Our curiosity about the Pueblos Blancos (White Village) in Andalusia region was the main reason for us to visit Ronda. Similar to many cities in the Andalusia region, Ronda was conquered by the Moorish rulers since 8th century. Until the shift of power in 15th century, the Moors who stayed on were suppressed and had to seek refuge in the mountainous areas of Southern Andalusia which explained why these villages were built in the geographical challenging locations. The city continued to be in turmoil due to Napoleon’s invasion in 19th century as well as the Spanish Civil War in 20th century. Some actual account of events during the civil war were adapted to a fictional novel written by the Nobel Prize winning writer, Ernest Hemingway, such as the killings of the nationalists being thrown off the Cliff of El Tajo. Duval Street is the beating heart of Key West’s Old Town. It is lined with shops, cigar stores, galeries, restaurants, and over 40 bars, many with great live music, and one wiith the walls and ceilings covered in dollar bills. Even though it’s only 1.25 miles long, it is nicknamed “The Longest Street in the World” as it runs from the Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic Ocean. Many of the bars are historic and iconic, with a colorful past. The Bull and Whistle has a separate entrance for the “clothing optional” Garden of Eden Rooftop Bar. Ernest Hemingway, the famous American writer, used to hang out drinking at the old, 1933 Sloppy Joe’s, which is now Captain Tony’s Saloon. This is where Jimmy Buffett got his start in Key West in the early 1970s, often getting paid in tequila. He pays tribute to the bar and its owner in the song “Last Mango in Paris.” It’s also where you can attempt the “Key West coin toss” (into the mouth of the grouper over the door). The “new” 1937 Sloppy Joe’s also had some great music, as did the Smokin’ Tuna Saloon where the chickens were on the open air dance floor and around the stage in the courtyard. Fun fact: Key West’s signature cocktail is called the Rum Runner, named after those who smuggled rum to Key West during Prohibition from 1920 until 1933. Another fun evening activity is to catch the sunset at Mallory Square. While the locals say it’s not the best place to see the sunset, the Sunset Celebration at Mallory Square is a unique daily Key West festival. In addition to the small souvenir shops and food vendors there are musicians, artists and performers (jugglers, clowns, magicians) to entertain the often quite large crowds. It gets busy on the water too with many sunset cruise boats of all sorts (from little tiki boats to large sailboats and catamarans), and tons of small boats all heading out to watch the sunset (and later all returning). The seawall gets very crowded, so we like to go for a drink and something to eat at the dining patio right on the water, next to the festival crowds. This time we were treated to an unusual sunset which almost made the sailboats appear like ghost ships.

We had wanted to visit the Truman Little White House for years, but never did until now. It is located in the Truman Annex in Key West’s Old Town neighborhood, a high-end gated waterfront community located on former U.S. Navy property. It was developed in the 1980s, but the homes are in keeping with traditional Old Town homes and perfectly match the style of the beautiful Little White House which once served as President Harry S. Truman’s winter White House. The home was constructed in 1890. It was designed as the first officer’s quarters on the U.S. naval station and served as the naval station’s command headquarters during the Spanish-American War, World War I and World War II. President Truman first visited it in the winter of 1946 to escape the Washington D.C. winter and fell in love with the home and Key West. He spent 175 days at the house between 1946 and 1952. Visiting the house today is like stepping back in time as the house is decorated and furnished as it was in 1949, with many of President Truman’s personal belongings. We loved the very interesting and nostalgic guided tour of this gorgeous home. We also visited Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park (the southernmost state park in the continental United States) for the first time. The fort predates the Civil War and is a National Historic Monument. It houses the world’s largest cache of Civil War armament. The views from the walls are spectacular, and locals told us the park’s popular beach offers the best sunset views in Key West. The birthplace of Pan Am, Pan American World Airways’ first office where the first American international flight ticket was bought, sits on the corner opposite the gate to the Truman Annex and is now a restaurant and brewery. We didn’t have time to visit the gorgeous 1840s Audubon House or the nearby Key West Shipwreck Museum on this trip. The home the home was owned by Captain John Huling Geiger, one of Florida’s most successful Florida wreckers and one of Key West’s wealthiest residents at a time when the ship wrecking industry flourished with frequent wrecks on the offshore reefs.

I love visiting the Hemingway House in Key West, FL, for its island beauty, wrap around veranda, romantic history, nostalgic vibe, and six-toed cats. Built in 1851 in a Spanish-Colonial style, the house was in disrepair when American writer Ernest Hemingway got the house in 1931 and completely renovated and remodeled it. It sits on a large lot across the street from the lighthouse and also accommodates a writing studio, a beautiful lush garden, and an in-ground pool. Hemingway lived in the house until 1939 and wrote some of his famous works there, including the 1936 short stories “The Snows of Kilimanjaro” and his 1937 novel “To Have and Have Not.” The house became a National Historic Landmark in 1968 and is decorated how it was when Hemingway lived there. The house is also home to 60 or so polydactyl (six-toed) cats, descendents from Hemiway’s white cat Snow White. They roam the house freely and visitors will find them snoozing on the beds, chairs, even even the gift shop’s shelves. Fun fact: polydactyl cats are not a separate breed. Having six toes is a trait that can appear in any cat breed. The first Key West Lighthouse was built in 1825 to aid safe navigation to and from the 1823 Naval Base and commercial vessels navigating the reefs to enter the port. The current lighthouse was built in 1848 and is 73 feet tall. We walked the 88 steps up to the top of the light to take in the 360 degree views. I was struck by how green Key West is, with many buildings and homes hidden by the lush vegetation. The views of the turquoise water were stunning, even if on one side a very large cruise ship appeared larger than life docked at this otherwise very picturesque town without high rises. The restored Keeper’s Quarters houses a small museum. The Southernmost point buoy marks the southernmost point in the continental United States, or the Lower 48. It’s a major Key West tourist attraction and photo opportunity. The line to pose for a picture was very long so we just quickly snapped a picture from the side while people switched. From there we walked up Duval Street, lined with shops, galeries, restaurants, and over 40 bars.

Even though we have been to Key West quite a few times (including on our boat), we always enjoy going back and playing tourist, relishing in the Old Florida and Island vibes. I love wandering around the historic district with its beautiful white and “island-colored” homes and quaint cottages (pink, blue, turquoise) with white trim, porches, and picket fences, and finding a shaded courtyard or patio for a drink and a bite to eat. Key West is also known for its partying, with its many bars (including some historic ones) and live music. Most of them can be found on and around Duval Street. A great way to start the day is at the “Greetings from Key West” mural with a coffee from the famous Cuban Coffee Queen (by the Historic Seaport waterfront), the best place for Cuban coffee in Old Town. Jonathan ordered a traditional café con leche with a breakfast sandwich, and I had a delicious turmeric milk. Just down the road from the mural is another Internet-famous photo opportunity by the vintage truck covered in stickers parked at a typical Keys gift shop selling kitschy souvenirs and sea shells. The famous lobster trap Christmas tree stands here during the holidays. A second truck covered in stickers is parked outside a little seafood shack (hidden by lush greenery) across the parking lot. From there, we wandered around the historic district, wondering what it would be like to live there. The Mile Marker 0 and the End of U.S. 1 signs were the next photo opportunity. They mark the beginning and end of U.S. Route, or Highway, 1 which stretches 2,370 miles from from Fort Kent, Maine to Key West, Florida. We chose a very popular restaurant for brunch, and even though it’s a little off the beaten path and it was relatively early, there was a significant wait. Thankfully, they have a fun bar across the street to pass the time. As we walked to our table I heard someone calling my name. By some big coincidence, friends from back home had also just been seated, so we sat together and got to catch up. It was such a fun and typical Key West lunch with laughter, live music, chickens and cats wandering around the tables, delicious food, and amazing Key Lime Pie.
