𝙏𝙤𝙥𝙥𝙚𝙧’𝙨 𝙈𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙩𝙖𝙞𝙣 𝘽𝙧𝙞𝙘𝙤𝙡𝙖𝙜𝙚 𝙍𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙚 2014 🗺️ New England, New South Wales 🇦🇺 Heading back to the cool climate New England wine region this evening for an appropriate shoulder season red blend. This wine comes from Topper’s Mountain, named after brothers Edward and William Topper, employees of George Jr. and Alwyn Wyndham (sons of George Wyndham, founder of Wyndham Estate). This was in the 1870s, when George Jr. and Alwyn were the owners of New Valley Station, which included the land upon which Topper’s Mountain currently resides. 🗺️ The vineyard itself was established between 1998 and 2002 by the current owners Mark and Stephanie Kirby. It’s a 10ha, cool climate vineyard at an altitude of 900m, predominantly planted to varieties including Tempranillo, Nebbiolo, Gewürztraminer, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Shiraz. 🍇 Pinot Noir and alternate varieties are planted in smaller numbers, with the likes of Tannat, Petit Manseng, Pinotage, Viognier, Touriga Nacionale, Tinta Cao and Barbera. Soils are mineral and iron rich red basalt, deep and free draining. 🌱 The Bricolage Rouge is a blend of 60% Tempranillo, 30% Nebbiolo, 5% Tannat and 5% Shiraz Viognier, all parts having underwent spontaneous fermentation in open fermenters, followed by 22 months maturation in oak. After blending, it saw a further 24 months bottle ageing prior to release. 📝 Aromas of perfumed, ripe red cherries 🍒, crushed raspberries, liquorice, savoury spices and tomato leaf 🍃 lead into a velvety smooth, rounded palate supported by fine, persistent tannin. Cassis, raspberries, an edge of dried strawberries 🍓 and raisined fruit, with a long peppery, red berried finish. Layered and displaying great balance, it has a medium body and is in a superb drinking window. It needed perhaps a few hours to shine but really hit its straps day 2 and 3. A wonderful drop. 🍷
