land and the tracks I repeatedly moved through. The Kimberley gets under your skin. It’s such a unique place. But the unrelenting heat can be overwhelming, and sometimes I will retreat into my imagination, taking me back to New Zealand, its lush coolness, the gothic undertones of the deep south. My name is Katie Breckon, @katie.breckon and early last week, I shared a little about my experience as a remote community arts worker teaching digital recording skills to Kimberley people. Today I will share artwork from my creative practice. I come from Wellington NZ, and have spent ten years living in the Kimberley. Returning home every New Zealand summer before COVID hit. I moved to Derby, West Kimberley, to work for @mowanjumarts in 2012. I live off the grid on a 10 acre bush block, and I like to explore the land around my home on the edge of the Derby savannah, which connects to the marsh and the infamous King sound. The colours, shapes and forms of the Kimberley landscape are vastly different to that of New Zealand. My experiences are unique to this place and difficult to translate or communicate to people outside of this space. Derby is isolated, and during my first six years here, I lived in a tight circle between the art centre, my home and the bush. I am incredibly fortunate that most of my travel through the Kimberley has been with Wandjina Wunggurr traditional owners. Through their guidance, I began to sense and see the landscape differently, in a more layered way. Mowanjum people taught me the importance of story ownership, a tradition that is upheld today and respects a person or family groups hereditary rights to land, and the Lai Lai (Dreamtime) stories attached to those areas and people. Traditional storytelling protocols encouraged me, as an artist, to focus on exploring my own story and experiences through my artwork.
