As the vermilion sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm glow over the Red Fort, I stood in awe, revisiting the majestic monument after six long years. The Mughal grandeur unfolded before me, adorned with intricate details that whispered tales of a bygone era. The Red Fort, a testament to Mughal architectural brilliance, mesmerised with its colossal sandstone walls. The Diwan-i-Aam, or Hall of Public Audience, echoed with the whispers of history, its red sandstone pillars standing tall, reminiscent of the imperial court's vibrant gatherings. Almost twirled into the Diwan-i-Khas, the Hall of Private Audience, I was stunned seeing the intricate marble inlay work. The aura of regality lingered, as if the whispers of emperors, Tawaifs and nobles could still be heard amidst the ornate patterns that adorned the walls. The newly constructed Yaad-e-Jallian Museum at Kranti Mandir served as a poignant reminder of sacrifice and struggle of our great freedom fighters, from Bose to Birsa Munda. Its exhibits eloquently portrayed the spirit of the Indian freedom struggle, offering a profound connection to the nation's tumultuous past in the form of pictorial representation and artefacts. However, the highlight of my visit unfolded during the sunset from the Diwan-i-Aam. As the sky painted hues of orange and purple (the photo on gram doesn't do enough justice), the fort transformed into a silhouette of magnificence. The sun's descent was a spectacle, casting a warm welcome over the historical grounds, leaving an indelible imprint on my memory. At that moment, surrounded by the architectural splendor of the Red Fort, I felt a profound connection to history. Reflection of Naubat Khana on Glass Chamber at Diwan-i-Aam housing the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan’s Throne: In the centre of the eastern wall of Diwan-i-Aam, stands a marble canopy covered by a 'Bengal roof, under which was placed the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan’s throne. A marble dais below the throne, inlaid with semi precious stones, was used by the Wazir (Prime Minister) for receiving petitions. Behind the canopy, the wall is decorated with beautiful panels inlaid with multi-coloured stones (pietra dura work), representing flowers and birds, said to have been executed by Austin de Bordeaux, a Florentine jeweller. The Naubat or Naggar Khana (Drum House) stands at the entrance to the palatial complex. In its days of glory, musicians from the Naubat Khana announced the arrival of the Emperor or other prominent dignitaries at the court of the public audience. Music was also played five times a day at chosen hours. Most of the royal palaces of India have essentially the Naubat Khana at the entrance. Faced with red sandstone, it is a large three storied building, rectangular on plan. Richly carved floral designs on its red stone walls appear to have been originally painted with gold, while the interior was painted in other colours. Several. layers of these paintings can be traced even now in the entrance chamber. DIWAN-I-AAM (Fatehpur Sikri Complex) As one enters Sikri from the Agra Gate, one of the nine gateways on the way to the palace complex, Diwani-I-Aam, or the hall of public audience appears first. Diwan-i-Aam or Hall of Public Audience, is a building typology found in many cities where the ruler meets the general public. Day had long settled over the Mughal apartments & the bright sun covered the white marble structures of the Red Fort with the colour of ginger. Finding my way stealthily through the maze of corridors of the private sanctum, I sneeked into the Royal Mughal court. The waft of fragrances uplifts the senses. Itrs have so intoxicating aroma that Mughals have them flowing into harem cascades, tanks & fountains. Pacing over the best intricate Persian carpets the imperial atelier could manage, in mute prompt I stopped. This is the perfect spot from where I could witness the court proceedings of Akbar Sani, the Mughal emperor. Surprise & amusement lit in quick succession as I gazed over the Emperor sitting on his domed throne in a colonnaded hall with his courtiers standing to each side. The ruler is bejewelled with pearls and precious stones, adorning his attire and body. Huge redstones gleams through the headgear with red plumes surmounting them on the top. Looking around from my position I saw a 'firangi' dressed in bright red. So among the other present at the royal Durbar is also the British Governor-General of India- Marquis of Hastings who has just been denied to sit in the presence of Emperor of India. Sweat dotted his forehead & contempt was quick to show up on his fair face as he witnessed his 'request to sit' trodden under the foot. A Nawab sitting far away on the battlements of his palace in Lucknow will reap the benefits of this humiliation of the Governor-General. Agra Fort - the part in white marble. The Agra Fort was rebuilt in red sandstone and white marble when Akbar moved in to base his capital here. According to historian Abul Fazl, the previous fort where the previous was made of bricks. The previous known occupants were the Chauhan Rajputs, and also the Lodis when Sikander Lodi shifted his capital to here from Delhi. Before Akbar came in, it was under Hemu. Post the Mughal occupancy and expansion, the Jats of Bharatpur occupied it for 13 years, followed by the Marathas and subsequently the British. While the part in red sandstone speaks of the might and robust grandeur, the interior quarters of the fort are next to poetry in white marble.
