Here’s a before and after of the new kitchen garden. Greg built the pergola out of necessity because we needed cover for this large window. This raised bed, with its filtered sun and excellent drainage, created an opportunity for planting some really unique perennials and shrubs that I could never have dreamed of given our native clay soil. (Delphiniums, azaleas, macrophylla hydrangeas, peonies and more!) Of the 12 new garden beds that I’ve been working on this past year, I’d have to say that this one is my favorite! 💜💚🩷 #gardeninspiration #gardensofinstagram #backyardgarden #perennialgarden #courtyardgarden #donnassouthernblooms #zone8bgardening #dallasgardens #southerngardening

We asked one of our arborists, Jason, for three reasons to plant a tree on Arbor Day. 🌳 1. Beautify a Landscape 2. Their many benefits to the environment such as oxygen, erosion control, and habitat for animals. 3. Trees around a home can provide shade and wind breaks that can help reduce heating and cooling bills. Good watering habits make for good gardens. 🪴 Swipe through to see some of my easy tips for happy plants, and leave me any questions in the comments! 👇 Further explanation of each slide: 1. When you water your gardens or your turf frequently and shallowly, it creates shallow root systems that stay near the soil surface (where it quickly gets hot and dry). Water your plants deeply (aka keep the hose in one spot until soil is deeply saturated) and try and wait as long as possible between waterings. This encourages roots to grow down deep. 2. Roots are the primary source of water uptake for plants, so when you water, you need to water the soil around the plant, not all over the plant itself. Overhead watering of plants (like sprinklers) contributes to disease. Avoid getting water on leaves of the plant when watering if possible. 3. It is VERY important to water your gardens in the morning and not in the evening. If you wait until evening to water, your plant will suffer through the entire, hot day and be unduely stressed by the time you water it. Watering too late in the day also contributes to disease because without sunlight or warm daytime temperatures, water droplets are much slower to evaporate creating excessively humid environments where diseases thrive. Happy gardening! CWL (Kind request: To prevent confusion, please allow me to answer questions that are directed toward me first. Helpful suggestions are always welcome, but answering for me is not. Thank you for keeping this a great place to hangout!) #plants #gardening #landscaping #gardenlife#texasgardening #northtexasgardening #dallasgardens #thedallasgardenschool #dallasgardenschool #zone8a #growyourown #urbanfarming #urbangardening #urbangarden #garden #texasmastergardener #mastergardener #dallasgardening #gardeningtips

Plantain! It's everywhere this spring! While not related to 🍌, this wide leaf plantain I found in an empty lot is an amazing "weed" that can nourish and support our bodies. My favorite way to use it is by chewing it up and spitting it out on fresh fire ant bites. 🫢 Wild, I know, but It's a quick way to help our bodies recover from the bite and sometimes even make the itch disappear. 🔥 As with any foraging endeavor, always make sure you are 100% sure you have the correct identification before using a wild plant. Also, because it's really relevant to us in the urban context, harvest a good distance away from busy roads to avoid contamination from traffic. 👍🏽 #herbalism #dallasgardening #foragingdallas #backyardherbalism #fireants #dallasgardens #foragingtexas #dentoncommunitymarket #gardeningtips #growyourownfood #herbalremedy

When it comes to my absolutely favorite white rose, having 8 of her as a hedge (well 2 hedges along the walkway) is simply not enough! 😜 I had to move some other roses out to another location to make room for more. Finally got to plant 6 more this weekend! Can’t wait for them to catch up in a couple of years!! This area already smells insanely fragrant and I receive comments all the time when people come by! And what rose could this be? It’s the one and only BOLERO. I. Just. Can’t. Have. Enough! STORY TIME! So boom! This was my very first time performing and vending with no help. 🙅🏽‍♀️ @calebbrownvf has been there to help me at every single event, but he just had oral surgery and couldn’t make it. I drove to the event by myself in the rain. 😳 (I fear driving in the rain bc of a bad wreck I had in 2016) I carried all of my stuff in the building with no umbrella. ☂️ I set up my table by myself. I took my own pics, and filmed my own performance. (Not a good idea) 🙃 I even handled all the sales & networking on my own. Listen! This one man show stuff is not easy! Lol I learned a lot about what it’s like to be a single business owner. Not only did I realize ALL the stuff Caleb has to deal with in the background while I perform and sign books, but it gave me a newfound respect for the physical effort it takes to be a vendor at these events. It’s rewarding, but very hard work. 💪🏾 The hardest part was loading the car back up 👏🏾IN👏🏾THE👏🏾RAIN. ⛈️ (Did I mention it rained the entire day???)😳😩 Anyway, I made it home wet from head to toe with a hurt back, sore feet, full bank account, and a newfound respect for myself as a small business owner.🙌🏾 I say all of that to say, support your local vendors. Those tables you see set up at these events are not there to just look pretty. They PAID to get in the room with you to get the opportunity to sell their products to you. They are also a big part of your local community. Stop to say hi, take pictures, get their card, connect with them, and most importantly, don’t just take their free candy, BUY SOMETHING! Your support matters.✊🏾

"Dear Lower Back, so sorry for what I am putting you through right now, but it's crunch-time and those gomphrena, cosmos, and salvia won't plant themselves. Love, Me". Who's feeling the pain right now? (We all raise our hands...) Keep up the hard work, y'all. I know this is the hardest part - installing everything at once. But it's going to be SO worth it in a few weeks. Get your cucumber, squash, melon, and okra seeds in the ground asap so that you can get a good harvest before the heat sets in around late June. Your tomato plants should be starting to flower and fruit. Keep them healthy by pruning off all lower leaves and branches that are touching the soil. This helps to ward off disease by increasing airflow and reducing leaf-to-soil contact. If you're planting zinnias and single-stalk sunflowers direct, make a "succession planting" plan. Succession planting is the practice of repeating crop plantings at specific intervals in order to ensure a continous harvest and prolong the harvest window. Other flowers that can be planted in succession are basil, centaurea, cosmos, bupleurum, and gomphrena. Many vegetables are also well-suited for this practice including lettuce, spinach, radishes, sweet corn, cucumbers, melons and squash. Have any burning late April gardening questions? Leave them below! CWL (A kind request: When someone asks me a question in the comments, please do not answer on my behalf. This prevents confusion and the spread of misinformation. Please allow me to answer all questions first unless it is a question posed to everyone in the community - like where to find a certain thing locally, etc. I appreciate it so much! Summer is a comin! 🌼🐝🌼🔥 I know for some of you, weather is still chily and it’s too cold to plant! But for us here in Texas and other similar southern climates, peak spring is waning, and we are already headed into summer! We had a bit of an extended cool spell this spring so it’s done the roses right - they’ve been gorgeous. BUT they are already ready to have quite a bit of deadheading done for spent blooms. The irises, which came on a little late this year, are still blooming but will wrap soon. It’s getting hot and it’s time to start planting more heat-tolerant bloomers and veggies - although it’s already a couple weeks past time to plant tomatoes here 🍅 (too late folks! UNLESS you purchase larger plants in larger pots that have been bumped up and grown along with the season - 4” pots at this point are almost pointless - you might get away with some cherry tomatoes). BUT, you can go ahead with peppers 🌶️ now as it’s warm enough, along with planting and seeding other warm season crops. This little bee 🐝 is going to town on this ‘Lady of Shalott’ rose blooming in my garden. Once the flower matures and petals begin to drop, it’s easier for pollinators to get in there to harvest pollen and nectar. This is an English hybrid rose, which are not the fondest of our extreme Texas climate and weather - many can be persnickety - but I find this cultivar to be pretty resilient here. And, it’s one of the very few roses I have left, as I lost most of my collection to rose rosette disease. . . . #roses #pollinators #roseflowers #bees #englishhybridrose #davidaustinroses #gardening #garden #gardendesign #gardenconsulting #Texas #texasgardening #texasgardens #dallas #Dallasgardens #southerngardening #hotclimategarden #springflowers #nature #naturephotography #naturelovers #pollinatorgarden #botanical #botanicalwomen #beepic
