Welcome back to #Flashbackphotfriday! We would like you to meet our residents from the Samborer on Block 29, Reference 7. t the outset of the First World War, Sambor was taken over by the Russian army for one year. The Russians did not do anything against the local Jews. They acted otherwise in the small towns, and many of their residents fled to Sambor. For instance, in the adjoining town of Leuitebsk, forty-five Jews accused of assisting the Austrian army were tortured and sent to Siberia; the rest of the town's Jews fled to Sambor. As a result of the war and the large number of refugees in Sambor, there were more orphans. In 1915, after the Austrians reconquered Sambor, two orphanages were built, one for boys and the other for girls, with 108 children in both. In 1918, a nucleus of Hashomer Hatzair was established. At the beginning of 1918, a modern Talmud Torah was founded, with four classes for children aged six to fourteen, and in the middle of the year, a day Hebrew school with 500 students. After the issue of the Balfour Declaration, on 2 November 1917, a "Society for the Settlement of Eretz-Israel" was organized, with 400 members. The members applied to Jewish land tenants in the vicinity of Sambor to train them in agricultural work, and not a few undertook to train ten to fifteen persons. At the time of Austria's capitulation in November 1918 and the establishment of the Western Ukrainian Republic, in whose framework Sambor was included, and up to May 1919, a Jewish national committee of only Zionists functioned. #mounthebronlegacyproject #mounthebroncemetery #flushing #queens #cemetery #cemeteries #education #genaology #jewishgenaology #mounthebronresearch #jewish #heritage #jewishhistory #americanhistory #ancestors #history #Jewishheritage #cemeterywanderings #cemeteryexploreres #cemeteriesofinstagram #cemeteryfinds #landsmanshafts #porcelianphotos

Welcome back to #MarkerMonday! Isidore has a broken column on his stone. As we can see by the dates on his stone, he was a young man. Similar to tree, a broken column symbolizes a life cut short too soon. When it is girded with flowers is represents decay. It usually represents the loss of an important family member. Perhaps, he was the eldest or youngest child. #mounthebronlegacyproject #mounthebroncemetery #flushing #queens #cemetery #cemeteries #education #genaology #jewishgenaology #mounthebronresearch #jewish #heritage #jewishhistory #americanhistory #ancestors #history #Jewishheritage #cemeterywanderings #cemeteryexploreres #cemeteriesofinstagram #cemeteryfinds

John Elliot’s gravestone from 1859 has several symbols of mourning carved into it. Welcome back to #MarkerMonday! As we can see this star is upside down and full of symbols within it. It a sign that she was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, which are wives of freemasons. Its appellation also implies a relationship with the planet Venus, also called the “eastern star.” Each point on the star has an emblem of a different biblical heroine (Adah, Ruth, Esther, Martha, and Electa) and the qualities they represent- fidelity, constancy, loyalty, faith, and love. #mounthebronlegacyproject #mounthebroncemetery #flushing #queens #cemetery #cemeteries #education #genaology #jewishgenaology #mounthebronresearch #jewish #heritage #jewishhistory #americanhistory #ancestors #history #Jewishheritage #cemeterywanderings #cemeteryexploreres #cemeteriesofinstagram #cemeteryfinds

Welcome back to #Flashbackphotfriday! We would like you to meet our residents from the Tarnower Young Men on Block 21, Reference 12. Before World War II, about 25,000 Jews lived in Tarnow, a city in southern Poland, 45 miles east of Krakow (Cracow). Jews—whose recorded presence in the town went back to the mid-fifteenth century—comprised about half of the town's total population. A large portion of Jewish business in Tarnow was devoted to garment and hat manufacturing. The Jewish community was ideologically diverse and included both religious Hasidim and secular Zionists. After World War II deportations, the Germans ordered the surviving Jews in Tarnow, along with thousands of Jews from neighboring towns, into a ghetto. The ghetto was surrounded by a high wooden fence. Living conditions in the ghetto were poor, marked by severe food shortages, a lack of sanitary facilities, and a forced-labor regimen in factories and workshops producing goods for the German war industry. The Germans decided to destroy the Tarnow ghetto in September 1943. The surviving 10,000 Jews were deported, 7,000 of them to Auschwitz and 3,000 to the Plaszow concentration camp in Krakow. In late 1943, Tarnow was declared "free of Jews" (judenrein). By the end of the war, the overwhelming majority of Tarnow Jews had been murdered by the Germans. Although some 700 Jews returned to the city after liberation, virtually all of them soon left to escape local antisemitism. Organized in New York before 1917 by immigrants from Tarnów, Poland, to aid the sick and needy. Constitution. Membership application book, 1946–1971 (older application forms in German). #mounthebronlegacyproject #mounthebroncemetery #flushing #queens #cemetery #cemeteries #education #genaology #jewishgenaology #mounthebronresearch #jewish #heritage #jewishhistory #americanhistory #ancestors #history #Jewishheritage #cemeterywanderings #cemeteryexploreres #cemeteriesofinstagram #cemeteryfinds #landsmanshafts #porcelianphotos

Welcome back to #MarkerMonday! My favorite flower, the calla lily! In ancient Hebrew poetry, the lily was always a favorite simile as a symbol of purity. The white lily is found eight times in the Song of Solomon, it is the most mentioned flower in the Bible. Yet most of all the lily typifies Israel. As it withers in the sunlight, but blooms beneath the dew, so Israel withers away except God becomes as dew for her (Hos. xiv. 5), and she is renowned among the nations as the lily among the flowers. #mounthebronlegacyproject #mounthebroncemetery #flushing #queens #cemetery #cemeteries #education #genaology #jewishgenaology #mounthebronresearch #jewish #heritage #jewishhistory #americanhistory #ancestors #history #Jewishheritage #cemeterywanderings #cemeteryexploreres #cemeteriesofinstagram #cemeteryfinds

#MountHebronResident, Paul Small passed at the young age of 45. He was a Brooklyn born actor’s agent who help revive vaudeville temporarily in the 1940’s by producing a successful series of revies. He was a graduate of Erasmus Hall High School and Colby College. He broke into the show business by appearing as a bogus Arab in a troop of tumblers. Later he did vaudeville act impersonating Paul Whiteman. He subsequently established his own actor’s agency, Paul Small Artists, Ltd. He stubbornly refused to believe in the death of vaudeville. Welcome back to #MarkerMonday! It was a unique, small but unusual find on the grounds. When we saw this butterfly, we couldn’t help but share it with you. The butterfly has been a symbol of transformation, hope and faith for thousands of years. The butterfly is also a symbol of our life processes, since it goes through so many life cycles -- from larva to caterpillar to chrysalis and finally to a beautiful, flying butterfly. What a beautiful symbol of life, love and peace. #mounthebronlegacyproject #mounthebroncemetery #flushing #queens #cemetery #cemeteries #education #genaology #jewishgenaology #mounthebronresearch #jewish #heritage #jewishhistory #americanhistory #ancestors #history #Jewishheritage #cemeterywanderings #cemeteryexploreres #cemeteriesofinstagram #cemeteryfinds
