Aspire. The word came to mind when I saw this photo from a couple of years ago while visiting a friend in Florida. I was happy but also in a deep healing, emotionally after years of challenging personal events,(more about this in my memoir, “Greed & Grace”) as well as physically, having had major surgery a few months before. To be at the ocean’s edge was a gift I didn’t take lightly. I aspired to having more days like this as well as closure to personal and professional events that were, at the time, limiting me. While the desire was to enjoy my trip (I did) there was a gnawing inside my soul over what I was trying to control in order to achieve the outcomes I wanted. It would be a year and a half from this moment to when I finally had closure on some of those challenges. The goal then was to find joy even during the most excruciating times and to try to carve out moments of happiness despite the emotional and physical pain. This photo reminds me that it was possible then as it is today. I aspire to find happiness each day, and that a desire of mine is to help others do so too. I find joy in helping others and I have something to admit: I love seeing people’s dreams come true. I really do. We all have dreams (I do!) and when I see people achieve their goals and make something they’ve wanted a reality I get inspired. What inspires you? One of my goals for 2024 is to find more joy in each day and not wait for an achievement to happen to be truly happy. I guess there is no irony in the fact that I listen every day to my “tv mom” Joyce Meyer’s “Enjoying Everyday Life” for inspiration. People who have lived through difficult events have wisdom to share and experiences which can help others navigate pitfalls in life. What have you been through that is worth sharing to help someone else? I believe we can use our pain for purpose. I wrote my book with that goal in mind. Our pain should not be wasted but honored and cultivated as a seed for change. Life is not easy but we can aspire to find joy in it while we are on our way to achieving our goals. Today I aspire to keep elevating joy no matter what challenges are before me. My wish is the same for you.💝

#tbt This photo was taken on the lanai of our family condo in Honolulu sometime in the mid 70’s with my maternal grandmother, Margaret, behind me and my parents and only sibling (not shown) by my side. I was so proud of that turquoise mumu and laugh now seeing this photo as I can remember how excited I was to finally own one. I miss having a maternal person in my life. I’m especially missing my mother lately as I’m dealing with some temporary health issues and chronic back pain that seem to intensify the yearning for that love. It’s amazing how we ache for our mothers when we find ourselves in pain. The primal feeling of wanting one’s mother, no matter how complicated the past, is upon me and felt so strongly today. I still feel my departed grandma’s love surrounding me every day. I’m so thankful for her example. She was a fun-loving, elegant woman from the south who always brought a lot of calm to me with faith, kindness and appreciation of little things. I describe our special bond in my memoir, “Greed & Grace.” She was a gem and I’m so proud to be her eldest granddaughter. Hug your family today. Unconditional love is priceless. I’m not writing this out of self- pity but more as a reminder to value who is in your life today. Who is standing beside you and who has your back? No matter what I know I am never alone as I have the awareness of God being with me and that is comforting. That has always made such a difference in my thinking, but I am human and I do miss the hug, care and the presence of my mother today. Heal hurts, forgive, make peace and be good to one another. When I was five my paternal grandmother, Joy Woodard, commissioned a well-known artist of the time to create a pastel portrait of the younger members of our family. At that time my younger sibling and uncle (who is only three years older than me) were asked to sit in her sunroom for the piece which hung for years in the private office adjacent to her bedroom in her home in Cottage Grove, Oregon. It was the first thing one would see above her desk upon entry and it always made me feel we must be special to be in her room! My grandmother was a very talented oil and watercolor artist in her own right. A graduate with high honors from USC with a degree in fine art, she spent years as a proud member of the water color society in Oregon and Hawaii. As a child she gave me an enormous appreciation for each of the mediums. For those of you who have read my memoir, “Greed & Grace” you know that she included me in some of her painting classes and brought out a love of art through her own talents. Her inclusiveness into this part of her life has filled my heart over and over since she passed in 2019. For this portrait I remember being asked to sit very still while the artist, Keith Ward sketched the outline of us and began creating the portrait that finally made its way to me in the last year. I never really liked the rendition of me but I always liked the way the artist captured my pink dress with white ric rac (a very 70’s application to clothes that I wore often). I have mixed emotions about the portrait now since my nuclear family is painfully fractured, yet it reminds me of my childhood which I continue to remember fondly. Perhaps the greatest feeling I have seeing this portrait again today is the great love my grandmother had for me and for us all. She took time, she cared, she made things beautiful through her artistic eye. She captured her life on canvas through the colors that came to her through flowers, sunsets, animals, rivers, waves, the gentle sway of a tree or the first blanket of snow on a mountain or rooftop.
