It is not often that people ask us if they can give up part of their life in order to help our families, but Larina, Chris, Dani and their entire team, they sure did. The Birdies for Butterflies crew not only hosted a beautiful golf tournament that spread awareness about EB, but they also raised over $56,000 for The Butterfly Family Fund to support our families and Children’s Hospital Colorado to support their EB clinic!! We were surrounded by good people wanting to make a great difference and to be the recipient of their love, is something we hold with honor. We not only met kind, generous donors, but we met some of the most influential people in the world of EB including Catherine from Debra/Children's Hospital Colorado, and Henry from The Butterfly Children Fund/Camp Spirit. 🧠 Sharing a 3 year update on the blog today! 3 years ago (yesterday) Grace had an ETV/CPC for her hydrocephalus. This life-changing brain surgery, a combination of creating a hole in the third ventricle of the brain and cauterizing the choroid plexus, has allowed Grace to live a shunt-free life. 2 years ago I didnt know if you’d live to see another day. I didnt know if Id get to watch you grow up or if Id ever see what you’d look like as a teenager. 2 years ago I was living my worst nightmare and so were you. You were in so much pain and I was by your side through every minute of it. We didnt sleep for 36 hours until they intubated you to put you to sleep, watching them poke you and shove things into your body all the keep you alive until a liver was found was absolute torture for me. Waiting for a phone call that would save your life had me falling to my knees. and on Nov 18th around 6:30pm we got that call and on Nov 19th your life was saved after 15hours waiting to know if my baby would be okay. I am SOOOO forever grateful for you my handsome boy. I love you with all my heart and hold a very special place for you. Love kept you alive, I told you i wouldnt leave that hospital without you and I didnt. September is NICU awareness month and man do we have so much to owe to the wonderful NICU at Colorado Childrens Hospital. These pictures are so hard to look at but we were so well taken care of and without the amazing staff it would have been so much harder to get through. They took such great care of not only Emerie but me and victor too. The NICU was literally the hardest, I pray no one has to see there baby in there cause it's so so hard. It's mentally & physically intensely draining and my mama heart just struggled so much during those 2 months. MRI #11 is our (fingers crossed) last one! Today was Grace’s 2-year post-op MRI to ensure her ventricles have remained the same size & the ETV hole is still open. It was also the first MRI we attended as a family. Per usual, we had to explain to the MRI tech that an ETV/CPC isn’t a shunt and that Grace has nothing implanted in her brain. It’s amazing how this life-altering surgery is still so unknown. As I laid in the MRI machine with Grace (as she calmly listened to Frozen), I was just overcome with gratitude. Knock on wood, but Grace’s acute hydrocephalus journey is almost over. Back when she was diagnosed in February 2020 I never thought we’d be here. I didn’t think we’d have 11 MRIs, an ultrasound, an x-ray, PT, OT, speech, vision, endocrine, and audiology appointments. One more follow-up appointment with our Boston neurosurgeon to gooooo! Highs: 1. Audrey is able to eat Pedialyte (one ounce/hour) starting today. She seemed content with that for a while, but wants more. She should be able to start eating tomorrow. 🤞🏼2. She got her catheter removed today. 3. Her lab numbers look good and are trending in the right direction. 4. The whites of her eyes are white! They’ve always been yellow, and it’s so nice to see her with bright eyes! 👀 5. She may be discharged from the PICU and moved to a regular floor tomorrow. All of these things indicate that her new liver is working properly. Oh, and my brother got to visit Audrey today. 🤗 Lows: She is showing signs of discomfort and pain. It’s so hard watching her so miserable. 🥹 John is also having a rough day with pain and nausea. This will be a bumpy road. Today I gave Blood for the 1st time ever! I have never been an ideal candidate for blood giving. Not because I am unhealthy but because I was born to a woman who had Hep C in the 80’s. Then I was too skinny for a few years but today was the day that I finally gave it away! I was so worried that I would get weak but it went amazingly! I was so honored to be able to help out. So now 5 Colorado Children will have blood when they need it! This makes my heart so happy!❤️ I encourage everyone to take a moment and help out if you can. LINK IN BIO for over a month now i have given my all and will continue for this incredible miracle baby (Baby Angel) When nothing else matters in the world except advocating to the doctors exchanging support with my wife and praying to god hourly for a swift recovery from all the surgeries living Hour by Hour scared when you hear beeps or alarms while sleeping in the hospital room asking every day if my wife can hold hold baby Angel or seeing a phone call from the hospital while you are in a hospital sleep room and not know what is going to be on the other side when you answer. Having the conversation with the doctor that is this HemoDialysis does not work we would have to go to ECMO (life support) being told its minute by minute. Its is scary. I think my wife, God and all the people that have help support and give prayer for my baby Angel who is the true Hero in this as he has already overcome so much and has yet to over come so much more. There has been 3 close calls where his blood pressure has dropped he gets pale un responsive and its the scariest thing to see and endure. Judy and I are such an amazing team and appreciate everyone's help support and donations. I never thought I would be away from work this long but I cant imagine being any where else in the world. I never thought I would not be ready to lose everything for anything. I tell you from the depths of my heart it means so much that everyone is helping and sharing the link to support us and our family. Its odd to me that every day we have a routine wake up see if they are offering free breakfast then go drop off breast milk then sit with doctor over rounds to discuss todays plan for meds and CRT Dialysis then go do laundry at facility at Ronald McDonald house down the street then make a sandwich and go sit in room comfort baby as much as we can between meds tubes lines and everything that has to be done daily in NICU here at Colorado Children's Hospital. The Nurses Doctors here at this facility are amazing and I wish all hospitals ran like this, the world would be a better place. it is truly amazing what they can do here at Colorado Childrens Hopital.
