So- An announcement- I have just recently become aware of the fact that picking up seashells is really not a good idea anymore. It seems harmless, but it actually has far reaching consequences. One- hermit crabs are having to resort to using bits of plastic for their homes. The numbers in seashells/creatures has been plummeting because of the rise in sea temperatures and disruptive human activities such as trawling sea beds. To remove any shells from beaches just adds to the problem. Not only do shells provide shelter for various animals, they help in stabilising beaches, provide food when broken down and are just an essential cog in the sea’s ecology. Eco systems are so inter dependent and fragile, that interrupting just one thing can have far reaching consequences. So, just as I am of the belief that every little bit of plastic removed from the sea makes a difference, so too, every shell is important. I will be returning the shells I have collected , other than just a small collection of my most special finds. From now, my treasures will have to be only things that don’t belong in the sea. If I do find a very special shell, I will only photograph it, as a form of record keeping. #dontpickupseashells #cleanseas #seatreasures

Beach clean I just got all my photos printed off for my collaboration module, where I’ve been collaborating with a beach clean team on the north coast of Cornwall. I have created a series of 15, 6-inch by 6-inch prints of rubbish found on the beach. Each item has been photographed with a macro lens, so you really can get up close and see all the details of where the sea has worn away at the objects. This module has been both stressful and fun to do and has really made me experiment with my approach when photographing items.
