It is one of the historical goldweights of Charles Ratton It depicts a unusual double-janiforme figurine with a very stylized & interesting body I do not know other similar Akan bronzes & I would be grateful if you would point them out to me if you knew any Akan Ashanti Ex Auction House Collin du Bocage (ex Charles Ratton : his inventory number 1698) Copper alloy - 5cm Photo courtesy Valentin Clavairolles #tribalart #artafricain #afrikanischekunst #arteafricana #africanart #africanminiatures #africanartminiatures #africanbronzes #africanartbronzes #africangoldweights #goldweights #akan #ashanti #akanart #ashantiart #akanminiatures #ashantiminiatures #akanbronzes #ashantibronzes #akangoldweights #ashantigoldweights #akanfigures #ashantifigures #akanfigurines #ashantifigurines #collindubocage #charlesratton #valentinclavairolles #peronicollection #peroniafricanart

It is one of the historical goldweights of Charles Ratton - It depicts a buffalo head surmounted by three birds - Its workmanship is extremely detailed and refined - Its patina & signs of usage speak for themselves and need no further words - It is a very famous bronze that was also published in 1967 by Margaret Webster Plass Akan Ashanti (or perhaps Senufo?) Ex Auction House Collin du Bocage - ex Margaret Webster Plass - ex Charles Ratton (inventory x923/) Copper alloy - 4,7 cm Please note the great similarity of this Ashanti goldweight with the famous “buffalo” or “silence” rings of the Senufo : an affinity & equality of styles remarkable and really interesting - In fact this object “at first sight” could look like Senufo - And sincerely also I thought and would think so - But more than fifty years ago it was declared and published as Akan by its two owners who were very experienced people of African art & who maybe had precise information about its sure origin - So I would tend to respect their opinions and Akan attribution In any case and because of the above mentioned mix of styles - maybe it could be a bronze made by the Akan for the Senufo or viceversa made by the Senufo for the Akan ? - or perhaps it is an object made by the Senufo for themselves and then came for unknown reasons to the Akan that used it as a goldweight ? Item published by Margaret Webster Plass on her famous book “African Miniatures - The Goldweights of the Ashanti” (London - 1967) - indisputably one of the most important publications in the world among those dedicated to the Akan Ashanti bronzes - and a book with photos only of really old & authentic & tribally used objects Photo courtesy Valentin Clavairolles #tribalart #artafricain #afrikanischekunst #africanart #africanminiatures #africanartminiatures #africanbronzes #africanartbronzes #africangoldweights #goldweights #akan #ashanti #senufo #akanart #ashantiart #senufoart #akanminiatures #ashantiminiatures #senufominiatures #akanbronzes #ashantibronzes #senufobronzes #akangoldweights #ashantigoldweights #collindubocage #margaretwebsterplass #charlesratton #valentinclavairolles #peronicollection #peroniafricanart

Kota reliquary, ex. Ratton, early 20th/late 19th century. During the 1930s Georg & Lore Kegel were close with Charles Ratton. At this time, he sold this object called "mbulu ngulu" to Georg Kegel. Now, almost 90 years later, this piece has been offered again - and SOLD. To receive upcoming offers please check options in our bio or on our website. Zemanek says: A stylistically comparable guardian figure from the Ndassa region (ex. Heinrich Umlauff) published by La-Gamma, 2007, p. 256, fig. 80. In their combination of wood and hammered metal, Kota reliquary guard figures are unique among the forms of African sculpture. As with the Fang, ancestor worship ("bwete" cult) also plays a very important role for the Kota. It is expressed in these anthropomorphic metal-decorated figures, which are called "boho-nabwete" in the north and "mbulu-ngulu" in the south. From the 1870s onwards, the Kota reliquary figures were among the first African sculptures to be acquired by European naturalists and explorers - including Paul Du Chaillu, Alfred Marche, Oscar Lenz and Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza. From the early 20th century onwards, avant-garde artists - including Europeans such as Pablo Picasso, Fernand Léger and Paul Klee, Americans such as Alfred Stieglitz and Africans such as Ernest Mancoba - collected and were inspired by the art of the Kota. . . . . . . . . . . . . #mbulungulu #kotafigure #reliquaryfigure #georgkegel #charlesratton @tribalartauction #umlauff #alfredmarche #oscarlenz #Pierresavorgnandebrazza #pablopicasso #fernandleger #paulklee #alfredstieglitz #Ernestmancoba #woodandmetall #ancestorworship

This Kota reliquary figure is one of the few pieces Georg Kegel acquired before he married Lore Konietzko, the woman you see in this photo. Acquired in Paris in the 1930s, according to Georg's notes from Charles Ratton or Pierre Verite. There are probably three known examples of this type or by this hand. The second was at Hourdé/Monbrison, the third was donated to the Tervuren Museum by Olbricht and published by Walden in "Der Sturm" in 1926. Especially the latter seems to be very similar to the one shown here. . . . . . . . #kotareliquaryfigure #bakotafigure #bakota #guardianfigure #blackandwhitephoto #mbulungulu #historicphotography #ekoihead #nigerianart #ejaghamheadcrest #bakuba #senufofigure #squattingfigure #luluafigure #benalulua #publishedart #exhibitedart #charlesratton #pierreverite #boughtinparis #tervuren #gabonart #olbrichtcollection

This prestige cap was created in the late 19th to early 20th century by a Chokwe artisan in what is present-day Angola. It was part of a collection of headdresses from the Congo River Basin that were either forcefully removed or traded during the colonial conquest of the region and then sold on the European art market. They were acquired in the 1930s by Charles Ratton, the preeminent dealer in African Art in Paris in this period. After Ratton put the collection on display at the Mode au Congo exhibition at his gallery in 1937, it was acquired by French-American milliner Lilly Daché. She subsequently used the creative pieces as inspiration in her own designs, as chronicled in an article in Life magazine claiming that "Africa’s Belgian Congo Sets the Style in Hats for American Women.” Illustrated here are 1) the Chokwe cap now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art; 2) my miniature facsimile created for display to promote this story; and 3) A hat by Lilly Daché clearly inspired by this original design. In one hour I will post 12 recent acquisitions of museum-quality Oceanic art to my website. There is a Coastal Ramu River mask from the estate of Constance McCormick Fearing, the first time on the market for over 40 years and several objects from the Seymour Lazar Collection—a superb Fijian club, a beautiful Abelam coconut shell cup and an ancient pre-contact Simbai shield—both archaic and sophisticated. In addition to the objects I’ve posted in ESSAYS an article by Dieter Klein on the photographs of the Protestant missionary Wilhelm Diehl taken around 1910 in Astrolabe Bay and the Huon Gulf region of New Guinea. For my DREAM PIECE this month I discuss the fabulous Coastal Ramu River neckrest deaccessioned by the Art Institute of Chicago and sold at Christie’s New York in November of 1996. A once in a lifetime piece bought by a Swiss couple who had admired the neckrest for nearly 30 years prior to getting the opportunity to acquire it. For the PROVENANCE section I have two additions. Barry Craig has written on the patrol officer Kenneth Thomas who in the late 1920s/early 1930s collected some very interesting objects in the remote Torricelli Mountains. Philippe Bourgoin has provided us an essay on the painter Jacques Duthoo who assembled a collection of African and Oceanic art from dealers like Charles Ratton and Madeleine Rousseau. Lastly, in the PAST EXHIBITIONS section I have added photos from my 2009 Parcours des Mondes show in Paris. There is a Yangoru Boiken piece of great antiquity with a devilish grin. This year’s Parcour des Mondes show is fast approaching and I am busily assembling my exhibition. I am still short a handful of pieces of if you happen to have a spare masterpiece you want to monetize let me know. - Charles Ratton, Paris, October 1 st 1953 #GaleriePatrikFröhlich #CharlesRatton #blackandwhite #Masterpiece

The Bangwa Queen, from the previous photograph, seen here in a celebrated 1937 photograph by Man Ray, (and in picture 2). It originated in Cameroon as a depiction of a royal figure and was either purchased or taken out of the country in 1899 by a German man named Gustav Cornau (picture 3). It was briefly in the Volkerkunde Museum in Berlin before being bought by Charles Ratton (picture 4), who sold it to Rubinstein in the early 1930s. She featured it in the 1935 African Negro Art exhibit at MOMA. After Rubinstein moved out of 895 Park in 1936, it appears to have migrated to her Paris apartment (picture 5) which may have been where Man Ray photographed it. Harry Franklin, (picture 6) a collector from Beverly Hills, bought it at the 1966 Parke Bernet auction for $29,000, then the highest price paid for an African artwork (picture 7), and Sothebys sold it at Franklin's death in 1990 for $3.4 million, also a world record. (In comparison to its greater than hundred-fold appreciation, the stock market only tripled in value during the same period!) More recently, it was exhibited at the museum of the Dapper Foundation until it closed in 2017. The leaders of the Bangwa have been asking for it to be returned to Cameroon, but to date it remains in France. The Metropolitan Museum of Art has a magnificent relative, the Bangwa King (picture 8) which is definitely worth seeing. #helenarubinstein #bangwaqueen #cameroon #gustavcornau #volkerkundemuseum #charlesratton #moma #895park #manray #harryfranklin #parkebernet #sothebys #dapperfoundation #bangwa #bamileke #metropolitanmuseumofart #bangwaking

| Let’s figure André Breton in a visit to overseas territory struck by the sight of a glass melted during the 1902 volcanic eruption of the Montagne Pelée: he has just reinvented ready-made! This will be one among the many « disrupted objects » exhibited at the Galerie Ratton in 1936, objects created by the disaster which will be an aesthetic shock for modern artists - such as Brassaï who discovers in 1946 at Picasso’s atelier an accumulation of distorted and crumpled glasses just as beautiful as a work of art @fondationclement #fondationclement #muséefrankaperret #martinique #montagnepelée #volcano #volcaniceruption #surrealism #surréalisme #andrebreton #breton #brassai #picasso #pablopicasso #charlesratton #primitivisme #moderne #artmoderne #musee #museum #artexhibition #artcollector #artlover #artwatchers_united #arthistory #modern #modernart #fineart #avantgarde #accumulation #readymade

Moments ago, I posted 10 new acquisitions of museum-quality Oceanic art to my website. Highlights this month include an ancient pre-contact Coastal Ramu River neckrest formerly in the Bremen Museum, a beautiful Marquesas Island stilt step, a late 19th century Elema culture spirit board and a battle-scarred Ramu River shield collected by a Canadian caver in 1965. In the ESSAYS section I have posted an article on Micronesian Shark Tooth Weapons by Nicolas Py that describes the known types and uses of these easily recognizable but rarely written about objects. To the LIVING WITH OCEANIC ART section there are images of three collections—in Sydney, Scottsdale and a mostly Polynesian collection on the East Coast of the US. I have added a small but powerful female Sepik figure to my DREAM PIECE listings and then two PROVENANCE entries—one on the Parisian dealer Charles Ratton written by Philippe Peltier and one on the renowned collector Morris Pinto by Paul Lewis. Finally, I have posted photos from my Paris 2014 Parcours des Mondes exhibition to the PAST EXHIBITIONS section. . . . . . . #newacquisitions #oceanicart #dreampieces #livingwithoceanicart #sepikfigure #gopeboard #charlesratton #morrispinto #artdisplay #collection #artcollector #tribalart #livingwithart #modernism #artconsultant #artpremier #archdigest #tribal #artresearch #artoceanien #ethnographicart #southpacificart #refined #tribalartmagazine #oceania #pacificart #tribaldesign #arthistory #artappreciation #understandingart

This Dan mask is an important work of a great artist. It is known since 1933 and would enhance any museum‘s collection. It could be placed next to any masterpiece of Modern Art. #africanarts #danmask #charlesratton #modernart #artcollector #catalogue #pionieersofmodernart

Catalogue Online Now - In May 1933 André Level – owner of the famous Galerie Percier and one of the most significant and earliest advocate of African art as Art per se – published this little catalogue. It was one of the first sales catalogue dedicated to African Art showing that André Level was not only a pioneer in the recognition of African art, but also an active advocate of African Art as an art dealer. Works of this exhibition were acquired among others by Helena Rubinstein and Charles Ratton.  #GaleriePatrikFröhlich #PioneersofModernAesthetics #Catalogue #AndreLevel #GaleriePercier #CharlesRatton

In May of 2019 Sotheby’s New York juxtaposed important Oceanic art from the Harry Franklin Collection with paintings and sculpture from their Impressionist and Modern Art evening sale going on the next day. I have to admit this ancient Blackwater River hook does look fantastic next to Chaim Soutine’s “La femme en rouge” painted in 1923-24. I will have the suspension hook as part of my exhibition next month at the Parcours des Mondes in Paris. Wish I had the Soutine to hang next to it. . . . . . . #modernart #soutine #sothebys #charlesratton #oceanicart #impressionism #exhibition #paris #artdisplay #collection #artcollector #tribalart #livingwithart #modernism #artconsultant #artpremier #archdigest #tribal #artresearch #artoceanien #ethnographicart #southpacificart #refined #tribalartmagazine #oceania #pacificart #tribaldesign #arthistory #artappreciation #understandingart

Intemporelle: Fang Sculpture ✨⚡️✨ The Al Thani Collection in the most breathtaking exhibition brings together exceptional works representing a wide range of cultures and civilizations and magnificently highlights this iconic work. Fang sculptures from Gabon for reliquary ensembles in the form of a commemorative head have been described as the earliest form of Fang ancestral veneration, eyema bieri, in sculptural form. The head sat atop a container of ancestral relics – symbolically the soul of the body and the center of emotion, whereas the head was the summit of the body and the guiding force of reason. This graceful head depicted with large eyes for seeing and interpreting, and a small mouth with closed lips demonstrating the wise ancestors’ emphasis on listening rather than speaking. It hears, but only obliquely as the dynamic coiffure, which represents elaborate tresses of the nobility of 19th century Fang society, mimics but partially covers this sensory mode. The head rested on an altar which could have lived for as many as nine generations, and was anointed with palm oil which gives the black, layered, bitumen-like surface, as well as a shine whereby even today the sculptures have a vital glow. ✨⚡️✨ @al.thani.collection @aminjaffer_curator #africanart #facesofhistory #althani #aminjaffer #timelessbeauty #nobility #devotion #charlesratton #jamesjohnsonsweeney #modernart #modigliani #intemporelle #ageofreason #fang #eyemabieri #vitality #glow #hoteldelamarine #paris #placedelaconcorde

A few days before our summer closure, focus on this marvelous Horned Mask by Guro-Ligbi People! The rhythmic patterning of this mask is visible both in its form and color. Topped by two solid, curved horns, the face exhibits a spirited expression. The hairline is delineated with ochre and white pigmentation. The eyes, semilunar in shape and lined with the same color pigments, open slightly beneath a broad forehead. On the cheeks are two incisions, also outlined with the deep red and white coloring. The elongated nose splits the forehead and face in half until just above the gaping mouth, which bears a full set of small teeth. This subtly expressive mask is a beautiful example of the elegance of sculpture from Ivory Coast. This anthropomorphic mask may belong to the corpus of entertainment masks. Entertainment masks were used in public settings and often represent or recall animals such as elephants, duikers, and antelopes. _ Horned Mask Guro-Ligbi People Ivory Coast Late 19th – Early 20th century Wood with encrusted patina, pigments, kaolin Height: 30 cm – 12’’ Provenance: Charles Ratton, Paris Pierre M.
