Actually I cannot remember much of the lyrics other than that. @clarsauctiongallery #clarsauction just acquired this sweet group of #japanese boys dressed in #heian period (9-12th c) carved wood group which I first assumed were attendants of #shotoku Tashi who made #buddhism the state religion in #japan in the 6th c. (See the early painting of him and two attendants from the treasury at Kakurinji). But dress and hair wise I am leaning more to it being an image of Zennishi Doji - the scion of Bishamonten (Lokapala guardian of the North) and Kisshoten the Buddhism emanation of the Hindu goddess Svaraswati. (See him lower right in Bishamonten scroll from @princetonu_artmuseum #princetonartmuseum dated Kamakura 13th c). What remains undeciphered is the other attendant boys. Hmmmm? Keep researching. One of the last projects Andy Warhol worked on before his death in 1987, "Letter to the World (The Kick) from Martha Graham," is one of three prints by the renowned American artist in 1986. Created to commemorate the 16th anniversary of the Martha Graham Center of Contemporary Dance in New York. Called the ‘Picasso of dance,’ Martha Graham (1894-1991) was a pioneering figure in the world of modern dance, known for her innovative choreography and contributions to the art form. This series compliments Graham by showing a variation of her abilities as a dancer and someone who communicates profound emotion through movement and physical expression. Warhol focused on a famous photograph of Graham, captured in her iconic dance pose, "The Kick." Taken by American photographer Barbara Morgan, known for depicting modern dancers. This gesture is a powerful and dynamic movement that exemplifies the expressive nature of her dance style. Warhol's approach, as with much of his work, involved the use of silkscreen printing. He often used a process of layering images and colors to create a striking visual impact. Radiant colors layered against a dark background to give the figure an illuminated presence as though she were on a lit stage. The use of vibrant colors and repetitive patterns is a hallmark of Warhol's artistic style, and this work is no exception. Warhol's significant artistic expression combines modern pop culture and dance elements. This blending of themes and styles is typical of Warhol's work, which challenged traditional notions of art and celebrity, just as he had done in earlier works of Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor and Elvis Presley. Warhol's influence on the art world has been profound; his embrace of commercialism and obsessions brought pop culture to the front of the art world. ⁣Born in 1912, Gordon Onslow Ford began painting at the age of 11. After several visits during his time in the British Navy, Onslow Ford moved to Paris to pursue a career in art. There he would be invited by André Breton to join the Surrealist group. Onslow Ford moved to New York, and gave a series of lectures at the New School for Social Research and organized influential shows in 1941. ⁣ ⁣ 1947, Onslow Ford moved to San Francisco. After meeting Jean Varda, both men decided they wanted to be closer to the water. So, they rescued the SS Vallejo, a decommissioned ferryboat. Docked at Gate 5 in the abandoned shipyards north of San Francisco in Sausalito, Onslow Ford and Varda proceeded to renovate the boat and build their studios there. They could not have imagined that the Vallejo would become a flash point for the artistic renaissance that would take place in the Bay Area. Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, Ruth Asawa, and Maya Angelou shared ideas and inspiration on board. Nghiêm was one of Vietnam's most celebrated painters of the 20th century. Born in 1922 in Nam Trung Commune, Nam Dan District, Nghe An Province, he passed away in 2016. Known for his contributions to Vietnamese modern art and his exploration of traditional Vietnamese painting techniques. "Year of the Goat" is a lacquered panel, depicting the zodiac animal from 1967 in the Vietnamese lunar calendar, the goat. Which is associated with creativity and good taste. Nghiêm's ability to adapt the lacquer technique to different subjects showcased his versatility. Embodying his undeniable roots in Vietnam, blending traditional imagery with contemporary artistic expressions, creating a unique fusion of styles. Nghiêm utilized lacquer technique, layering and polishing for a glossy, textured effect. He painstakingly layered lacquer, allowing each coat to dry before adding depth and texture. Using traditional and modern pigments, minerals, eggshells, and natural materials, he created vibrant color palettes and added texture. He combined lacquer with silk, gold leaf, and sand for complexity. Notably, in “Year of the Goat,” he displayed mastery over layers, colors, and textures. Beyond technique, Nghiêm bridged ancient and contemporary art, elevating lacquer to new heights and leaving an impactful legacy. As early as 500 AD, Colombian emeralds were an essential resource for indigenous peoples in the region. The Muzo mine and the Chivor mine, located deep in the Andes, produced emeralds that the Muzo people believed to have mystical properties, brought to them by legend of Fura and Tena.
