FOR SALE: World War II. RARE! WWII 1944 D-Day Omaha Beach Fired LARGE Machine Gun Bullet Recovered Vierville sur-Mer to Port-en-Bessin. The Normandy landings were the landing operations and associated airborne operations on Tuesday, 6 June 1944 of the Allied invasion of Normandy in Operation Overlord during World War II. Codenamed Operation Neptune and often referred to as D-Day, it was the largest seaborne invasion in history. The operation began the liberation of France (and later western Europe) and laid the foundations of the Allied victory on the Western Front. This incredibly rare and fired large caliber machine gun bullet was recovered on the D-Day Omaha Beach landing sectors from Vierville sur-Mer to Port-en-Bessin which includes the landing zones of CHARLIE, DOG GREEN, DOG WHITE, DOG RED, EASY GREEN, EASY RED, FOX GREEN, & FOX RED. This was uncovered during a professional excavation of Omaha Beach in Normandy during the 50th Invasion Anniversary in 1994. On the morning of June 6, 1944, two U.S. infantry divisions, the 1st and the 29th, landed at Omaha Beach, the second to the west of the five landing beaches of D-Day. Opposing the landings was the German 352nd Infantry Division. Of its 12,020 men, 6,800 were experienced combat troops, detailed to defend a 53-kilometer (33 mi) front. The German strategy was based on defeating any seaborne assault at the water line, and the defenses were mainly deployed in strong points along the coast. Casualties on Omaha Beach were the worst of any of the invasion beaches on D-Day, with 2,400 casualties suffered by U.S. forces. And that includes wounded and killed as well as missing. There is no concrete number for the German forces that were killed at Omaha Beach. Those records simply did not exist, and entire German units were wiped out virtually to a man. Today, 1st April, in 1945, RB396 was shot down and force landed near Denekamp. Her pilot on this occasion was Chris House. Her usual pilot, Frank Johnson, had been shot down a few days prior in another aircraft and was a PoW. RB396 was hit by flak on 18 other occasions in her short, four month, career. This just highlights the dangers of the work of the Typhoon, even this late on in the war. RB396 now forms the basis of this project. She is the identity. If she hadn’t been shot down in that location, on that day, who knows whether the section that survived would have done, and whether this project would have been formed around it. Who knows. The messages of all the speakers centered on honoring the sacrifices of the past and the importance of maintaining strong bonds of friendship between the U.S. and #France.
