Meet the UK’s last remaining species of wild feline: the Scottish wildcat! Another massive highlight of my visit to Shepreth Wildlife Park was seeing their family of Scottish wildcats. The family consists of dad Raymond (in the second image), mum Canna and their four kittens born last year. It was a real treat to see and photograph these beautiful cats, as I do have something of a soft spot for them – which is saying something, as there isn’t a species of wild feline that I don’t love! Despite looking like domestic cats and being closely related to them, these guys are different in several ways; their tails are thicker than a domestic cat’s and their stripe markings are bolder, but undoubtedly the most notable difference between domestic cats and Scottish wildcats is the latter’s temperament; as beautiful as they are, they are every bit as wild as their name suggests and can be extremely aggressive. Historically, these cats lived throughout the UK, but over the centuries have been persecuted so heavily that the only remaining wild populations can be found in the Scottish highlands. They are often referred to as the ‘Highland tiger’. A major threat to those that remain today is interbreeding with feral cats. Today, there are only a few hundred Scottish wildcats left in the wild and they are a critically endangered species. There is some good news though; several parks throughout the UK, including Shepreth, are part of a nationwide conservation effort to increase the numbers of Scottish wildcats and restore wild populations. This is a prime example of the process of evolution and species variation. Both subjects are mammals, both are antelopes, both are even lechwe, and both are the male versions of their respective species. On the left is the male Nile Lechwe. They are an endangered species found in the South Sudan and even in Ethiopia. The red antelope on the right is a Red Lechwe and is found in a wider range of African countries and locales, such as Botswana, Zambia, and other places like the Okavango Delta and Kafue Flats. They are a near threatened species, though they aren’t doing as poorly as the Nile Lechwe. Both species prefer swampy or flooded grasslands, and the males grow to stand out to the females. This was a beautiful moment where the two approached each other and crossed horns for a brief period before separating and wandering off on their own. While both occupy similar niches and environments, we can see how each species differs in their attempts to stand out to potential mates to pass one their genes. The Red Lechwe has beautiful black patterning on their forelegs and part of their chests, whereas the Nile Lechwe takes it to the extreme with their blackened shaggy coat and bright white patch on the backs of their muscular necks. Endless sky and endless memories. . For the past three years, I have traveled on a Project Dragonfly Earth Expedition each summer. The two-week trips require not only schoolwork, but prepwork as traveling to conduct conservation research in remote areas is not part of my everyday activities. Prep for the trips would start far in advance and would take up most of my brain capacity for the months leading up to the trip. Now that I’ve graduated, I don’t have a trip to prepare for and it feels so odd that I hardly know what to do with myself. These trips were such a massive part of my life that I keep feeling like I’m forgetting something that I should be doing. . The Colour of War Many of you will already have met these warriors in one of my recent posts. These are the very same species, Calotes bachae featured then, but here their war-paint is on and they are hungry for victory. ⚔️ Like many lizards, they become highly aggressive toward other males during the mating season, what I have witnessed with this species is that they covet the tallest positions from which to reign above the forest floor. 🌳 He who has the high ground wins, and at any cost. In this frenzied state they become ferocious, tearing at each other, gripping, biting, and heaving in an attempt to dislodge the other from their tree, and send them plummeting down to the crispy undergrowth with their tail between their legs or worse, some missing appendages and some battle scarring. 🏆 Pictured here, a younger male has challenged an elders position. Parliament have recently been debating bringing an end to the use of peat products by 2030 💡✨ But did you know? Targets to phase out peat use were first introduced in 2011? That’s 13 years of stalling… 13 years of precious peat being put into products you and I are likely to have bought in the last 13 years, unknowingly. This can include things such as houseplants, mushrooms, and plug plants, all of which I’m quite fond of 🍄 As you’d expect, debate did ensue in parliament - 'why should we phase it out if other countries aren’t attempting to?' 'It brings in money and makes crops grow better, isn’t it better to help grow food than make less?' 'We have lots of it, so what’s the big deal?' Carbon capture in peat is a delicate balance, and I won’t delve deeply into it here, but it’s argued that digging up peat is balanced by young trees absorbing lost carbon from their soils, but with less trees - where does the excess carbon from the peatlands go? It’s estimated (with figures varying) that the U.K holds 3.2 billion tonnes of carbon in it’s peatlands, with lots of those over Scotland, but an interesting amount lie over the east of England in dense quantities. You guessed it - straight up - helping to change our climate and planet. Around 80% of our peatland is damaged in the U.K, but peatland restorations across the country are in progress - so there is hope that we can re-establish these critically important carbon sinks in our wild isles.
