Coastal beauty in Pacifica, California. The Mori Point is a park in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, right at the coastline! It has a moderate trail, which is a 2.6-mile loop, but has multiple entry, and exit points, and one can choose to do a part of the trail that works for them. The trail offers diverse terrain, beautiful views of the ocean, and takes you through great vantage points. It also takes you to an accessible part of the shore of the Pacific Ocean. Also, do take the bootleggers steps from the shore to the trail. The steps are steep, but worth the effort! Days like this that produce beautiful images are so worth it!!! Something about this week’s trip up the coast to continue hiking the CCT felt a little “off” to me. Yeah, the hiking was awesome, the landscape mind-blowing, the people I met along the way incredibly lovely. I saw black sand beaches and a spectacular waterfall and otters frolicking in a kelp forest and sunsets that turned the whole world bright orange. But when the orange turned to black and the stars flickered above in the nearly moonless sky, and it was just me, alone at camp, I missed home. And my husband. And the refrigerator with all my favorite snacks. And Verizon cell phone reception so I could text my kids. I even missed my dog Duke crowding me in bed, his dreams of chasing squirrels throttling me awake at 2 am. Homesickness. For me it seems to hit when the days start to get short, when the feeling of the coming winter seeps under my jacket despite my best efforts to stay warm, unsettling my physical comfort and unraveling my sense of wellness and security. I suppose we all have off-days now and again. Monday and Tuesday were mine. It was a beautiful blessing of a solo trip. Take a hike on the California Coastal Trail in Half Moon Bay The Half Moon Bay State Park's Coastside Trail is a segment of the California Coastal Trail and runs parallel to the Pacific Coast along what used to be the Ocean Shore Railroad. The railroad itself was in operation for just 14 years before it was driven out of business in the early 1920s by the automobile. However, the railroad had a tremendous effect on the Northern California coastline. It opened the area to agriculture, created new communities along the shoreline and made the coastal beaches prime tourist destinations. The Coastside Trail is truly a destination trail. It offers sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean, access to several beaches and excellent nature viewing. Bird watching is quite good and a popular activity here. Red-tailed hawks, blue herons and red-winged blackbirds are spotted frequently, and large hawks can often be seen perched on benches and the trail's split-rail fence. Half Moon Bay State Beach is also home of the world-famous Mavericks, a surfing spot near Pillar Point that's visible from the trail. In winter, surfers can ride waves up to 80 feet high here.
